Consistent moderation is the key to a safe and secure forum experience. I will not name names, but its clear that some moderators are creating different rules for different people.

I agree the name calling is over the top, but I would like to note I rarely resort to personal attacks. People don't like me because I expose their greatest weakness using logic and reason(and occasionally, hyperbole). The only reaction possible to this is to ignore it or escalate the situation with name calling and personal attacks.

I also agree the "buddy buddy" nature of this forum is a turn off for most new users, but let me ask you Justin, are you really focused on new user acquisition? I don't think that's the goal of this forum, unless you are having issues funding the costs of the forum and need to generate more revenue.

Yes I would like new users. Yes it is one of the goals of the forum. No I am not having issues funding the forum. Yes I would like to generate more revenue.

The main goal is to improve the overall quality of the site. That leads to new users and more revenue.

You will find that literally everywhere. This place is no exception.

A great goal, but it is also relative. Each user will have different opinions on what you could do, remove, etc. to help change the site.

I trust my own judgement. I've managed to keep this place up for two years when no one expected it to last more than a few days/weeks.

I think there is a culture that has developed here for most of us who have been around for a while. We know the personalities or acts that certain other posters have. We know what to take serious and what not to. Somethings certain perople say, can and should be taken with a grain of salt. Some people are simply trolls or come on here looking to argue.

With that being said, I believe this site wold be difficult for a new user to understand, just like anyone being thrust into a different culture. There should be a "rookie camp" or D-league for new users to learn the lay of the land before coming onto some of these threads and getting totally overwhelmed.

Good post. It would be kinda funny and cool to have somebody do a write up on the OC and it's culture. Maybe also provide a words and terms section for OC lingo. All rookies could use it as a reference.

As its setup now, new users will be hard to acquire. You have ignored my advice in the past so there's no point in offering any more.

    Good post. I agree.

Look, I'm not trying to add 10 new members a day or anything. It would just be nice to have an infusion of new members every once in a while. It will help keep things from getting stale. I think the forum as it stands right now is fine but it's never a bad thing to want to see it improve.

    Really?

Believe it or not, I've moderated a much larger site than this one will ever be and there was no such place for inconsistent moderation. Moderators were vetted a ton by the users and if you couldn't hack it, you were ousted and a new moderator was put into place. Luckily for me, I was well respected amongst the community for enacted fair moderation regardless of my personal bias' towards any subject.

Here, there are no vetting of the moderators. The moderators here were put in place when this site was barley functional and lack the necessary skills to be an effective moderator. Now that this site is fully functional and has a significant user base, there needs to be a new mandate to put effective moderators into place. Moderators also have to be held to a higher standard and can ill afford to participate in any rules violation, no matter how harmless it may seem. New users don't understand the friendships that have been built here and assume that name calling and personal attacks are the norm and accepted.

Until these issues are addressed, this forum will stagnate at best and decline in the most likely scenario.

To the much larger site that you moderated.

Where I live we have a couple of large HS football coaching issues going on, and I see several new members on this site posting about that. They are new members, and maybe will choose to stay exclusively in the HS forums.

Admittedly, this site is basically dead now, but I moderated it about 8-9 years ago at the height of its popularity. I went by the user name "clone".

If we would want our HS forums to pick up, to include more local chatter from around the state, then an onslaught of new members is definitely what we would need.

Ahh, gotcha. I'll take your post as bull shit, then.

That's unfortunate, though. I wouldn't be opposed to having a vote for moderators assuming you could post proof of personal experience with it working well on a large site.
