My kids have full knowledge of the purpose of condoms. I lay out all the facts and consequences that come with sex. Sometimes in uncomfortable raw language coming from the old man. But that is my responsibility as a parent. I give them my advice and counsel, tempered with my life experience. Their choices in this area are now in their hands. -

Curly JFootwedge;417356 wrote:Why would anyone choose to be gay?
I'm not saying I personally believe they choose as I know better than that. All I'm saying once again that it can APPEAR that way and that's why many anti-gay people think that.
I guess I gotta come clean...instead of playing the ass.
I'm not anti-gay at all, but I haven't always been that way. Growing up in the country, being in the Military in the 80's, will breed an atmosphere of gay bashing. I was never taught to hate or bash gays by my parents only that it was an abomination to God, from the church. I had some expierences when I worked at a certain job. I was a Security Guard assigned to guard an area that had expensive equipment that belonged to a TV Station. Cars started showing up in this parking lot, a couple right up to mine and just they would just stare at me, and I had to run them off. I found out a short time later, by the local police, that it was a gay hangout where they would meet up. One dude got mad and asked "Why do you always have something against us"...Even then it wasn't personal, just doing my job for $5.50 an hour. Kinda pissed me off that the only reason I ran him off was beacuse he was gay according to him. Straight, gay, white, black, green, or striped, it would make no difference to me. Just doing my shitty paying job...and got accused of being a basher in the process. That all led me with thinking that gays were 'bad'.
It wasn't until 14-15 years ago when I got away from the rednecks I was running with, some relatives included, that my attitude changed concerning them.
I was introduced to my Wife via the gay couple that lived next door to me at the time. I had that same couple over to my house for 2 Easters before they moved out west. It actually opened up the eyes to one of my relatives, who had never even met a gay couple, to what they were really like. Since then I've never heard him say an ill word about them. He even occasionally asks us about them. My Wife's best friend is gay. He worked for her back when he was in High School in the early 90's...and before he came out of the closet. In fact she was the first one he told he was gay. We as a couple, go out with him and his partner more than any other of our 'couple friends'. We've been to gay bars together on several occasions along with different Pride Festivals and fund raisers. Actually the wife and I prefer to go to gay bars when we are in Cincy. She's kinda a 'fag hag' so she gets lots of free drinks and I don't have to worry about getting in a fight if I look at another man's girl. Hell I even got 'attacked/kinda a package check' by some drunk in a gay bar while walking across the room. I didn't knock his head off. After all I was in his environment and didn't wanna get us all kicked out. Plus how could I explain to my redneck friends that if he beat me up in the process, that I got my ass kicked by a gay guy...It was a joke my gay friends with me at the time even laughed at.
The only reason I'm playing the Devil's Advocate is the way that Fairwood is comming off as 'the world is against me and all gays'. In the process he's manged to show me he don't care about sexual orientation in general when it comes to not being fired, as long as he's protected...even in an enviroment where currently neither are protected. That will make even people like me feel like "I'm supposed to help your cause and the hell with me?" I've had this happen before when a woman wanted me to sign a petition about going after dead beat Dad's. I refused because at the time I was a child support paying Dad that didn't get to see my child, since she was in Nebraska and the ex wife was totally controlled by her new husband. What I'm supposed to jump on HER cause because it's the right thing to do, but I was on the opposite end of it and no one cared and I wasn't protected. I'm all for supporting causes as long as it doesn't hurt me.
I'm sorry Fairwood already has some rights I don't, besides the whole Health Insurance domestic partner thing I brought up earlier in this thread...He can start a thread on here called Gay Pride and it's cool. I don't think LJ will let me start a topic called White Pride...I'd be labeled as a racist even though I'm not that either.
I held off long enough to post this ...So now pile on me, yes even you Fairwood. -

Opinion, not fact.FairwoodKing;417103 wrote:Your argument is bullshit. Vegans choose to be what they are. Gays do not choose.
Opinion, not fact.Gay men who marry women almost always get themselves into a mess.
Anecdotal evidence at best.First, they have to think about men just to have sex with their wives. Then when the wife finds out (and she usually does), there is a messy divorce. I have many friends who have found themselves in these situations.
In Ohio, the law doesn't protect straight people either, so why do homosexuals deserve preferential treatment? In Ohio, the law doesn't protect us. -
Con_AlmaFootwedge;417356 wrote:Why would anyone choose to be gay?
It really doesn't matter if one chooses or not.
Having homosexual desires is not illegal however there are certain actions that are not legal or permitted.
That pertains to everyone. Desires and wishes are not restricted certain actions are.
Desires and wishes may or may not be chosen. Actions are. -

