Little DannyI stand by my pick of Bar Raefeli. Hence my earlier post. However, in the spirit of this thread I thought it would be timely to post these song lyrics:
Put on your yarmulke
Its time for Chanukah
So much funnaka
To celebrate Chanukah
Chanukah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents
We get eight crazy nights
When you feel like the only kid in town
Without a Christmas tree
Here's a new list of people who are Jewish
Just like you and me
Winona Ryder,
Drinks Manischewitz wine
Then spins a draydle with Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein
Guess who gives and receives
Loads of Chanukah toys
The girls from Veruca Salt and all three Beastie Boys
Lenny Kravitz is half Jewish,
Courtney Love is half too
Put them together
What a funky bad ass Jew
We got Harvey Keitel
And flash dancer Jennifer Beals
Yasmine Bleeth from Baywatch is Jewish
And yes her boobs are real
Put on your yarmulka
Its time for Chanukah
2 time Ocsar winning Dustin Hoffmanaka
celebrates Chanukah
O.J. Simpson
Still not a Jew
But guess who is,
The guy who does the voice for Scooby Doo
Bob Dylan was born a Jew
Then he wasn't
but now he's back,
Mary Tyler Moore's husband is Jewish
'Cause we're pretty good in the sack.
Guess who got bar-mitzvahed
On the PGA tour
No I'm not talking about Tiger Woods
I'm talkin' about Mr. Happy Gilmore.
So many Jews are in the show biz
Bruce Springsteen isn't Jewish
But my mother thinks he is.
Tell the world-amanaka
It's time to celebrate Chanukah
It's not pronounced Ch-nakah
The C is silent in Chanukah
So read your hooked on phonica
Get drunk in Tijuanaka
If you really really wannaka
Have a happy happy happy happy Chanukah! -

Technically that's being Hebrew. Judaism is a religion, not a race or ethnicity. If you practice Judaism, then you are a Jew. If you're ethnic heritage is of the Jewish faith then you are Hebrew. Although, today, the words seem to be interchangeable.Websurfinbird wrote:

Level of observance doesn't matter, but obviously those with some Jew pride are best.
Must have at least one parent who is Jewish. (i.e. old school hottie Paul Newman)
Country of origin not an issue, Jews come from all over the globe and encompass all races.
Pics of converts are welcomed as well! -

While I certainly don't condone the treatment of Jews during the Hitler crusade and think it was a senseless, horrifying/depressing thing....I thought of something similar.gorocks99 wrote: Is it bad that I thought of a Holocaust joke when I read the thread title?

Guess I'll see ya there! -
WebsurfinbirdOk to clear some things up. Judaism is considered a religion, an ethnicity and a culture. As I stated earlier you can be from anywhere in the world and be Jewish. Some circles are very strict about whom they consider Jewish. For example the very observant say you must have a Jewish mother to be Jewish (father's religion is not relevant), while others say either parent is OK and others even welcome anyone who remotely identifies with the faith. The issue is huge in Israel, as under the "right of return" law anyone who is Jewish can move to Israel (see law here: http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/MFAArchive/1950_1959/Law+of+Return+5710-1950.htm), however defining who is Jewish has been heated topic of debate. Pardon my fuzzy history, but there was a period of time (I believe 70s or 80s) when a number of Soviet Jews hoped to come to Israel, however under communism, a lot of Jewish identity was lost so there was some controversy over the "Jewishness" of the Soviets.
As per my rules, I did look up Pink and she has one Jewish parent. Israelis are tricky, although it is a "Jewish" state, there are many Muslims, Christians and other religious groups that live there.
Ok back to the important stuff

Are you saying this as someone who is Jewish or knows a lot of Jewish people? Just asking because I know several people who consider themselves Jewish that don't practice the religion at all. You are right though that it is not a race, but many people do consider it an ethnicity, myself included. This is why you have the terms Ashkenazic (for Jews who have roots in Eastern Europe) and Sephardic (for Jews hailing from Spain/Italy and the Mid-East).krambman wrote:

Anyway we are getting away from the point of the thread. -

Krambman...that's what I needed. Thx. It seems they are used in an interchangeable manner. If being a Jew means you are practicing Judaism then who your parents are do not seem to matter. If you are from Israel and are Muslim or Christian you are not a Jew. IN fact most of Israel is secular according to my FBI neighbor.
I think I am getting it. -
