That's true, but I think there are different expectations. I don't expect a late night Syfy movie to be good. The problem with POTC 2 and 3 was that the first one was an unexpected hit, and actually a good movie. The studio capitalized on the popularity, threw a lot of money into special effects and forgot to write a coherent script - result is a box office bonanza and a lot of disappointed viewers.
It is similar with Spiderman 3 (which I watched again on our crappy cable this past weekend), it is far from the worst movie ever made, but compared with SM 1 and 2 it is just godawful, and with the expectations of fans of the first two films one can understand why it was so hated, and why the studio needed to "reboot" the franchise. Spiderman 4 with Maguire, Dunst and Raimi would have bombed.
