WriterbuckeyeCould you have picked a more left leaning group for that "analysis"?
Of course they're not going to like what he's doing. They'd prefer to see the government creating jobs and redistributing wealth, like all good liberals these days. -
redstreak oneSpeaking of SSI, it is a wonderful thing here in good ole southeast Ohio! lol Not only do kids get it when they are identified as special needs, but people who have been out of school for years find out about it and apply since they had an IEP in school! I had a guy who went to school with me ask who he needed to talk to about getting his transcripts and IEP sent to Cbus for SSI, he quit school in 89~!
Now, who would take school serious when you are handed 800 or more per month for not doing your work?
I think this is where a lot of you just dont get it! Gblock works in a poor urban district where just getting by on the govt dime is a great way of life for a percentage of the population. Same for most of southeast ohio, just getting by is enough for some of these people.
Many of you dont or havent witnessed growing up or where you live! Its out there folks, believe me I work with it every day! -

I live close (on the outskirts) of Bellaire. Where very literally half the town was ripped out for the new section of highway. Probably about 40-50 houses falling in on themselves, state has taken over the school, just the sort of situation you think is so rare. It's not.
Where's the fine line (lol, I know) between reason and excuse? -
O-TrapI live in North Hill in Akron, OH. Trust me, I'm surrounded by people who would rather scrape by on a "guv'mint check" and not work than have a job and be semi-well off. The poverty here is overwhelming, but a lot of it IS by choice.
Neighbor boy once asked me why I was dressed up and leaving in the morning. I told him I was going to work. He had no concept of that, and couldn't understand it. His mom, grandmother, grandfather, uncle, and a few other relatives all live under the same roof, and none of them have jobs. -

im from wheeling and bellaire has the same problems if not worse as inner city columbus...and yes it is a fine line...i hate excuses and we have a goal of 90 percent graduation by 2012CenterBHSFan;735815 wrote:I live close (on the outskirts) of Bellaire. redstreak oneSo if some on here have first hand experience why is so much disdain placed upon public state employees and not those truely living off the govt dime? You can almost smell the cra[ being thrown around by both sides, when medicaid, ssi and welfare fraud probably accounts for more than all of ohios pensions and benefits combined! lol
I have said since sb5 was introduced there were some parts of it that would benefit all sides. I have a big dog in this fight, both my wife and I teach! It just irks me to see the fraud and waste going on, not just by those getting govt help, but doctors and such abusing the system as well, but if someone were to come on this thread you would think state employees were satans right hand men!
I know why many dont want to touch welfare and medicaid and ssi, the kids. The kids are innocent in all of it. They are pawns, but what is the tipping point for many of you on this issue? -
CenterBHSFanredstreak, I'm hoping you've read this thread, the SB5 thread, and the Wisconsin thread. People have explained their issues 20x's a piece.
If you have, then I have to assume that you're question is rhetorical and ideological in nature.
If you haven't, then hopefully you take the time to do so! -

This is a straw man argument and has no place in the discussion. You want to start another thread on it, believe me, you'll get an electronic "earful" from folks like me who are sick of the generational "poverty" that government breeds.
But spare me the "it's for the kids" crap. Politicians use that ALL the time and it never fails to make me want to vote the other way. It's become cliche to the point I just don't give a damn. If someone brings it up, I figure the discussion is over and they've conceded because they don't have any real arguments to make.
The "kids" as I see it are victims now -- of a school system that is broken and ineffective for the money that's being poured into it. They deserve better, and freeing up the school districts from the oppressive thumb of the NEA and its crony subdivisions is a good first step.
Also, "the kids" will be the one to shoulder this mountain of growing debt for the rest of their lives if we don't start bringing down the costs of government EVERYWHERE. That debt is as much a potential security threat to their future as any terrorist.
So if you REALLY are concerned about "the kids" then it's time to change the system; free it from the bonds of union shackles, and allow other competing entities help to spur improvement and innovation in education. -

