12-man, individual styled, bracket tournament. Should be a good one.

If you are in Central Ohio and have nothing to do that day, go to the Graham/Blair dual. If that is too far, come to our tournament. We'd love to see you. Plus, we hope to be giving updates of the aforementioned dual! Best of both worlds... and Sammy Hagar is happy.

If BJ Miller from Defiance is at 119, you could really have some fireworks there

    Miller
    Perez - London
    McLaughlin - NY
    Parsons - LV
  • cruiser_96
He's been at 112 and 119 regularly. He hasn't settle in to either weight class from what I've seen. My guess is, he's doing what the team needs and/or looking for the best match-up.

I've looked through just about every weight class... if the names hold (and that's a big if with league duals and what not), I think each weight class will be at least 3 deep, with most going 4 or 5 deep. Again, that's if the names hold.
  • Bitterrunner-up
Cruiser...When will you know who's at what weight? When are rosters due?
  • cruiser_96
Line-ups are due by 2:47pm on Thursday. From there, I will compile names, criteria, records and, thus, seeds, for the tournament.

I'll post them on here for all to see. I'll also be sending a copy of the brackets (HOPEFULLY) by Friday mid-day, in order for the coaches to have a copy for Friday's practice. Feel free to change the seeds in order to have your kid as the number one seed, a la Bob Stoll circa 1980.

    Excellent, Smithers...
  • cruiser_96
Roughly 93 hours, folks. It's going to be a great day!

    See you then.
  • Bitterrunner-up
Cruiser...Using your obvious expertise and extensive knowledge, could you handicap the event? Who do you see a the top teams and individuals? Any big match-ups we should look forward to?

BTW, how's the hospitality room? (the true measure of a great tourney)
  • cruiser_96
As far as hospitality rooms are concerned, from what I hear, there is NO topping what went down last week at Gahanna. It just won't happen. However, we are promising that we can make strides to be very close to what they had, using authentic, homemade meals from parents as well as choice selections from dairy and farm markets.

Seeing as how I only have one line-up, I don't think I'll be able to break anything down just yet. But, if the names hold, the Schramm-inator and Marrero, along with McNabb (WC) could be an entertaining weight class.

Defiance will be bringing the heat. I recently checked their area's rankings and the Bulldogs are represented nicely. And it is not just BJ Miller. The team is good. Gee, you think this Ralph Cubberly guy knows something about wrestling!?!?!

In the end, I look at the scorers board every day at practice and try to pick the last place team... I can't do it. Every time I come up with a team, two or three kids with a legimtimate shot at scoring big points for their team pops into my mind.

As for who wins it, I'm at a loss. I just recently received insight on Tri-Valley... all of the sudden, they are in the mix. Nelsonville-York has HAMMERS in about 5 or 6 weight classes, so they are in the mix. On paper, Licking Valley, London and Olentangy Orange are in the lead, but who knows what Worthington Kilbourne or even us are going to pull out of our bag o' tricks!

It really is going to come down who shows up on Saturday to wrestle 6 minutes of intense and focussed matches. And, as always, it will come down to which team scores the most points after the final round is wrestled.
  • cruiser_96
    2nd page??? Yeah, right!
  • Bitterrunner-up
I was wondering when you were going to bump this up.
  • Bitterrunner-up
Cruiser...I'm sure this is a silly question, but have you looked at that 171-pound bracket? Brutal.
  • cruiser_96
Not bad, that's for sure! Heavyweight isn't going to be a walk in the park either! 112 and 119 will be fun to watch as well!

OBTW: I just finished reading the latest "Forecast for high school wrestling" and we will have 23 contestants in action Saturday. Not bad.

    That's almost 13%.

...and we'll only get a higher percentage as word spreads that YOU are there...
  • tric118
Post the Brakeman rankings by team. Nelsonville-York has 5 ranked 119 #7 Thomas Mclaughlin, Carl Moody 125 #4, 135 Zach Hook #10, 140 Dakota Hook #17, 215 Jacob Coon #13. 152 Zach Mays mentioned.
  • cruiser_96
Here you go... The number has been increased!!!!! Look at that, bitter! Just mentioning your name gained us 1.5 wrestlers!!!

