Yeah because free is always good especially when people who are giving out this health care aren't even equal to nurses.

LOL...You are spot on. But my impression is the majority of Americans don't mind higher taxes as long as someone else pays (read: soak the rich). If Americans had another 10% of their checks confiscated for FICA, along with a 19% VAT, as in Europe I bet we'd see a lot more politicians in office with a mandate to spend money.

I enjoy roads, parks, libraries, defense, regulations that prevent people from fucking over our air and water for pennies, etc.

Doesn't mean the tax code is perfect or that all taxes are good but acting like a literal laissez-faire market would work in the long run is ignorance to an incredible degree. You won't find many reputable economists who think it's sustainable. Absolute free markets are based on the idea that consumers and those making decisions for companies and markets make rational decisions. That just isn't reality.

Basing things off a free market is still the best way I'm aware of but an absolute free market will result in greater overall suffering for people.

I agree, although it bears mentioning that it's not a shortcoming of the free market you allude to but a lack of complete/perfect information. I just brought it up because it made me think as society advances the ability of the free market to function efficiently and effectively increases.

More to the point, there are probably some things that we needed the govt to do in the past, be it for capital or organization or whatever, that has become obsolete (the Post Office being sort of the poster boy for that). And I don't know, but 20-30 years from now the drone fleet might make the Airforce largely obsolete (at least as we currently know it).

You know the USPS isn't actually broke right? They had to pay something like 80 years worth of medical insurance for their employees upfront. Like, pay for insurance for employees who aren't born yet. That will put a dent in any Balance Sheet.

And I don't think society has advanced to the point where greed, irrationality, or stupidity in decision making is irradicated. In fact I'd say we've really taken no steps in that direction and probably never will.

Based on competition with smart regulations is what we should strive for. What encompases smart regulations/not regulations is the debate to be had.

I'd agree with that, and old regulations aren't necessarily still needed, or in other cases adequate.

As for the USPS, it's unnecessary. With UPS, FedEx and a few small players the govt doesn't need to provide that service any longer. It doesn't matter if USPS is broke or not, you do realize they are losing billions every year?

I'm saying that's not necessarily accurate as they have to pay billions for insurance far in the future that no other firm has to.

Pre-funding is mostly below the line (EBITDA). It's complicated, much of it is a cash/balance sheet item and only part hits the actual income statement for the year. Their OPERATIONS are bleeding cash. It's flushing money down the toilet, literally. The correct statement is, in addition to their operations losing billions, they have a MASSIVE legacy issue. A couple of choice comments from their 2011 earnings report:

"“The year-end loss would have been approximately $10.6 billion had it not been for passage of legislation that postponed a congressionally mandated payment of $5.5 billion to pre-fund retiree health benefits,” noted the USPS press release."

"To return to profitability we must reduce our annual costs by $20 billion by the end of 2015. "

• Operating revenue of $65.7 billion compared to $67.1 billion the year before; • Operating expenses of $70.6 billion compared to $75.4 in 2010;

^^^That's a $4.9B operating loss in 2011 and $8.3B in 2010.

I enjoy those as well.

What I don't enjoy is cronyism and self-dealing and public entities acting as if they aren't subject to economic realities. It is hardly efficient when a strong percentage of our political class are circle jerking with the public entities that rely on them..At some point the money funding this ends. We've reached that point.
