  Why would the teacher even bring this topic up in a German class? What does sexual orientation have to do with learning a foreign language?

  WOW! You know very little about history. The Nazis threw 100,000 gay men into the concentration camps. Only 4000 survived. The Nazis justified this because of a law implemented in Germany in 1871 called Proposition 175 making homosexuality illegal. Strangely enough, the law was not repealed after the war, and gay men and lesbians were still considered to be criminals. The law was not thrown out until 1994.

  I was a high school Spanish teacher and I did teach some culture in addition to the language itself. Most language teachers do this.

  As a matter of record, I have lived in Spain, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Panama. I talked about the histories of these countries and showed the many photographs I took when I was there.

  There is a difference between talking about some of the culture of counties where a language is spoken and getting on a soapbox with a definite agenda. I find it hard to believe that the moral issue of being gay is on the curriculum of any high school German class.

  Actually, my church (almost the entire church) volunteers at a local youth center that provides anti-bullying education, as well as care for kids in the area that are not only bullied at school, but bullied at home.

  The reality is that there are a LOT of churches that get involved in just such matters. I can think of at least three within half an hour drive from my home, and those are just the ones I know of.

  What kind of company is it? If it is a religiously-motivated entity (a church, ministry, etc.), then that would make some sense, but if not, I don't think they have grounds to require that. Even as a Christian, I'd push that envelope.

  I don't mind that. People of like minds tend to congregate, ESPECIALLY if they feel as though they are the minority. I've certainly heard of religiously-targeted events, politically-targeted events, ethnically-targeted events, age-targeted events, etc.
  
  However, those groups tend to take pride in being who they are. They are often able to distinguish that being seen as different doesn't equate to being seen as better or worse.

  The right to express beliefs is, and should always be, permitted. Unless you infringe on someone else's actual rights, you are free to express your beliefs, and no amount of legislation should EVER take that away. Such legislation would be blatantly unconstitutional.

  This is a very good description, I think, of why people are so bothered by him. I know for a fact that he's not the only member of the LGBT community on this board, and yet the other one posts with humility, rationality (for the most part ), and does not scream victimization where there is none. He certainly has spoken out against injustice as it pertains to the LGBT community, but he doesn't go further than is justified by fact.

  I know what it's like to be brainwashed by a church. When I was growing up, I had a Sunday School teacher (the preacher's wife) who harped every Sunday about how all Jews were going to hell because they didn't accept Jesus. In a town like Steubenville will a large Jewish population, this doesn't go over very well. Fortunately, we got rid of the Sunday School teacher and the preacher before they could do much damage.

  I just watched ABC News. They told about yet another 14-year-old boy who committed suicide because he was constantly bullied for being gay. Yes, as a matter of record, I do hate anyone who in any way, shape, or form had anything to do with his death. You call me arrogant. I call myself a crusader. I will do anything in my power to prevent these suicides from happening, even if that means attacking churches that preach bigotry.
  
  The good news is that the world is changing and in our favor. Someday these suicides won't happen, and I just hope I'm still alive to see it.
