Is there Extra-Terrestrial Life?
-
Mooney44CardsCool show on both earlier and right now called "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking" on the Discovery Channel.
Discussed in the earlier episode the possibility of extra terrestrial life.
This is usually something where you either believe it or you don't, but I believe there are several areas in between. So how do you feel about it? -
Fab1bI don't see how we can be the only planet in this world with life????
-
Mooney44CardsSaw a number which may blow a hole in the theories of those who say "not a chance". If only 1/1,000,000,000 (thats one/one billionth) of the known stars that have planets orbiting them in the universe contain some form of life, that means about 6.5 billion stars have planets that contain life.
When you figure in the law of averages, its almost inevitable to conclude that theres SOME life out there. -

Fixed that for ya, lolFab1b wrote: I don't see how we can be the only planet in this universe with life???? -
Fab1bGood you know what I meant

Fab1bBeen partying since Friday my man, returned from camping today having a few thats left over!!
-
sleeperOh absolutely. Maybe not in the form of the typical alien that we think of, but I'm sure somewhere out there is something that can move and breath on its own.

Steel Valley FootballI just read an article today where Hawking said we should hope we don't find it (or it finds us) because it would likely destroy our entire civilization, pillage earth for it's resources, then leave.
This is one of things that some people simply want proof or they will never believe in it. I'm convinced ET life has already been here thousands of times. -
LJCan I answer "yes, in the form of NCF"
-
ytownfootballCan't imagine we're the only statistical anomoly with a few organized cells in the universe.
-
I Wear PantsI think it's damn near impossible that there isn't life out there somewhere and probably multiple places. Though we'll never come in contact with them and they will probably never come in contact with any other life either.

This was actually discussed in the show, in fact thats where they got the quote from.Steel Valley Football wrote: I just read an article today where Hawking said we should hope we don't find it (or it finds us) because it would likely destroy our entire civilization, pillage earth for it's resources, then leave.

I actually read that same article which led me to watch the show. -

Because Hawking knows what an alien would do...Steel Valley Football wrote: I just read an article today where Hawking said we should hope we don't find it (or it finds us) because it would likely destroy our entire civilization, pillage earth for it's resources, then leave.

I saw the movie, the little dude was just taking some weeds back to his place.Steel Valley Football wrote:...pillage earth for it's resources, then leave.

gerb131I think there is other life out there somewhere. Pretty much gotta be something and they are probably good at soccer too.

Well, its a THEORY, like everything else in science.I Wear Pants wrote:

But his point was, look at what happened when Columbus came to America, it didn't turn out so well for the Native Americans. -
I Wear PantsYou're right, we probably would get some weird diseases.
-
tk421Absolutely. I doubt we ever find any evidence, though. Also, there might not be life right now in the insignificant period of time we have been on the Earth, but I'd pretty much guarantee that there have been intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe, if not right now, then in the past or will be in the future. The Universe is 14+ Billion years old, the odds of intelligent life evolving at the same time as us are slim.

Mooney44CardsHawking brought up another interesting point in the episode. Basically he postulated that perhaps advanced civilizations (like ours) all inevitably destroy themselves before they can reach the point of advanced space travel or communication. Seems likely when you think about it. Over a long enough timeline, anything is possible, and its possible that almost every single advanced civilization that ever existed in the universe was destroyed before interstellar travel was perfected.

Glory Daysthe question is, would they be hot and can we have freak alien/human sex?
-
tk421Hell, even if some civilization could break the "warp" barrier and travel faster than light or use wormholes, etc to the same effect, unless they are really booking it, it'd still take way to long to get anywhere. Even going 100X c, it would take a thousand years non stop to cross our galaxy.

DeyDurkie5I can't even imagine what happens in the future as far as nuclear wars/alien life. I'm going to be smoking a blunt on my porch and get nuked out of nowhere and be dead
-
tk421I just hope we don't have a resident cascade any time in the near future. If so, I need to scout out locations to stock up on crowbars.

Please God yes.Glory Days wrote: the question is, would they be hot and can we have freak alien/human sex? -
tk421I vote to test alien/human species compatibility.
