Site rules announcement (it's lengthy but required reading).

I think the hardest part has to be the equality of enforcement and infractions.

I'm sure if it's a natural side conversation then that will be fine. I think Justin is speaking more towards an intentional shifting of topics if a person is trying to push an agenda.

Correct. Take sleeper dropping in on threads and derailing them with his anti-religion agenda.

A lot of threads naturally evolve and go off topic. That's perfectly fine.

Nope, we're (moderators and myself) all on the same page. If my mom starts posting again and calls someone an asshole she'll be infracted.

So with these new rules, will posters be mocked for using the "report" feature? Last time we were encouraged to use that feature, but in return we were mocked for it.

    No.

Myself and the mods were as guilty as everyone else for letting the place get the way it is. I'll take full responsibility for our actions (or lack of in a lot of cases).

So if I disagree with someone I can say "that's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard" but can't say "you're fucking stupid"? Ie this isn't a swearing thing but a personal attack thing? I don't wanna be censored.

You obviously don't need my approval but...GOOD. Shit was getting old.

Well before you post you should probably be asking yourself "Am I saying this in order to mock the person I'm replying to?" If the answer is yes, it's probably not something you should say. I mean "that's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard", while technically not a personal attack, is hyperbole and adds nothing to any conversation. I'm not affiliated with this site, nor am I attempting to pretend like I know what the new rule enforcement parameters will be, but I'm just going off of what I feel is adult conversation and debate.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a debate/discussion on this site with anyone admitting, "Wow you made some really good points. I still disagree though, to each his own" or anything to that effect. Obviously we don't want to all act like we love each other and suck each other off (verbally, not literally because some may be into that), but honestly, discussions just devolve into one side mocking the other, even if both sides have good solid arguments. What contributes to that? Shit like "That's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard!"

This is my opinion, and I've said this since this site was founded (of course, last time this was brought up a few years ago and I mentioned this, I was mocked and I'm sure someone said something like "That's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard!")

    I like this post. A lot. I agree 100%.

We aren't going to ban swearing. There are swear filters that can be set for those that don't like bad words. But the "that's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard" is just a roundabout personal attack, as far as I'm concerned.

It was pretty much LJ who started the mocking of users for using the feature.

I called ppl out for abusing it. You get infractions and bans on other forums for abusing it in the same way. Its to be used to report things against the rules, nothing more. Not because you dont like what was said or dont like who posted it.
