Devil's Darby Predictions 2013
-
USMCdevil2005The time has come again for my favorite tournament of the year. Darby is by far the most amazing tournament of the year. I like it even better than the State tournament. Some may call me crazy but there is so much passion and drive in this tournament like no other. I was a D2 boy in my days. D2 district has nothing on this D1 Darby district. This district has the way to my heart for some reason. I started doing this back in 2008 and have done it since. It is just for fun and for conversation starters. So with that said, HERE WE GO!
106
1. Luke Nace - Teays Valley
2. Payton Gutierrez - Pickerington North
3. Shakur Laney - Groveport Madison
4. Jonathon Furnas - Olentangy Liberty
5. Trent Gill - Hilliard Davidson
6. Jackson Lakso - Central Crossing
Luke Nace is 43-1 with his only loss coming to the number 1 guy in the state, Assad of Brecksville Heights. He has beaten Gutierrez 3 times this season and has looked good doing so. I think he wins here. The Pick North sectional was by far the toughest out of the 4. All 4 placers from there are your 4 placers here. Gill has the best shot out of the others but I think will lose to Laney in the go to match. I think Laney gets some revenge on Furnas in their finals match here. Lakso and Gill are my dark horses here.
113
1. Dakota Riley - Mt. Vernon
2. Kyle Dooley - Teays Valley
3. Greg Brusco - Delaware Hayes
4. Josh Transue - Dublin Jerome
5. Santino DiSabato - Westerville North
6. Connor Thomas - Olentangy Liberty
Dakota Riley is definetly above the field here. Has wins over all I do believe. Dooley had a slip up last week on a controversial call against Thomas in the semis at Pick North. The match of the night Friday is Brusco vs. Dooley. Whoever wins will make it to the championship and whoever loses gets 3rd I believe. Should be a great match. I know they are drill partners at the great Jimmy Edwards every week. Thomas and Transue "to Go" match should be a good one. DiSabato could beat Dooley or Brusco in the "go To" but I think it's the other way around. Even though his performance at Medina should have him well prepared for a situatiion like this.
120.
1. Artem Timchenko - Olentangy Orange
2. Josh Wimer - Central Crossing
3. Taleb Rahmani - Marysville
4. Giuseppe Penzone - Olentangy Liberty
5. Sam Valenti - Hilliard Darby
6. Kasey Ackley - Worthington
Timchenko's toughest match over the next two weeks will come against Thompson from Solon, and hopefully on Saturday night at the Schott and not Saturday morning. Wimer is good, but I don't see him beating Artem. I see Penzone losing in the quarters to Rahmani and then beating Valenti to go. I know... I know. Valenti beat him last week. I don't see it happening again. That match will be an all out brawl though and I look forward to it! Ackley is tough, but I think his lack of schedule will have play in his ability here. The other 5 listed are just heads above him.
126.
1. Bobby Smith - Hilliard Davidson
2. Tim Rooney - St. Charles
3. David Sparks - Marysville
4. Brad Kakos - Franklin Heights
5. Andrew Lieb - Watkins Memorial
6. Lucky Shaut - Worthington Kilbourne
The finals match here will be "DYNAMITE"! Could honestly go either way, but I think with Smith having another week to adjust to the weight drop, he will only get better. Rooney is a tough as nails sophmore though. Sparks has been here before and has always came out, like he will here. Kakos has been in this situation and I think changes it from the past and wins his "go to" match against Lieb. Lieb is tough but I think Kakos wants it a little more. I'm pulling for him. Good kid.
132.
1. Kasee McDougle - Gahanna Lincoln
2. Lee Wilson - Hilliard Davidson
3. Lane Hinkle - Mt. Vernon
4. Nick Durieux - Westerville North
5. Dakota Dunn - Teays Valley
6. Ryan McGrath - Hilliard Bradley
McDougle and Wilson will be a great match. I think McDougle gets the edge here. He has been wrestling phenomenal as of late. Lane Hinkle.... is a stud freshman! The kid will be a state champ over the next 4 years, just not this year. He is tough. I was out in the cafeteria at Pick North and saw a mt. vernon wrestler laying flat on a table in the back with a group of folks around him. His legs kicking and you could see he was in pain. I swear it looked like they were giving him stitches right there in the cafeteria. lol! Never seen anything like it at the high school level. Tough Kid! I have Durieux losing to Wilson in the Quarters and battling back. The Dunn Durieux match to go will be awesome. They are both scrappers and tough athletes.
138.
1. Noah Forrider - Marysville
2. Drew McDougle - Gahanna Lincoln
3. Tanner Miller - Lancaster
4. Nick Lawler - Hilliard Davidson
5. Noah Holter - Watkins Memorial
6. Taylor Neely - Upper Arlington
Forrider is on a "Vision Quest", the kid wins a state title this year. McDougle is tough but I think Forrider is just in the zone. Miller loses in the semis to McDougle then battles back and beats Neely to go. The Holter and Lawler match to go will be a great one. Two seniors battling it out for that one last shot to glory. I think Lawler wins. I haven't seen a kid improve this much over a season in a long time! I heard the kid didn't leave the mat all summer and fall! I give him the match here but it could go either way. Hilliards schedule is a little tougher so I think that has play in it.
145.
1. Jake Ryan - Olentangy Liberty
2. Lucas Staten - Mt. vernon
3. Nick Hammond - Canal Winchester
4. Sean Black - Hilliard Darby
5. Cody Pollitt - Olentangy
6. Caleb Llaneza - Westerville South
Jake Ryan is leaps and bounds above the rest of the field here. I have Hammond losing to Llaneza in the quarters then Llaneza losing to Staten in the semis. I think Hammond beats Llaneza to go. It is hard to beat this kid twice, but it has been done. I give Hammond the edge here though. Black loses to Pollitt off the bat but then battles back to beat him to go after Pollitt loses in the semis to Ryan. Black needs to step it up a lot from his performance last weekend. He didn't look like his usual self. I think he does though. Honestly this is probably the best well balanced bracket in the whole tournament. A lot of kids can make it out here, it's all about who shows up that day. My dark horse is Pieczynski from Pickerington Central.
I'll do 152 to HWT after I eat this delicious dinner the wife cooked! Stay tuned folks! -

