I guess I still don't see where you got the idea that anyone at Worthington Kilbourne asked Westboro to protest at Hilliard Darby.

The administration asked a representative of Westboro to speak at a class at Worthington Kilbourne.....but to blame that invitation on the protest at Darby is a huuuuuuuuuuuuge stretch at best.

I thought they you were saying that this class has asked radicals to speak before and thus asked WBC to come speak?

As I'm typing this, I realize that they MIGHT have asked them to come speak at their school, and the WBC decided to go protest at HD. I was just confused.

I think the city of Hilliard and Hilliard City Schools should send the bill for any related expenses to Kilbourne's student council. Gee, thanks for sharing Kilbourne.

wk_fan. This is what I was referring to. I read it wrong by thinking that WK asked them to go speak at Darby. Simple mistake.

I mean, its hard to make anybody from Kilbourne bear responsiblity for this since they decided to go to Darby on their own, I guess, but who sponsors a class like that @ the high school level?

I was in the band. After our football game ended I walked to the band bus to realize paint was poured all over our buses. It was a warm night, we'd left windows open on the buses. Paint also went inside and ruined personal belongings of several band members. The Shelby HS Student Council had to pay to have our buses repainted. The student council, not the school district. That was fall of '73. I guess in your eyes, restitution shouldn't have had to be made - after all football games provide many great lessons.
Two totally different situations. The vandals intentionally and maliciously participated in an act that resulted in monetary loss to a group. WK did not intend for the entire Westboro Baptist loons to go protest at Hilliard Darby HS.

You also were wrong in quoting me as saying it. :)

The class in question, called Political Radicalism or Poly Rad is offered at both Worthington high schools and is a Senior level elective class that is designed to challenge and inform on many of the various difference that people have in this world without trying to convert or change anyones mind...but open it to differing points of view.

They have had representatives from many different religions, the KKK, Aryian Brotherhood and the like to allow for a genuine discourse for the students. No confrontations are allowed and no 'recruiting' from the guests are allowed. The class is heavily monitored by the administation of the school...even to the extent of using conference calls for any particularly controversial groups.

Both of my kids took the class while in high school and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I know some people will be offended that this class is even offered.

I would have loved to take this class in school. There is nothing that gets discussion going like topics that can be deemed offensive. It is a choice for the students to take it. To give your child the opportunity to sit in this class and see other peoples views points, regardless of how radical, is what education is all about. I bet this class teaches kids a lot more than most other classes offered at the school.

Agreed...and I think that is sad. I have no problem if they don't want to take the class...but to be offended and want to prevent others that have the desire to take a class like this is, just, well....sad and self-serving.

    Again....agreed.

I agree. That sounds like it would have been a lot more informative, educational and interesting than the generic crap my high school offered.

I too would have drooled over that class. I took a Soc. of Religion Class that shown light on mainstream Religions (Learned A LOT about Islam in that class) as well as "Cults." I did a presentation on The Way (If you're from Auglaize, Mercer, Shleby County) because I grew up not too far from the headquarters and did the cool thing of trespassing on grounds.

Learning about radicals in a constructive way is AWESOME. Whenever the History Channel has something about the KKK, Nazis,.... I make it a point to watch or DVR it.

DarbyPitcher - had this been offered in Hilliard, I would have STRONGLY urged my kids to take it. Over time, I found that not sheltering them from viewpoints different than mine generally produced the ability to recognize illogical thought when it was presented to them - from all points of the the religious and political compass.

Jesus Christ man, there's just some things you don't talk about in public!

You may be too young to remember this movie.

They are going to be in Logan tomorrow protesting at Spc Robert Hartwick's funeral. The Patriot Guard Rider's are going to be there to counter their protests though.

Actually, these Westboro assholes do the gay world a lot of good. Nobody blames us gays for this mess. We get a lot of sympathy from people who wouldn't ordinarily sympathize with us.

As many of you already know, I sing with Seattle Men's Chorus, the largest gay organization in the Pacific NW. Two years ago the WBC came to protest at the Seattle Gay Pride Parade. Just as the float with the chorus was about to pass the Westboro people, our conductor told us to sing "Jesus Loves Me." Oh, were the Westboro people pissed off! That's how you handle this scum.

To be honest, the message of that song is probably more lost on them than just about any gay person they'd verbally assault.