Please understand that it doesn't have to be an "either/or" subject. I am VERY upset by the abuse of the system I see. I get infuriated when I hear the neighbors turn off their 60" television and all hop in their Lincoln Navigator to go grocery shopping with their food stamps (true story!).
However, these people don't really have any more ability to "strong-arm" anyone than I do in terms of the assistance they get. Large Unions, on the other hand, have become nothing short of bullies, in a sense. That's what irks me about this.
For what it's worth, I have a dog in this fight as well. My wife is a teacher. Quite honestly, I'd prefer that extra $1200 a year to go into our bank account instead of toward Union dues. She actually agrees. I swear my wife is the only teacher I know who supports SB5 (I knew I married her for a good reason! ). -
Gblockif she's paying 1200 a year for union dues she needs to talk to someone in payroll because they are taking too much of her money...it should be somewhere around 840 and change

I've been told that the amount varies from district to district. We'll have to look into it.
However, it's still repulsive that she is forced to put a single penny into it, since she isn't a part of the Union. -

How long do we give Kasich to prove his hair brained ideas? Seriously, he has a BA in political science. How the hell did he get elected? In an interview during the campaign, Kasich spouted off four States that he said Ohio should model. Four States that he said were the fastest job growth States in the nation: Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Nevada. Unfortunately for Kasich, almost immediately after he gave this interview, Nevada overtook Michigan for the State with the highest unemployment rate in the nation. How is Ohio stacking up to the no-income tax/Right to Work States ten months later? According to the March unemployment rates for the States, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks the States Kasich named back in June 2010 as “leading the nation” on jobs as follows:
23rd: Texas (8.1%)
29th: Ohio (8.9%)
37th: Tennessee (9.5%) (tied with Washington, D.C. and Arizona)
49th: Florida (11.1%)
51st: Nevada (13.2%)

Four years is what the Ohio Constitution calls for. -
WriterbuckeyeWell, Strickland got four years, even though he turned out to be the most inept, incompetent governor Ohio has seen since Gilligan.

Gilligan is not amused. -

Yet the whole horse complex at the fairgrounds is named after gilligan. Horses ass maybe? -
queencitybuckeyeTaft isn't getting his love here. He was every bit as inept as the others mentioned.

Thread BomberKasich is flying off the handle...... Save that money Gov
I mean Fuck.... You can drive anywhere in the state from Columbus in 2 hours
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/ohio-news/kasich-state-plane-use-off-to-fast-pace--1138062.htmlIn his first 81 days in office, the Republican Kasich used the Hawker-Beechcraft King Air planes for 16 in-state trips and four out-of-state treks at a total cost of $31,400. By comparison, former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland spent $31,849 on plane travel during his first 13 months in office. -
WriterbuckeyeYeah and Strickland often used it empty or mostly empty for shorter trips -- which was both wasteful and stupid.
The plane is there and paid for, and if it helps the governor do a better job to be able to flex his schedule more using the damn thing, then use it.
In the overall scheme of things, it's a minor cost and allows people who are very well paid to make better use of their time. Spending thousands of dollars per hour in salaries for the governor and staff to drive isn't a wise use of resources, either. -
I Wear PantsThe plane isn't "there and paid for" however I don't see a problem with this. Dude took 20 flights in 60 days, not exactly an insane pace. Plus it's not like it was millions of dollars or something. Unless the dude was flying to things that were in no way relevant to anything he should be doing as governor I don't care how many flights he takes.
-
O-TrapIn-state flights! LOCK HIS ASS UP!
-
WriterbuckeyeThis "argument" is ONLY about bashing Kasich because of other reasons (usually SB5). These folks complaining probably didn't give a damn when any other governor used the jet for similar work in the past. It's because they hate Kasich for trying to reign in the public unions and save the state money.
-
O-TrapYeah, that damn gub'ner taking all them trips in the fancy airo-plane!!!
