Anybody snowboard/ski?

I found out how bad I really sucked within a couple hours. Damp conditions meant that I left red and blue/purple clothing stains (overconfidence meant wearing jeans a red wool pullover) all up and down the friggin' mountain that were visible from the chair lift. I hit a mogul with my chest so hard I bent metal buttons on my pullover. I fell on my ass so hard I had a black and blue mark on my right ass cheek in the shape of my wallet. I was too sore to even party with the fellas and left the next morning.

I hate skiing and will probably never go again.

    Well done, sir!

I fully expect to have my ass handed to me by whatever mountain I decide to tackle. The challenge is half the fun...but I definitely don't miss the bruises from when I first started. Ouch!

I've been snowboarding for the past 10 years, skiied for about 5 years before that. I love it. I was spoiled and learned to do both at Steamboat in Colorado. Every year when I was in high school my parents would pull my brother, sisters, and I out of school for a week and we'd drive to Colorado for 5 days of skiing at various resorts. It was always a great time. I appreciated Ohio for what it was. Usually when I went to MRM I was there teaching a friend/girlfriend how to ski or ride.

On another note, if you want a semi-big mountain feel without the long/pricey trip out West, the East Coast has some decent alternatives. Places like Okemo and Killington in Vermont, Whiteface at Lake Placid, NY amongst others offer a decent alternative. Don't get me wrong, they PALE in comparison to Aspen, Vail, Breckinridge, Steamboat, and all of the other major resorts out West; but they are still much better than anything Ohio can offer.

tried Skiing. We had a ski club in HS. Couldn't stay upright so I took my ski's off and walked down down the hill. Got a snowboard and never looked back....

Before heading out west, i would take a less-expensive trip up East, it is a good "primer" for heading out west. As the above poster said, both Killington and Whiteface are great alternatives. I learned to ski at Whiteface.

I'd like to check out the East Coast, too, but I'm definintely not turning down what amounts to a free trip. Virtually the only thing I'll have to pay for is my lift ticket.

And since I've volunteered to help my bro move out of the goodness of my heart, that's cake with no lodging or transportation costs:P

Aspen = Most overrated place I've ever been. Everything was expensive, the terrain was nothing special, the snow was nothing special, and most of the people sucked. Granted, it may have had something to do with the fact that I was there during the 2nd season that they ever allowed snowboarders on Aspen Mountain, or Ajax as they refer to it out there. I like the other mountains that were on the same lift ticket a lot more (Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk). I wouldn't recommend spending too much time at Ajax to anybody. Its just not worth it when there are a lot better places fairly close. They do have a shuttle that runs between all 4 mountains.

I ski, but only up in Northern Michigan, because I can afford to go up there with friends. I'll take a 4 hour drive over a 3 hour flight and a really expensive hotel room or condo any day.

What are you guys riding? I assume you're all guys, at least, but maybe I"ll be pleasantly suprised and there will be a chick in there somewhere.

I'm currently riding a Morrow board I got 2nd hand. It's not too bad, but it's a wide and I'm just not feeling it. I'm looking to buy a new one, but can't decide what kind I want.

Hmmm...Mad River Mountain is 2 minutes from my house. I go there all the time.

Time to do some SEJ stalking.....

    :D

Good luck. I'm like a ninja.

    SEJ-
How did you enjoy lovely Mad River Mountain, Logan Co. and Bellefontaine, OH? That place is the one thing we have...that and being the highest point in Ohio. I think they do a real nice job out there, and I've skied all over little resorts....glad it's in my backyard.
  • sej
Its nice because its close. Of course, it's the only place I've ever been, so my opinion may change once I branch out a little bit.

I think I'm heading up this evening for some Midnight Madness.

Once you have masterd MRM take a short 3 hr drive over to Seven Springs in PA. Good runs and great bars on weekends. Hidden Valley is close by and its pretty good too.

Agreed on Aspen. So many other places out there, no sense in wasting money when better skiing, and less expensive skiing, can be had at numerous other places.

Most of all, the vast majority of people in Aspen are absolute douchers.

I'll have to check it out. Unfortunately, not many of my friends ski/board so I'm pretty much stuck doing it alone. Maybe if I mention bars they'll be more amenable!

I broke down and bought a new board today, too. Now I just have to wait for it to get here :(

I currently ride a Burton Baron that I bought 4 years ago. I have Ride Delta bindings, and a pair of 32 boots that I'm absolutely in love with. I'm looking to upgrade my deck before too long. All the new technology has made my board obsolete.

As of now, my most likely purchase for a new deck is:
http://ridesnowboards.com/boards/machete in the 161W variety. Wearing a size 13 shoe makes it a little more difficult to find a board.

    Hey SEJ,

If you want to go some time let me know. I don't have my own gear or pass (but I'm sure I can more than handle Mad River "Mountain").

I have Ride Preston bindings right now, and I'm not really a fan. I don't know if it's because they're older or they just sit funny across my foot, but I just don't like them.

I'm rockin' the 32 boots as well. I know what you mean about finding a board. I wear a women's 10/11 so finding a women's board that actually fits my feet is tough. I don't have an issue with getting a mens board, though, so I suppose that makes it a little easier. You're pretty much just screwed.

I'd crash into you on purpose :P
