  Why isn't this a legitimate discussion topic? Is it because it isn't politically correct. Go research the topic. Pedophiles go after boys more often then girls. My question is why is that. I never said anything about all gay people being pedophiles. I don't think that at all. I am asking a reasonable question.

  First, I think the OP is looking at it from the wrong angle. Pedophiles are not 'gay' or 'straight'. They're 'pedophiles'. They like young pre-pubescent children. That's their target. I think the reason you see young boys targeted by older men because it's easy for the pedophile to not raise suspicion.
  
  Anecdotal question: which would raise more alarm, an old man letting a ten year old boy sleep in a room in his basement or letting a ten year old girl sleep in a room in his basement? The amount of interaction between the pedophile and his soon-to-be victim would increased if he used activities that a grown man participating in wouldn't seem 'weird' to the outside observer. Sports, etc. An old man spending a lot of time with a young girl (and not family-related) comes across as much more unlikely.
  
  In the end, they're fucked up. They're not gay, and they're not straight. The sex of their victim matters little to them. The fact they're pre-pubescent is what they're after.

  I've also read in some of the Penn State coverage that many psychiatrists don't believe a pedophile can be effectively "cured" or helped. This makes it very frightening.

  1.7 out of 1000 girls report being abused. .4 out of 1000 boys report being abused. It would seem to me that more than 4 times as many girls are abused as boys. So I think we can stop worrying about why all homosexuals are also pedophiles.

  If you read my question, you would know that was never my contention. I am not asking why "all homosexuals are also pedophile" as I don't believe that at to be the case at all.   If my thread title is misleading, I apologize. I didn't know how to properly phrase my question. Again, I don't allege that homosexuals are all pedophiles at all. And one poster here explained it well that maybe it's a matter of opportunity. It is a physchological question, not a political one.

  I skimmed your link but I only see where it says most offenders are male. Did I miss the part where it says most victims are male.

  I think most victims are molested by someone they know and trust. And I believe from the link I posted that most victims are female so I don't think parents do a better job protecting girls. I know several women that were molested when they were children and all of them were by a family member or family friend.

  I think most victims are molested by someone they know and trust. And I believe from the link I posted that most victims are female so I don't think parents do a better job protecting girls. I know several women that were molested when they were children and all of them were by a family member or family friend.

  The link said, "Offenders report that when they touch a child, most (60%) of the victims are boys." I think the earlier poster probably hit the nail on the head. The opportunity for a pedophile to be alone with a male child is a lot easier than with a female. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense.

  Here's a study of 17,337 sex abuse victims. 9,367 female and 7,970 are female. I do not believe that the majority of victims are male. (Although I would be willing to believe that most male victims do not want to come forward.)

  The term pedophile in this context refers to someone who attacks a pre-pubescent. Thinking of Sandusky, who is being termed a pedophile, was what got me thinking on this.

  You know what has always bugged me is the attitude towards pedophilia and child sex abuse from the general public. It really shows a lack of understanding of what pedophilia is and how it works.
  
  What I mean is....pedophilia and other sexual compulsions are just that....compulsions. To try to understand why somebody would rape a child or what was going through their head implies that there is a certain level of justification that goes into the act. Unlike other crimes, this is not the case. So basically these guys aren't thinking when they are doing it, they are just doing it.
  
  Then we get the people that say about repeat offenders "I don't know how he didn't learn his lesson when he went to jail the last time." Again, these are not crimes of logic or justification, therefore no amount of jailtime will deter them from committing these acts again in the future.
  
  So we're left with two choices for people like this: lifetime in prison, or attempt at rehabilitation. Now as has already been said....it is not something that can be fixed through therapy, but certain people can be taught to control their compulsions to a certain degree.
  
  I guess the moral of the story is, to simply be mad and spout hatred towards people like this shows a lack of understanding of the mental disorder. These men literally cannot help themselves. The more everybody knows about, the better we understand it, the more we can do to prevent it.
