Do unions help or hurt workers today?

    Boeing wants to build a plant in South Carolina. A right to work state, so of course this happens.
    The NLRB on Wednesday said Boeing had violated federal labor law when it decided to open a second assembly line for its 787 Dreamliner airplanes in a non-union plant in South Carolina rather than in a union factory near its headquarters outside Seattle.

    The complaint alleges that Boeing’s decision was based on the company’s desire to retaliate against the union that represents Boeing workers in Washington, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. According to the complaint, that’s a violation of federal labor law.

    Boeing said it will go forward with its South Carolina plans while it fights the NLRB complaint.

After tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs and countless wasted hours collecting sufficient legal paperwork to cover the bases to satisfy the union thugs, it is indeed possible to fire a union worker. It's easier on the bottom-line for management of most union shops to "deal with the lazy worker" than "invest" in shit canning them.

    Boeing can build a plant wherever they want, but no- we can't have jobs in a right to work state. More proof that the left could care less about jobs, or employment, or self-respect. They care about union jobs, and forced participation by workers.

    Seriously, unions are about money and power -- nothing else. If you believe otherwise, you are deluding yourself.

    8. Unions are all about their own survival; not the best interests of the workers from whom they confiscate their living.
    9. Unions insure their existence by confiscating labor from their membership and passing it on to leftist politicians.

    I was a both a member of AFSCME as a state employee and had to deal with union reps as a supervisor. I saw first-hand all the waste that goes on (union reps that do nothing all day but union tasks but are paid by the state), spending time protecting people who should have long ago been fired, and generally disrupting business all in the name of flexing union muscle and little more.

    If unions are such a great thing and not just about power and money -- then let's make union membership VOLUNTARY in Ohio. Nobody has to belong, and nobody has to pay fair share.

    Do that, and I have no problem with unions of any kind because they truly are a voluntary organization.

    well then i guess you didnt hold any elected union position , meaning you have no knowledge of the inner working of the union. you are just a some one on the outside looking in. and probably jealous also.

    The union i'm a part of in New Zealand has been great thus far.

    My experience with public service unions in the United States...terrible. Only my limited experience, but still, i wasn't impressed at all.

    You're right, I didn't get to take part in the graft and corruption that typically follows union "leaders". I didn't get to receive an overly inflated "salary" taken off the backs of workers who could least afford the "dues" each paycheck.

    I was such a fool not to become callous, self-centered and power-driven like the other union reps I saw at work; the ones who enjoyed bullying other people, whether it was supervisors who didn't know the union handbook, or employees who were foolish enough to question what the reps were doing.

    Yeah, I was just a jealous little puppy.

    i'm sure you took part in sucking up to your boss that is typical of supervisors . always tryin hang some one to make themselves look better in hopes of climbing up the company ladder. its apparent from your disdain that are typical company lackey that the union got the better of because you didnt know the "union handbook" which is called a contract. but then again its always cool for the companies to violate the terms of the contract.

    Right, because in state government your boss can just promote you because you're a good worker (and suck up) -- of wait, NO HE CAN'T. The union rules get in the way. Who is it that doesn't know the contract rules?

    You're right about one thing: the union did get the better of me in one instance. They were successful at keeping a drunk on the job, despite the fact that she (1) did no work (2) left work without permission and then went to a bar to get drunk several times a week (3) had a foul mouth and a poor disposition. She was a great example of a public union in action -- and one all the union bosses and members should be very proud of. A drunk kept her job while some other, more deserving person was unable to move up.

    Thankfully, I did end up taking a job (a much, much better one) away from that nonsense and didn't have to deal with it.

    I may be an idiot, but the list I provided was all of the typical stereotypes of unions our right-wing posters come up with whenever a union thread comes up. If I had been quicker I would have put that list up as the first reply and saved them the trouble. It's like a broken record, just like all of their hate for anything Democrat or Obama.

    It's never about just disagreeing with policies where liberals are concerned -- it's all about HATE. If you disagree with the president, you HATE him (probably because he's black...gotta get the race card in there, too). If you don't like tax and spend policies that put the country on the brink of economic ruin, it's because you HATE (pick one) old people, poor people, disabled people -- not because you want to see fiscal responsibility.

    You talk about how predictable those on the right are, but it's the left that has literally written a book on how to handle political "discourse" -- a guy by the name of Alinsky, I believe. And his rules have been right there, front and center, for a couple decades now.

    Read through them and tell me again about which side goes straight for the stereotypes and uses the tactics of blame, shame and hatred.

    You would see union thuggery come out full force if something like that ever is proposed. It would take away the very lifeline of union power (easy money) and they would do anything to keep that from happening. History has proven it.
