Raleigh, North Carolina

6 years ago, while with my former company, I did the controls for Bainbridge Twp waste water departments new Membrane treatment system. The engineer in charge of the new process was from Austin, TX. He had done his thesis on Membrane Systems, and, although young, had fast-tracked his career within his company as he was their expert in the fairly new technology to the US (Japan has used this for quite sometime).
So anyways... I spent the better part of the year working with this guy before taking a new job with my current company. We had gone out to lunch on my last day and said the typical bullshit of "pleasure working with you; we'll keep in touch professionally; all that jazz. Well today I received a call from him... out of the blue.. 6 years later. He's now in Raleigh, NC and is the director of their SE plants. He called to ask if I'd be interested at all in being his EE to do the controls for the SE.
My sister and brother-in-law live in Raleigh.. It's a decent enough city but I cannot stand southerners. When I have to go south to work, it's dreadful. The attitude of the south is too much for me.

That being said... it'd be a huge pay increase. Better weather obviously... but you have to put up with southerners.

Would pay be worth it to you do live in a place you know you won't like?
The Research Triangle isn't quite as bad due to the northern influence... but it's still the south.

It's a 37.5% pay increase btw.. benefits are comparative.

Another down side is I can pretty much tell you what I'll be doing every day, unlike now where I get a variety of projects. The monotony may kill me.

Make that paper boiii. At least for now. Southern girls are hot. Go make big bucks for a few years and settle down with a mediocre job, that's my plan, and it's why I'm in LA and will probably be in Alaska next.

I'd go. Raleigh is a great place, I'd live there for sure if I have an offer like that--and I feel you on the Southerner thing, but Raleigh isn't THAT bad.

The biggest question is what are the golf courses like.

Aberdeen is an hour away. Some of the best golf in this country.

    take the job
  • Speedofsand
I'd do it. Raliegh is not deep south. Close to Ohio, close to Myrtle Beach golf. Do you like college hoops ? Make the money. Don't fear changes in life.

I'd probably take the job. Although I like southerners and monies and hate Ohio winters. I live about an hour away from Raleigh and it isn't a terrible area, but I haven't seen enough of it to have a good opinion. Like someone else said, Raleigh isn't even like the real South. In fact some people say Cary, next door to Raleigh, stands for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.

I wouldn't, to be honest - the combination of location and monotony wouldn't be worth it. There ARE worse places than Raleigh, but if you're not comfortable with general way of life down there, you'll be miserable.

And I don't the the NC State T-Shirt Girls are there any more. :)

Will you be accepting applications for a manager to look after all your properties up here?
  • ZWICK 4 PREZ
I'm going to meet with him Friday afternoon.
It isn't bad work.. just would be very "cookie cutter" work installing the same systems.
    There's worse things I suppose.

I only have my house now. But you'd be welcome to buy it lol.

I'm in Asheboro a lot for work. I didn't know you were in Greensboro.

I laugh at Zwick complaining about people with a certain "attitude."

Just kidding man. This sounds like a pretty big decision. Just make what is best for you. Money doesn't control every decision or happiness in ever situation.

I'd do it, but I love the area. I lived in Garner and worked there, and Cary, and Raleigh. Wish I never would have moved back.

I guess I should have clarified... I don't mind southerners too too badly outside of work. But to work with, they're unbearable.

Haha, haven't heard that in awhile! I have family from both sides that live in Cary--it's a great town.

Was looking at moving to Raleigh myself, just can't find a job down there yet.
I would not hesitate to move down there if I were you.

Zwick, you work for Timken, if I'm corect. That company is so up-and-down like a bipolar it's ridiculous. If this other company has more stability, then who gives a shit. You'll have plenty of warmer weather, better-looking bitches, and better golf to make up for the monotonous, boring job. I'd kill to be in your shoes(don't let that fuel your ego).

Well that's the thing.. it's a private company, so it's hard to get a good idea of how they're doing.
  • SQ_Crazies
I disagree with the "better-looking bitches" comment.
  • GoChiefs
Yeah..I think I'd definitely have to go. I mean really..can southerners really be bad as half the idiots in Massillon? I doubt it. Lol

They can be 300% lazier and less likely to follow directions.

I would take the job, but at my current position, I could take a 37% pay increase.

What exactly are the problems with the N. Carolinians?

PS - Don't you work in electronics? If you don't want the job, I think I have a buddy that would! :)

That's kinda vague isn't it? That's like asking a software programmer if he works in computers.
