Will Avatar be a bust?

  • Websurfinbird
Fox says Avatar is its most expensive movie to date.

I haven't been that impressed by the promos. Effects look cool, but nothing is jumping out and saying "go see this movie!"

Anyone planning to go see this movie?

I think it will be, comparitively to the price.

I heard it was pretty cool.. tho I think sci-fi in general is homo.

I'm a sci-fi fan but I think the movie will be a bust.
  • FatHobbit
I'm gonna see it. Maybe not opening night, but pretty close to it.

    Cameron = $$$$$$$$

    It will do well.
  • ptown_trojans_1
I'm guessing bust. It looks interesting, but not enough to cover the costs.
  • j_crazy
looks bad. I won't expect big numbers.

    Apparently according to Z4P I'm a homo, don't tell my wife! :)

I like sci-fi to a point, but don't go TOO far. I like Star Wars movies but get a good laugh at the people who "dress up" to go see them.

I plan on seeing Avatar, the special effects alone look great, who knows if the storyline will worth the money spent on making this movie or not.

I say bust compared to the money spent, but compared to other movies, not a bust.

Everyone said the same thing when Cameron made Titanic. It ended up being the most successful movie of all time. Not saying this is going to happen with Avatar but I wouldn't doubt James Cameron again.

It's not going to be Titanic good. But this movie looks like it would be bad ass in HD.
  • End of Line
Not a real big fan of Sci-Fi. The last sci-fi I saw was District 9 and I thought that was amazing. I'm looking forward to this movie, so I hope it does well.

Is this movie based on something or original? I don't have a clue what it's about.
  • v_falcons
I dislike sci-fi movies !!! But this movie I definitely plan on seeing. . I've seen a few trailers, and IMO looks really interesting...

I don't necessarily think you're gay for seeing it... just the movies are a lil too much for me.

I think it looks pretty cool. Thinking about going to see it in IMAX.
  • bigdaddy2003
Well after watching the trailer that V_falcons posted I think it will be an alright movie. I don't see it being a blockbuster though.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
A year ago I was so excited about this movie, after the trailers my expectations have simmered considerably. The movie will do well since people will be interested to see the special effects, but its been so long since Titanic that a lot of progress has already been made in the special effects realm, and the story looks very simple ("Dances with Smurfs" to give a nod to South Park).
  • Tim Tebow
It looks interesting, but, i will pry not see it.

I am looking forward to seeing "Brothers" though.

I don't dig these 'fantasy' movies. Hate Lord of the Rings, could never watch more than 5 minutes of any of them. I won't be watching this one.

:@ :@ :@ :@ I actually thought that too..until I was made to sit down and watch it..now the LOTR series is one of my favorites.

I think it will be a bust because the movie doesn't look that impressive to me and the premise seems stupid. At this point, far out effects like this don't have the same appeal that they did 5 years ago when movies like The Matrix came out. Now people want to see very good realistic effects like those in Batman or Transformers. The big equalizers with movies though is story. If a movie tells a great story, it will be successful. This doesn't always happen in theatres, sometimes it happens once it's out on DVD, but a great story will be successful. If this movie has a great story, then it will be successful. I still think that it will be a bust in theatres and may struggle to break even.

I can see it being a bust. Great special effects and crap, but from what I've gathered, the plot is some paper-thin sort of "folks find new planet chock-full of minerals and stuff to acquire, indigenous people aren't cool with this stuff, good guy hooks up with natives and grows to respect them and helps them fight off his people" sort of thing.

The kind of thing you write on a napkin at a corner diner and then give to a master of BSing to expand into a 120-minute presentation.