The reality is that you don't get fired for being straight but people do get fired for being gay. This is the way the real world operates.
Washington where I live is an at-will state, also. But if you're fired for being gay (or female or old or Jewish, etc.) , you do have considerable legal recourse. That's what we want for the whole country.
Anecdotal evidence does not count. Provide links in Ohio of people being fired recently for being gay, and you'll have a point. -
jmogFairwoodKing;417296 wrote:People's beliefs can be changed. It wasn't so many years ago that Christians (especially in the South) believed that black people should be slaves because the Bible says that people of color were enslaved. It took women thousands of years to get their rights because the Bible says that woman is merely the rib of Adam. Eventually, Christians (and people of other faiths) will come around to see that gay people are not sinners for what we do. A lot of Christian churches are very open to us.
It's our job to educate these people to show them that their beliefs are wrong.
Good Lord you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.
1. Show me the verse where the Bible says "yes, black people should be slaves". Now, are there historical records in the Bible of slavery? Yes, but at no point does it say that one SHOULD enslave black people.
2. Merely a rib? You conveniently left out the rest of that story where God said that Eve was to be a partner or "help meet" to Adam, partner as in equal. Now, again, are there historical records in the Bible of 1000s of years of women being thought of as less? Sure, but again, show me the verse that says "women are less than men"
3. Educate "us"? Really? You are so much smarter than all Christians that you have to educate us? Kind of a pompous statement don't you think?
4. FYI, I am a very devout Christian, in a very conservative denomination (Baptist) who serves on the board of the church and teaches the junior high class....and I believe gay civil unions/marriages should be "ok" by the law as long as the government can NOT force a church to do the ceremony and no one can sue a church for refusing to do the ceremony. I believe civil unions/gay marriage should be "ok" because the government should not be in the "business" of marriage anyway so might as well make it "all" legal within reason. -
jmogFootwedge;417348 wrote:What would you do if you had a son....and at the age of 18, he told you that his innate desires regarding sex were wired towards other men?
Would you hate the little "queer" because the Bible told you to?
Again, you keep spewing bull crap that isn't even true.
The Bible teaches to hate the sin but love the sinner, not hate the sinner.
I have VERY close family members who are gay, and while they know I beleive their ACTIONS are sin, I have NEVER treated them ANY different as their sin of homosexuality is no different than my sins.
FWK you should actually read the Bible to get your "quotes" right, as you are WAY off on what it actually says.
I have 3 boys, if one of them came to me and said they were gay, it would not change my love for them at all. It would just cause me to pray for them even more to see the error in their ways. -
jmogFootwedge;417356 wrote:Why would anyone choose to be gay?
Why would anyone choose to lie, why would anyone choose to steal, why would anyone choose to cheat on their spouse.
All "sin" can have the same basic answer, "because it feels good" in one way or another. -

ManO'WarWhy would anyone really care what two consenting adults do in private???
This reminds me of the scene from American Beauty. -

I don't care what they do in private, its none of my business. That doesn't mean that I shouldn't have an opinion on whether its "right" or "wrong". -

Can you please provide references of gays in Ohio getting fired for being gay. Without it, your argument is worthless.
I know a few gay people who are gainfully employed and their job has never been in jeopardy because of their sexual preference. -
ManO'WarTo me it's like having a strong opinion on how they put the roll of toilet paper on in their bathroom, or what types of curtains they have. One, it's none of my business, and two, who cares!?
There are a lot bigger issues to worry about than what two men, or two women do with each other.
There is an old line from Cheers, where Norm says "will it change the price of beer?" when they are discussing problems.....in other words, as long as it doesn't affect you, I don't see why there is an issue. -

That's the problem, FWK can only give "well I knew a guy" anecdotal evidence. Ask him for a link to someone in Ohio who was actually fired for being gay and he'll just ignore your request like it never happened. He will then make up some "quote" from the Bible that either doesn't exist or is taken completely out of context and twisted. -

You see though, there are many things that you have a "strong opinion" on that people can do in "private" that wouldn't affect you.
I didn't say I'd "do" anything about it or even say something to them, I just said that I do have a strong opinion on what they are doing. -
ManO'WarLike what?

jmogManO'War;417808 wrote:Like what?
You might have "strong opinions" on anything that can be done in "private" from drugs, polygamy, prostitution, killing animals, creating bombs, etc.
There are plenty of things that are done "in private" that would have no bearing on you, that I'm sure you have "strong opinions" on. -
ManO'WarThose things are illegal, and you can be arrested for them. You can't be arrested for being gay.
I just heard that one of the church denominations are going to allow gay clergy.....seems times are changing. -

I'm talking about how you feel about them, not whether they are legal or not. Irregardless of their legality, you would have a "strong opinion" about some of them at least and they would have no bearing on your life. -
jmogAlso, I could name some perfectly legal things that you might have an "opinion" on as well.
If you live in an area where gun discharges/firing is perfectly legal, you might have a problem with your neighbor firing off a few rounds every day.
You might have strong opinions about prostitution even if you lived in Las Vegas or the Netherlands where it is legal.
You might have a srong opinion about marijuana even if you lived in California.
What I'm getting at is that all of these things can be done in "private", have no bearing on your life, and you could have strong feelings on some of them.