    DI = 7
    DII = 13
    DIII = 5

    Trying from memory:
    DI
    1. Edwards (OO) - 103
    2. Timchenko (OO) - 112
    3. Winn (OO) - 285
    4. Marerro (RB) - 285
    5. Bailey (GM) - 171
    6. Taylor (WK) - 130
    7. Blaine (WK) - 160

    DII
    1. Miller (D) - 112
    2. Harble (LV) - 145
    3. Perez (L) - 119
    4. Schramm (L) - 285
    5. Hazlett (L) - 171
    6. Parsons (LV) - 119
    7. Thompson (L) - 125
    8. McCarthy (D) - 125
    9. Santos (L) - 130
    10. Roehrig (D) - 152
    11. Silver (L) - 160
    12. Carius (L) - 189
    13. Colvin (L) - 135***

    DIII
    1. McLaughlin (NY) - 119
    2. Moody***** (NY) - 125
    3. Z. Hook (NY) - 135
    4. D. Hook (NY) - 140
    5. Coon (NY) - 215

(Only counted those in the numbered portion.)
*** Santos and Colvin were one in the Report. However, both are on the roster for Saturday - at different weights - bringing the total to 24!

*****Moody was not on the initial roster and was not counted in the original 23 and then 24. Recently, he has been day-to-day. All reports lead to Saturday's status as "Game-time decision". This being a contract year, look for him to expect to be a go for this week as he'd like nothing more than to pad the stats to sign a lofty contract!!! And, ultimately, bringing our total to 25. :D ;) :D
  • cruiser_96
I'm still waiting on a few line-ups, but overall, things are shaping up nicely.
  • Cthelites
Good luck with your tourneys this weekend Cruiser!
    See you Sunday.
  • cruiser_96
    Schweeet.
  • cruiser_96
Seed list has been given to the coaches for final approval just in case I missed something (which is possible).

If I get no word back by 11pm, I'll post them, but do realize that some coaches might not deal with it until the morning. So if things change at noon, do get your panties in a bunch.

I look forward to putting them online!
  • Shoot and Sprawl
What are the actual numbers in each weight class?
  • cruiser_96
    Currently (as of this post)

    103 - 11
    112 - 12
    119 - 14
    125 - 12
    130 - 13
    135 - 9
    140 - 12
    145 - 13
    152 - 11
    160 - 12
    171 - 13
    189 - 13
    215 - 11
    285 - 10

This could change by tomorrow, seeing as how it just change in the last 2 hours quite a bit!

Best argument I've heard for extras is a match is always better than a bye. And it's not like we are in a two day tournament that you can make that up. I'm not opposed, just not 100% persuaded yet.

My line to a coach was I don't like extras but I HATE byes.

We'll see. The news will be put out tomorrow by 10:51am. As for now, plan to wrestle.
  • tric118
I have no extras but if somebody has them toss them in. I would rather have and extra than a bye. Just my opinion. Plus it may help a kid for next year.

    Cruiser,

    thanks for anwering my question.
    I have another.
You are using a 12 man bracket.
If an unseeded wrestler wins his first match, but loses his second match, and then proceeds to make it to the third place match, won't that exceed the 5 match limit, causing potential forfeits in the consi finals?

Have you considered at 16 man bracket with forced byes?
  • cruiser_96
It's pretty much the same thing - if I'm reading it correctly. Lines 3, 6, 11 and 14 get byes if a 16-man bracket only has 12 guys. So you end up with our style of 12-man bracket. At least that is how I created them.

Also, the 5 match limit is - admittedly - unfortunate. It burnt us two years ago at a sectional. We had to default to 6th. But, for our tournament, you did wrestle 5 quality matches in one day. Granted, you couldn't contend for a higher placement, but I don't make that rule.

SIDE NOTE: The worst is if that first match was a forfeit! That is when all heck brakes loose. But I digress...

That is how we are running it.

In the event of 13 or 14 guys, we are giving the worst records the chance to fight it out for the opportunity to wrestle the #1 or #2 seed. Congrats on the victory, kid.

tric... I am leaning more and more that way. It is only 5 weight classes...

Ok, I understand the line system that you are using. But, the only thing I dont understand is what lines represent which seeds. I know you're very busy right now. But, if you could enlighten me/rest of us that would be great and very much appreciated.
