Can McDaniels Save McKinley Football?

  • Al Bundy
    http://www.usatodayhss.com/akron/article/high-school-football-thom-mcdaniels-is-set-to-return-for-second-stint-as-canton-mckinley-coach--1.473348

McKinley has turned to their all-time winningest head coach in an attempt to save their program. The powers that be in Canton have become very frustrated with the huge gap that exists between McKinley and Massillon. The article states that "In addition to his coaching responsibilities at McKinley, McDaniels will serve in a yet to be determined role where he possibly will assist the district as it implements a systemic plan to increase the expectations of all the district’s sports programs." In other words, they are hiring a full-time employee to do what we at Massillon have been able to do through our booster club. Do you think that this is a good use of taxpayer money? Is it possible that McKinley's "systematic plan" can come anywhere close to how well our "systematic plan" has been working in Massillon?

You mean like not having a title since the playoffs started? Lots of teams have had that type of success!

That is said a lot, but it simply is not true. We won the AP title in 1972 (the first year of the playoffs).

The AP title. 22 years ago.

    Wow.

    That is impressive.

To be honest, I dont know how it was back then but people dont really care about the AP title. They care about the champions won on the field. This year 4 of the 7 were not ranked #1 in the final AP poll before the playoffs.

a 5th ranked, 2nd ranked, 5th ranked, and a 6th ranked team won titles in 4 of the divisions.

As off as the rankings can be nowadays, it most likely was more brutal back in the day. At least nowadays the voters can watch, follow, read up on stats and keep tabs on teams around the state much, much better and get a little better feel.

AP title 22 years ago...and you think that McKinley is trying to follow that 'systemic plan' for success??!!!?!?!?!?!??!!!!

I will give you props on your name though.

On a more somber note, I wonder how things would have been differently if Coach John Reed, God Rest His Soul, had taken the Massillon job a number of years ago instead of ultimately staying put.

Actually, that was 42 years ago.

In a one game playoff, anything can happen. Just look at what has happened during March Madness this year. The AP poll looks at the total body of work. A team cannot get fluke wins 10 weeks in a row. The AP poll shows dominance and greatness over 2.5 months, not just someone getting lucky for 2.5 hours.

Oh yeah, nice math on my part!

but anyways.....I am a proponant, as I would believe most are, of a tournament/playoff/postseason in sports, especially at the HS levels where you play such a very small sample from mostly just the general area where the school is located.

The concern is that weird things can happen in a single game playoff. Weather can have a huge impact. We currently have interest from kids that come from 14 states, 2 countries, and Washington D.C. Many of these kids have never seen snow in their lives (in addition to never have played in it). The 48 minutes of a single game under terrible conditions is just too small of a sample size.

Some conferences are much tougher than others and with diff divisions if you prefer/think a poll for the reg season is better than you have to try and justify possible losses by school A vs wins by School B in totally different parts of the state. For instance, locally since 1994 10 times a team has won a state title but didnt even win the league. The voting is all fun and games, and a best educated guess, but when you have to start factoring in wins and losses against for teams all across the state in different divisions it just isnt a good way of determining the best team.

Do you see what you are saying?
    This is HIGH SCHOOL.

    Not college.

and btw...our school has interest from kids, well, from within the district, and does quite well.

We are fortunate to have a great partnership with Nike http://www.studentsports.com/blog/2014/02/15/massillon-nike-combine-recap/ The success of this has been the driving force behind McKinley developing their "systematic plan" in the hopes that they will be able to compete in the future. The last head coach at McKinely was winless against us.

Good for you. I imagine Nike loves the support.

but it still doesnt explain this systematic plan for success that you supposedly have and that McK is trying to copy it so they can compete.

Some people measure success by wins and losses, and I guess other schools measure it by how many diff states/countries they have kids flock in to attend their tryouts.

I wish you success and maybe next year you will have kids from 25 states, 4 countries and Washington DC have interest in your program.

The partnership is a two-way street. We are sending the top prospect from our combine out to Nike headquarters in Oregon. As you probably know, Nike also has a partnership with the Oregon Ducks. We received a highly touted QB from Oregon a few years ago. The partnership is designed to be beneficial to all parties involved.

We can only dream that our national program grows to those levels in only a year.

The "systematic plan" are the words of Canton's superintendent. They are tired of playing little brother to us for the past 120 years.

    Again.

    That is great.

You would think if a team has such a national program that they would be good enough to win state titles. I guess Massillon folks such as yourself would rather tout your relationship with Nike, the Oregon Ducks, etc, than a team that brings home the hardware.

I am not trying to slam you, but come on. You want to talk about being a national program then shouldnt you be dominating in your own state? I dont have any dog in this fight. I dont support a team, or a league, that would ever go against Massillon so it is not like I have some deep seeded jealousy towards the program.

I guess I measure the true success of the program by how it performs on the field, and not by the external things you are guaging success on.

and btw..I was up in your general neck of the woods on saturday. What the heck is up with a town called "center of the world?!!!!

I am a Massillon fan. When thinkthick referred to you as a Massillon fan a few days ago, you told him "How many times do you have to be told that I'm not a Massillon fan either? Does my screen name say GoTigers? Reading is hard!" I suggest that you learn how to read as well. If you learn how to read, you may even get promoted off of graveyard shift.

We do bring home the hardware. We have more national championships than anyone else in the country. We have 9 national championships. That is more than most states have.

Just in case you are legit, as I dont listen to that DB gochefs, when was the last NC? If it was way back before the playoffs in ohio then I wouldnt even consider that because it has been pretty much proven if they were all they were cracked up to be they would be winning state titles.

    and they arent, so.........

Our last national title was in 1961. If these were so easy to come by, how come none of the other of the thousands of high schools across America have been able to accomplish this feat? If you go around the country, everyone knows Massillon football. We are the only high school game that you can bet on in Vegas. We had Vince Vaughn do a SportsCenter commercial for us.

As far as gochiefs, I know that he can get annoying at times, but it is hard to hate a retard. He is a grown man that is stuck working graveyard, and he is fascinated by cars going around in circles. He kind of sucks at running the high school football portion of this website. If I ran the high school football forum, I could get more posts in April than he has generated in January-March. (cue gochiefs making up some lame excuses why this forum struggles under his leadership, but it is not his fault at all)

National Championships in HS....well.........There is absolutely NO WAY voters can compare teams across the country. It is all just guesswork.
    You hold onto those "championships"

We both disagree with his belittling of our national championships. We know his school doesn't have nine like we do. His school probably doesn't have any. We just are so proud to be the most successful high school ever. Thavoice is entitled to his opinion, but I think it would change if his team ever won a national championship.
