Are private college grades inflated?

  • Cat Food Flambe'
The New York Times seems to think so - and their methodology is solid.

Absolutely, and you can add private high schools to that list too.

I had a professor here at Clemson who was guest teaching here for a semester from Harvard. He told us that he gets pressured by the administration of Harvard to give all students As and a few Bs. He tells this to his students and gives them two grades when he gives them papers back. You see, he also taught at Penn State prior to getting the gig at Harvard, so he knows what a public school is like.

So when he hands back papers, he has the Harvard grade at the top (which is almost always an A), and he lists the "Penn State" grade next to it (ranging from A-D). Needless to say this backs up the claim that private colleges inflate grades.

That doesn't make any sense. There's far too many variables to account for that the article never took into account.

Or the private university has more of an incentive to "cheat" in order to make up for the resources that a small university lacks. I mean it costs more, it better be giving you a better education right? LOL

People have been hoodwinked much easier than that, so no worries, private schools are a BIG waste of money.

    Easily:)

weird...at my school our career services department told us recruiters added anywhere from 0.5-1.0 points to our GPA (depending on major) and thats what our state school equivalent GPA would roughly be

I honestly think thats right. For me at least, I know that there are many, many others that it wouldn't be true for.

But if I could replace Philosophy, Theology, etc as part of X's Jesuit education core and could replace it with blow-offs at OSU (not that OSU is blow-off, thats just the classes I would take haha) I'd go from a 3.1 to probably a 3.8.

Depending on the school. Safe to assume an Ivy graduate, no matter how they did, will still make much more money throughout his or her life than a non-Ivy. The Ivy schools may inflate the fuck out of their grades, but the name on the paper certainly makes money, deserved or not.

Yeah I should have noted an exception for the Ivy Leagues, because they have enough money and lure to be competitive without fixing everything up.

If you really want to waste your money taking these so called blow off classes, just to raise your GPA, what does that say about the quality of intelligence you possess? I'd like to see you come here and get a 3.8, I will LOL when you don't.

The Ivy League disagrees with you.

I would go to OSU for $2,000 a quarter. I think I could afford to take knitting at that price.

Well sure.. but only after you had to drop out of Electrical and then Chemical for not being able to hack it :)
  • ernest_t_bass
Grades are stupid anyway. There are so many things out there that are subjective. All tests should be objective. When you grade a kid on a "how do you feel" type question, it is invalid.

agree...especially with the way cheating is now...

hmm.... kind of bothersome to me.... makes me lose a little faith in the private school education I'm getting...

Can't disagree with the article completely, though Ivys and other well-known, elite private institutions don't fall into that...

I had a lot of friends transfer from Otterbein to OSU and talked about how much easier it is to get good grades at OSU than at Otterbein. I also knew a few people transfer in who said that Otterbein graded a lot harder than where they used to go (1 girl went to Kent and 1 girl had gone to Denison).
  • ksig489
I went to Ashland U and they had no problem giving people bad grades and then booting them out. I had 4 or 5 good friends get kicked out for bad grades over the 4 years I was there. Maybe I should have gone to Harvard and had it easy!