USMCdevil2005And here is the 2nd half of our broadcast!
152.
1. Nick Lancia - Watkins Memorial
2. Aaron Yarger - Pickerington Central
3. Scott Deluse - Lancaster
4. Anthony Trocchio - Dublin Scioto
5. Zane Chappelear - Grove City
6. Nick Notestine - Pickerington North
Lancia has been wrestling tough as nails lately. Beat Yarger at the Watkins sectional and I think beats him again here. Yarger is second best. Krasovec may give him a tough time in the quarters though. Deluse should be third here, even though he lost to Hinz last weekend. Hinz has really impressed me as a sophmore but I don't think he makes it out here. Deluse has some experience since last year and I think beats him in the big matches. Trocchio looks good but I don't see him getting past Lancia in the semis, he drops down and beat Chappelear to go. Eschleman has an outside chance and so does Notestine.
160.
1. Chase Boyd - Marysville
2. Ethan Bond - Lancaster
3. Markell Wooden - Dublin Coffman
4. A.J. Bondurant - Pickerington Central
5. Danny Watson - Upper Arlington
6. Raymond Simpson - Delaware Hayes
Boyd is looking good and should cruise through the Darby District and win another title. Bond is really 3rd here I think with Wooden ahead of him, but due to bracketing it plays out this way. Bondurant has been wrestling well lately and I think he gets out here for his senior season. Watson has come on strong as of late though and may give some fits to a few guys!
170.
1. Ason Sunkle - Pickerington Central
2. Blake Reid - Upper Arlington
3. Matthew Walker - Hilliard Darby
4. R.J. Funk - Lancaster
5. Alex Roberts - Marysville
6. Jake Stratton - Hilliard Bradley
Sunkle and Walker are 1 and 2 here. Again due to bracketing it plays out this way. I give Sunkle the edge here, it could go either way but whoever wins this one wins the district title. Reid is very tough though and could give either a tough time. I think he beats Funk in the Semis and gets his first birth to the state tournament. He is tough, look at who he rolls around with everyday in the room most likely.... STEVE LUKE! NCAA CHAMP! Come on, that will make anyone that much better. Stratton can turn some heads here too. If he beats Funk in the quarters then he is in. He will lose to Reid in semis and then drop down and beat Roberts to go. If he loses though then he gets cross bracketed and has to wrestle the loser of Sunkle/Walker to go. I don't see him beating either.
182.
1. Nate Hall - Olentangy
2. Andrew Shackelford - Worthington
3. Andrew Sierawski - Delaware Hayes
4. Dylan McDowell - Pickerington Central
5. Trevor Parker - Hilliard Darby
6. Paco Quinonez - West
Hall has looked tough and should beat Shackelford again. Shackelford and Sierawski in the semis should be a good one! I think Sierawski loses a close one then drops down and beats Quinonez to go. McDowell is a strong kid! He came out of the toughest sectional by far. His 4th spot was earned for sure, I give him the edge here and think Jason Allen will have him ready to go!
195.
1. Matthew Lybarger - Mt. Vernon
2. Lenns Kamba - Olentangy Orange
3. Austin Pfarr - Marysville
4. Shawn Johnson - Delaware Hayes
5. Nic Kramer - Westerville North
6. Jordan Reed - Reynoldsburg
Lybarger is above the rest here. I think the kid makes a run for the title this year following in his older brothers foot steps. Pfarr I think is really second best here but will lose to Lybarger in the semis. Kamba is a tough tough kid, but lacks the technique to beat Lybarger I think. The Reed/ Johnson match will be a great one. I give Johnson the edge because of the strength of schedule. Kramer has impressed me as a strong sophmore at a higher weight and could turn some heads here. I don't see him beating Pfarr to go though.
220.
1. Morgan Miller - Marysville
2. Brett Mowery - Dublin Jerome
3. Max Lacey - Canal Winchester
4. Andy Struttman - Westerville North
5. Granyl Smith - Gahanna Lincoln
6. C.J. Kinzer - Teays Valley
This is probably my favorite weight at Darby this year. Like 145 this one is so well balanced every one has a chance! Miller and Mowery are a little above par here than everyone else though. SHould be a great finals match. Smith and Lacey both have wins over Kinzer. Lacey beat Kinzer in OT 2 weeks ago. The Marysville sectional was by far the toughest out fo the 4. Struttman is impressive. I have Lacey beating Smith in the "go to" and Struttman beating Kinzer. Kinzer loses to Mowery in the quarters then drops down and will have to beat the very impressive freshman Crumb to stay alive and get to the "go to" match. Crumb is very good, I look for a few state titles in this kids future honestly!
285.
1. Travis Gusan - Hilliard Davidson
2. Yoshi Akutsu - Dublin Scioto
3. Darius Walker - Marysville
4. Brandyn Darnell - Teays Valley
5. Brooks Gilmore - Worthington
6. Geno Rollo - Pickerington North
Travis Gusan is 42-0 and I think he will end his season as 50-0 and State Champion. He is a monster, I heard he eats baby toes for breakfast and Unicorn meat for dinner. Akutsu is 2nd best here and I think may be second best on saturday night at the Schott! Walker will lose to Akutsu in the quarters and drop down to beat Rollo in the "go to" match. Darnell is looking good and should continue to give these big boys a rough time, they out weigh him by 40-50 pounds. All of his loses come to tough kids. Lost a close one to Jewell from Hamilton Twp who will also qualify this year in D2. I think Darnell loses to the strong Akutsu then beats Gilmore to go. the top 2 are really the only guarentees here. All the rest should shake out something like this though.
Again, I do these for fun. It is a hobby for me. These are merely my opinions and to start conversations. As far as the team race, I think Marysville, Mount Vernon, Pickerington Central, and Hilliard Davidson battle it out. I think Marysville wins with 3 District champs. So with all this being said.... Lets hear the comments and I'll see you all this weekend! Let the FIREWORKS begin! -
USMCdevil2005
I have Llaneza beating Hammond in the first round.. That drops Hammond down to match number 196, wrestling his way all the way back to match 350 to go and facing Llaneza. Llaneza beats Hammond then beats DiBenedetto in the quarters and loses to Staten in the semis, dropping him down to loser N match 350 to go. I shouldn't have said cross bracket. My bad.The2cKDude;1393884 wrote:If llanza and Hamond wrestlenin the quarters they will cross bracket and can't wreztle to go... -

