Protected class doesn't mean you have a special right to be offended.gut;1137778 wrote:That's usually a distinction without a difference when it comes to harassment. Try ignoring someone wearing a "Gays are sinners" t-shirt to work and see how that one plays out.
You are, quite simply, wrong. It IS a protected class, whether you think it should be or not.
You really don't want to make that argument for a lot of reasons. The first being that "the church" isn't one entity and there are plenty of Christian churches that don't see gay people as an abomination so you don't have consistency there.gut;1138546 wrote:No, they really the opposite thing in a virtually identical way.
The Church does not condone homosexuality. It is a sin. Associating Christ with an acceptance of that is an affront on their beliefs. "Gays are sinners" is actually, as it relates to Christianity, more factually correct. You're showing a double-standard by saying it's ok for this kid to make an assault on their beliefs, but it would be wrong for them express their actual beliefs.
The second being that you think this shirt was an assault on anyone's beliefs which is fucking insane.
Another is that the Bible itself is not consistent on this matter. Because it has parts saying that gay people are not okay and then you know, Jesus loving everyone. Those two statements can not coexist. They aren't consistent.
And then that argument can be taken to it's maximum with different religions, some assholes in the Muslim religion take it to mean that anyone but Muslims should be killed. Would you be okay with someone wearing a "Christians must all be slain" shirt to school simply because it was consistent with their religious views?
That's the point I was trying to make. Yes religion is a protected class but that does not mean anything you say or do in the name of religion is protected nor does it mean people cannot debate or mock you for your beliefs. All the protected class means is that we cannot discriminate against you for you beliefs in the pursuit of a job, education, etc.
Beyond that, could you explain to me how a shit that says Jesus doesn't hate a group of people is offensive? -

1. It is not a monolithic Church view on homosexuality, there is a range of views on homosexuality and homosexuals. Some churches welcome homosexual couples and recognize homosexual marriage such as the United Church of Christ, Evangelical Lutheran Church, various Quaker sects and Episcopal Church.gut;1138546 wrote:No, they really the opposite thing in a virtually identical way.

2. Hell why pick out gays for condemnation, why not “
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23 so why just cast stones at gays when we are supposedly all sinners.
3. Despite what you have written before, lexicographers repeated define homophobes as those having fear and contempt for homosexuals, it is a positive statement about Christ to say he does not have fear and contempt for gays, they are sinners just like the rest of us.
The kid’s t shirt (Christ is not a homophobe) is a compliment to Christ, your suggested t shirt (Gays are sinners) an attack on an often persecuted minority, it singles them out for attack. -

I was paraphrasing Christians who say that. My actual views are that the Bible does not say that and that God in all likelihood does not exist. Agnostic atheist if you will.Skyhook79;1138633 wrote:Link to where Jesus/God says that.
It was simply easier for me to say "okay even if the Bible/Jesus/God did say that gay people are bad they said that everyone is okay in other parts" than to look up all the supposed places that the Bible says gays are bad and refute them. I was taking the shortcut.
