We are saved! Republicans control Senate

  • CenterBHSFan
It won't matter one bit how many republican senators there are if Obama decides not to work with them. Let's see if he's got enough wits about him to do this.

King Barry will simply dig in his heels even more and demonstrate that he - and only he - can save us from the eeeevil Republican onslaught via the mighty veto pen.

    Book it.

    Yay.

    They're still all corrupt.

Still not 60, so really does not matter in terms of passing anything.
And, if I hear any talk of getting rid if the filibuster, I will laugh my ass off as the R's have used that for years in the Senate.

But, the power will come in controlling the committees, which I fear will just turn into witch hunts like the House and will not be used to cut things and offer solutions.
Ball is in your court R's to offer both Houses real solutions.

How do the R's plan to get to 60 votes?

They don't need to. If Harry chooses not to play ball, then they'll spend two years as "the party of no" before the next election.

Harry Reid was the most vile and partisan SML in decades. Removing him from control is a huge boost to productivity. We might even pass a real budget.

While the Senate number is somewhat surprising, the biggest number of the night was the GOP's performance at the gubernatorial level. I don't know of anyone who saw that beatdown coming.

I did not see that coming.

How do you get to 60? There are still 7-8 D's that need to be convinced of any budget. How do you get them on board? That is the big question.

    Agreed.
Maryland, my state now, is the big shock. Brown was a huge favorite. Hogan (who I admit I voted for) played a brilliant strategy. He hammered Brown on his ties to the current Governor and that Maryland is like the 3rd highest taxed state. It is pretty much. He ran ads with D's and Independents saying they do not want higher taxes and want lower ones. Worked and was one of the main reasons why I voted for Hogan. Some of the taxes in this state are insane.

I'm fucking pumped about Rauner winning in Illinois. Quinn was a fucking joke and I think Illinoisans finally saw that and are sick of it. Rauner was some iffy social views but he's a self made gajillionaire who people believe can financially turn this state around.

Also big ups to Washington DC and Oregon for legalizing marijuana.

It's been a few years since my stoner days so I couldn't care less about that from a personal point of view. But weed needs to be legalized. Period. The amount of money individual states and the federal government can make off its legalization is astronomical. And it's almost 2015. A non-lethal plant not being allowed is very prohibition-esque.

Now those bastards in DC better not veto it. The people's voice has been heard, they better not silence them.

Since Harry did such an excellent job establishing the precedent of using reconciliation for whatever floats your boat, I doubt Mitch is sweating the 60 thing much.

It's a step in the right direction for DC. Still can't sell pot.

You're right. Nothing will change, but instead of Reid being the obstructionist, it will be Obama. And that will doom Hillary in 2016. It may be a lot closer to 60 than you think. A lot of those Dems may not vote with Obama anymore. They may fear being ousted in 2016.

This will be the interesting action/non-action in my view. Seeing how D.C. isn't a State and that the Feds have not been enforcing the usage in other States, it will be worthy of note to see if they act or not as you stated to veto this.

What is the veto policy in DC, since, like you said, it isn't a true state?

I'm not sure exactly but I believe the House has veto ability over DC legislation.

"...Congress retains the power to review most laws passed by the D.C. City Council, and they have exercised that power selectively to politicize certain issues that would otherwise be local in nature. ..."

Yep. And now, all the bills that really matter in turning this ship around will actually get to the president's desk. He can either be the president of 'No', and continue his unilateral assault on America, or he can do the right things.

    I'm not sure.
I think it really depends how the R's run the Senate. If they go a middle, moderate way, and actually propose good ideas, bills should get to the floor and passed. But, if they go the Cruz route, I could easily see some filibustering and stonewalling again.

I really really hope the Senate Committees do not turn into a witch hunting fiasco.
If the R's care about really leading, offer up new budget proposals to reduce the budget and piece together a replacement for Obamacare.

The D's are not going to just rollover and die in the Senate. They will pin all their hopes on stopping any R advancement for 2016. Tis the political world we live in. Gridlock will continue.

Do you really think things like Cruz's little stunt is in the same galaxy as Reid's unprecedented "the minority can just STFU" actions as leader in terms of why things didn't get done?

Not really, but I doubt the the minority can just STFU will stop now.
I fear the R's will act just like the D's did.

In some ways, I suppose they might. OTOH, they'll probably actually do their farking job and pass some bills and stuff...which would be a refreshing change of pace.

Only if they pass bills with some input from the minority that aren't just a partisan tactic to force Obama to veto a bunch of stuff.

The Republicans rightly complained about how badly they were treated when the Democrats had the power. The question is will the Republicans set their bar at the same level for petty spite, or will they actually attempt to govern?
