Your Salary - Do you share or keep it private?

I work at a Big 4 accounting firm. I think everyone has a good idea about what everyone else makes. Especially if they are the same year as you.

I work in the public sector. Our Auditors I's start out at $46K out of college. It's below market, but that's what you get when you work for the government.

Lol, they hiring? If they are paying 85k out of school which is about 25k above market value (straight out of school is about 60k for a chem e depending on city/state), I can imagine what they are paying chem e's with experience.

That is actually about market, and they only work 9-5 and get a pension. Where do I sign up?

7:45-5:15 and get 1/2 every Friday off or every other Friday. Then there's state and federal holidays. 1 hour for lunch. "Mystery" days off -approvals from the head of our agency that can really come at a surprise. And more....

It works out good though. We're a revenue-producing agency, so the perks are a little better than other agencies. I wish I could complain, but I really can't; plus, I'm management so my deal is even a little sweeter. I'll keep what I've got for the time being. Although, I'm kinda jealous of the private sector pay in some cases, but not the long hours.

I think a lot of lawyers, like engineers, find out it's not as sexy and as exciting as on tv. The lucky ones figure it out while still in law school, the others get some war stories and a few bucks to pay off those loans. Had a friend in law school and I told him I had always thought I might go that route and knew I could be good, but realized 90% of it was research and writing briefs that I knew didn't appeal to me. He said I was smart to understand that because most don't.

Along similar lines, the "blue chip pedigree" is sort of Ivy League undergrad and then consulting or investment banking. But go to a good grad school and you skip the monkey business and start as an associate, just like the people who did it before grad school (the catch being most who did it beforehand do everything in their power to avoid going back).

I wish I had the idea to have my own business, because I think I have the passion and ability (but probably too risk averse, even with the idea). But reality is most entrepreneurs work just as hard (if not harder) than a lot of your lawyers and doctors. There are very few fortunate souls who most people would define as successful in the business world who don't have to work very, very hard.

There's a reason a company would pay way above market value. Often, the reason is not good.

You are correct there sir. I was jesting about the "are they hiring" I love where I am at location wise and job wise. Oh yeah, the pay doesn't suck either.
