Anybody snowboard/ski?

sejAnybody else snowboard and or ski?
I'm planning to head to Mad River Mountain this evening to do some riding. I've been looking forward to it for the last 3 months, but I'm not looking forward to the low temperatures! Here's to hoping I don't break anything -
OneBuckeyeYes, Ski. They are open already? I get board in like 10 minutes at mad river... but small hills is all there is in Ohio .
-
TedShecklerAbout once or twice a week I ski at MRM.
-
j_crazyI lived in Wyoming for 2.5 years and I tried to ski so many f-ing times. I took lessons for 2 days once and I still can't stop/turn. Skiing is not for me. Have fun though.
-
sejThey opened today.
Last year I was there at least once a week. I just learned last January or so, but I definitely see how it can get boring pretty easily. After about a month and a half I could manage the double diamonds at MRM.
My brother may be moving to Colorado (near Aspen) early next year. I have graciously offered to ride along with him, solely so I can spend a day or two riding while I'm out there. -
OneBuckeye^If you just learned how to ski in Ohio last janurary, real mountains will blow your mind.

Glory Daysrecently just got into skiing last year after moving back to ohio from the south. taught myself how to do it, far from being good(havent tried any black diamonds yet), but still enjoy it. only places i have gone so far though are boston mills/brandywine and peek n' peak.
i was actually looking the other day and it seems i think this weekend will be the first weekend of the season for most places in the region. i am gonna wait till after the new year though to get something together though.OneBuckeye wrote: Yes, Ski. I only board, but yeah, I'm really excited and I hope it works out.OneBuckeye wrote: ^If you just learned how to ski in Ohio last janurary, real mountains will blow your mind. -

yeah what stinks around here is it seems all the runs are kind of short, atleast from what i see at other places.OneBuckeye wrote: ^If you just learned how to ski in Ohio last janurary, real mountains will blow your mind. -
krambmanI ski. I used to enjoy going to Mad River when I was younger, but two years ago my parents moved to Idaho, so after skiing Bryan Head in Utah and Pomerelle and Sun Valley in Idaho, Mad River just isn't much anymore. Their longest run is shorter than the bunny slopes out west! And the black diamond runs at Mad River are roughly equivalent to something between green and blue out west. I'll still head to Mad River a few times in the inter, but I do most of my skiing when I head to Idaho to visit my parents, especially because lift tickets run about the same out west as they do at Mad River.
If you like skiing and have never been to Sun Valley, you should make the trip sometime. The place is a fantastic mountain (two, actually: Baldy and Dollar) with a great resort and it's in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Definitely one of the top ski resorts in America. -
Laley23I have skied since I was 2. I have snowboarded since I was 9. I am currently 23.
The WORST idea for someone in your situation (and it may seem odd) is to go out west to ski. Youre still very new to it and going out west will be so awesome that if you cant manage a trip out there once a year you will lose interest in skiing in Ohio.
I learned how to telemark about 5 years ago. That is the hardest thing Ive ever done. Its a combination of cross country and downhill. We went out to Colorado and went backcountry skiing. Hiked up (cross country style) to the tree line and up to the top of the continental divide and telemarked down. Very fun.
I know go out west every couple years. If I go to the places around here I jest get bored after an hour. The closest thing to fun is northern michigan around these parts. -

Yeah...I believe the first time I went down a diamond at MRM I said this is probably a bunny slope at some of the ones out west.
I already found that, by the end of the season last year, I was starting to get bored with it. I have a list of things I want to work on (jumps, not spraining my wrist again, getting better than the 7 year olds I ride with) so hopefully that helps alleviate it a bit. I'm still really new, so I have a whole lot of stuff to learn. I may even try to ski one of these days.Laley23 wrote: I have skied since I was 2. I have snowboarded since I was 9. I am currently 23.

I'm still going to take advantage if I have the opportunity to hit some real hills. I'm trying to convince my bro to try to get hired at a resort so I can come out more frequently. -
Fly4FunYa, but I wouldn't consider anything in Ohio that great for obvious reasons
I was spoiled... learned to ski in Austria... then lived in the NE for 4 years. Although the skiing up there was damn cold, it was great!
Edit: I'm going insane I swear, I think Belly35 has got to me. I'm starting to type/talk like him. -

I'm great. -
TedShecklerI grew up 5 minutes from MRM, I've been skiing for about 25 years. I go out a couple times a week just to kill a couple hours. I also usually take a couple trip a year, one to WV and one to Lake Tahoe to ski.

those 7 year olds are the worst. its so tempting just to stick my pole out and trip them when they go by, stupid little show offs...sej wrote: I already found that, by the end of the season last year, I was starting to get bored with it. That's pretty much what we do, too. We all have passes, so we'll just head up for an hour or two to have a little fun. We're heading up tonight after work and I doubt we'll stay longer than a couple hours, especially since it's super cold. I thought I bought a pair of pants with good insulation, but apparently I did not. I'm going to freeze my ass off.TedSheckler wrote: I grew up 5 minutes from MRM, I've been skiing for about 25 years. The guy who taught me has twin 7 year olds. It's always good for your self esteem when they 1. ride by you laughing after you've tumbled head over heels down the bunny hill or 2. want to race you and beat you down the hill by a good 15 seconds.Glory Days wrote: those 7 year olds are the worst. its so tempting just to stick my pole out and trip them when they go by, stupid little show offs... -
krambmanThis is my family and I at Pomerelle in Albion, ID last winter.
Me in red, sister in the middle, bad in yellow.
Needless to say, it was very cold and snowy that day. -
Doodle3451Snowboarding is the way to go...I'll be getting a pass to MRM and going up quite a bit! I guess you can ski if you don't want a challenge. hehe

whats the challenge in falling down on your face or butt? i mean, thats all i see snow boarders doing.Doodle3451 wrote: Snowboarding is the way to go...I'll be getting a pass to MRM and going up quite a bit! I guess you can ski if you don't want a challenge. hehe -

I will say...some skiers have some amazing wipeouts! I think you get a better effect with your feet separated because then the opportunity exists to get your limbs all tangled. I give them bonus points when the skis, hat and gloves all go flying in separate directionsGlory Days wrote: [

ytownfootballI thought I was a decent skier (for Ohio). We had opportunity to spend the weekend in Killington VT, a bunch of guys. I found out how bad I really sucked within a couple hours. Damp conditions meant that I left red and blue/purple clothing stains (overconfidence meant wearing jeans a red wool pullover) all up and down the friggin' mountain that were visible from the chair lift. I hit a mogul with my chest so hard I bent metal buttons on my pullover. I fell on my ass so hard I had a black and blue mark on my right ass cheek in the shape of my wallet. I was too sore to even party with the fellas and left the next morning.
I hate skiing and will probably never go again. -
Glory Dayshaha the only time i have ever fallen on a skis was when i wasnt paying attention on the stupid bunny hill tow rope thingy and my first time getting off a lift, nothing on the actual hills haha. although i have hit a few ice patches where i thought i was done for but always seemed to recover.
