gutI have no respect for Goolsbee as I've seen him making the rounds on tv obfuscating the facts. Kind of a disturbing trend to see academics use their reputation for credibility when they wouldn't dare stake their reputation (i.e. published research) on what they are about to say.
And this is a great number for the Obama camp....First everyone is going to blame this on the payroll tax hike, and then you get to crank-up the hyperbole saying "just wait until sequestration hits". This must be a great relief, because for a while there it was starting to look like this administration was full of shit. -

Seriously, we are in a lot of trouble and it isn't just the U.S. The "west" (which includes the EU) is on the verge of losing an entire generation. I can walk into a coffee shop, a fast food joint or a grocery store and can't find a worker under the age of 30 - because there are no jobs for them and they hang out at the park across the street drinking every night. I don't think that is exceptional to the UK. I don't know of a single person 25 or under (the approximate age of my cousins/in-laws) that has a permanent job that even remotely has a compensation to pay their rent plus student loans. I know we subsidize my sister-in-law who has a job that 20 years ago would only require a HS degree.
But yeah, again we're all doing great...move along, nothing to see here. -

I went to Burger King today and was waited on by 2 girls who were around 20
I'm 24 and work at a grocery store.
Your argument is invalid -
Manhattan BuckeyeYou don't live in the UK.
I've lived here for 3 weeks and haven't seen any employee more than 10 years younger than me. Notice in my post I mentioned the "West" - that includes the employment craphole that is UK/Eurozone right now. It is going to be an issue. -
Manhattan Buckeye"I went to Burger King today and was waited on by 2 girls who were around 20"
And BTW, do you thing those BK girls make a salary that could pay the rent?
The Obamaconomy has been a $&%&ing disaster. Even his biggest sycophants have to look at reality. If he was GOP'er I'd say the same thing. We're in big, big trouble. -

Manhattan BuckeyeNice response. You obviously can't defend Obama so you turn into an anti-GOP thing. It is difficult to refrain from making fun of the few "leftists" on this board when you can't even make an argument.
Do you even have a point? Or am I supposed to get off enjoying our #&%^ economy. -

Our economy is not NEARLY as bad as some of you would like to think it is. If it was....why are baseball stadiums, and resturants like BW3's,AppleBees,and Red Lobster full every night? -
Manhattan Buckeye"If he was a Republican...you'd be masterbating to pictures of him every night because you would think he's the greatest thing ever"
Our economy is in trouble...Friday's jobs report was about as bad as it gets. We have the lowest employment participation in decades. What do you think these people are doing? They are living off of benefits that causes our record deficits.
This is the worst time since the Great Depression for 20-somethings - and even if you don't appreciate trickle-down economics, we're finding out that trickle-up poverty sucks for everyone. -
gutPart of the problem is Obama knows as much about the economy and business as Diane DeGette knows about guns.

Companies are posting record profits and you're talking about trickle up poverty? I can't take you serious anymore after that statement -

The record profits are because they continue to be hesitant to invest retained earnings into additional capital for expansion. Why do you think they have such hesitation?Ty Webb;1421153 wrote:Trickle up poverty?? Are you stupid??

Our economy is exactly what most people think it is. Minimal GDP growth combined with sustained poor unemployment levels...and no reason to believe it will change anytime soon.Ty Webb;1421146 wrote:...

Manhattan BuckeyeWhat percentage of companies are having record profits? Many banks are still suffering losses - particularly the community banks that accepted TARP funds and haven't paid a cent back yet. And how much are we still down from our GM bailout? US$10B? $20B?
-
gutAnd they are already priming the pump for Fannie and Freddie to start pushing home loans to people that can't afford them again.
Do people not realize that, in addition to a bunch of bad economic/regulatory policies wholly Obama's, Washington is putting the same policies on steroids that people blame Bush for ruining our economy? One has to be incredibly stupid and/or partisan to call Bush a failure and Obama some sort of success.
That can't be emphasized enough. Aside from Dodd Frank and Obamakare - neither of which remotely approach what you'd call a success - take a good hard look at the economic landscape. We are setting up for something much worse than the housing collapse, and to boot we aren't seeing any of the benefit from this reflation. -

Not Paul Krugman, but he has a Nobel Prize so he has that going for him. He's absolutely turned a 180 in his economic theory. -
