Ohio's New License Plate

Now, I know some of you are going to say "that's not new!"... we had this discussion on JJ, but what is new is that as of June it will become the primary plate for anyone getting a specialty one, and in November it is replacing the current red, white, and blue "Sunburst" ones in state issued ones too.

You'll be able to keep renewing the red white and blue ones on your car, but if you have to get new plates, you're getting the new ones after Nov.

    What a mess this was:
    1. State prints tons of these plates in 2008 to replace the "Sunburst".
    2. State backtracks on forcing them (and the associated plate fee) on citizens in 2009 because of the economy, makes it available as vanity plate for like $7.50 extra (some of that fee went to a charity).
    3. Ohioans buy it at a clip that was triple that of the regular "Sunburst" one.
    4. State makes it the new default in 2010, as was the original plan.

The State didn't handle it well, but can they win? Once they realized they messed up they tried to save people money by backtracking, yet a staggering 800,000 people in 5 months spent more money in plate fees than had it just been introduced as planned all along anyway. People are stupid.

You ready to have these on your car?

The design looks like a third grade art project.

I think I am one of the few who actually likes the plate.

    I agree I hate it.

    NOT a fan.

Is this some type of April fools joke? I hope when I need new plates they won't have this design anymore.

It's actually a little embarrassing to me. They are absolutely horrible looking and whoever designed them should be put in jail.

I won't have one on my vehicles until I am forced.

We simply renew our existing plates and add the sticker.

I wish we took a european approach and had simple plates with a neutral background and black, raised letters.

Between this and the pink Driver Licenses, I have to wonder which kindergarden class is running the BMV. Seriously, how hard is it to come up with something neutral for those that don't want to look like we are driving around with a barnyard scene on our bumper and a fake ID in our wallet?

Suddenly, I have a craving for Bob Evans...

This is the one of the few things I like about Virginia. They do have many options for plates, but their standard plate looks like this:
  • Glory Days
one of my buddies got one a few months ago, at first glance i thought it was from PA.

Society....that would be perfect in my opinion.
  • Fly4Fun
I think the plate looks awful... and feminine.
  • dazedconfused
    i don't mind it

    This.

I hate you if you own a farm and I sure as hell don't want anything pink in my wallet.

    I have one already.

    haha

goofy looking, we need a more classy looking plate, not something like a child's drawing

Words can't describe how much I detest the thought of that corny, crappy plate ever being attached to my car. That plate tells people, "Hi, I'm from Ohio and I SUCK!!!!"

Which is true...but I don't want my license plate giving it away.
  • justcompete
Great idea.........lets make a plate that has blue and gold as the primary colors. Dumb asses.

I'd be all for it if the plane was crashing into the barn. Thats how we could get some red in there, with flames.

    $$$$

Haven't they rolled out 3 or 4 different plates in the past decade?

As i said at first, how is this "$$$$$$"?

The state shelved rolling them out full scale before (IN ORDER TO SAVE PEOPLE MONEY), and was content to distribute them as vanity plates instead to those who wanted it.

3 out of 4 Ohioans STILL bought the plate, at its increased fee, over the past 5 months that it has been available instead of getting the old design for the usual price. The demand is obviously there so they are going to simply use it to exhaust the supply they have. Now, people will get that plate at the standard fee, so it actually SAVES people money who want it.

They're not forcing you to buy new plates, you can still renew the old ones, so it's not a money grab. The only place they made extra money was on the poor bastards who paid extra for the plate over the past 5 months. They tried to save people money, and the people wouldn't let them!

(FYI: To answer your other question, bicentennial plates came out in like 2000 or 2001, Sunburst ones were 2003-2004)

That plate will look like shit on the Bentley.