True.....but DD was off a bit on this, as they actually meet in the first round....not the quarters. So a "go to" consi is possible.The2cKDude;1393884 wrote:If llanza and Hamond wrestlenin the quarters they will cross bracket and can't wreztle to go...

Good job. -
Dust_E_RoadsDevil, excellent work. Appreciate you putting all that work into it and getting the conversation started.
Agree on the 220's. I'm looking forward to the second round match between Smith and Crumb (presuming it happens). There is obviously a big age gap between the two, but both are beasts.
If all of your 1 v. 2's play out, we will see some excellent finals. -
Dad4SportsAfter being shut out by "Inside the Circle", some love for the Canal Winchester boys! I just hope they can back you up.....

pulling for hammond to get out at 45, although that's a stacked class and i think he'll need an upset to get it -- i think hammond loses to staten, and then black or the pick central kid (no dis i just can't spell "Pieczynski") will be tough in the go-to match. I don't know what devil's thinking with this weight...pollit is NOT fifth here. i think pollit gives ryan his toughest match of the day in the semis and then comes back to take third. pollit is on a rampage to make up for 2012, and you will see that in all its glory at darby this weekend...Dad4Sports;1394138 wrote:After being shut out by "Inside the Circle", some love for the Canal Winchester boys! definitely think lacey will make it, although seeing that he lost to the olentangy frosh at the sectional has me thinking it's at No. 4. speaking of the crumb kid, call me crazy but i think maybe he's second here. -
pinem07I'd have to agree with you here bump. Hammond is a solid wrestler, but I don't think he gets out here. Ryan easily my 1. Not too familiar with the UA or DJEM kids but there record is pretty impressive. Hammond's conditioning is questionable. He does keep matches close and does well with that style. Pieczynski is tough and would be a hard match to drop down to after losing in the championship bracket. The Pollit-Ryan semi will not be close. Been wrestling together for a while and Ryan catches Pollit when he tries a big move.
If Ryan has a good next two weeks, I wouldn't be suprised if he is at the top of the podium at the Schott. Bright from St. Ed's is a tough kid but if Ryan wrestles his match, its a winnable match. Have watched Jake wrestle the past 4 years and the improvement from year to year is phenomenal!! -

Yea I'm pumped about that one. I haven't seen the crumb kid wrestle yet, but smith is a monster. Pinned kinzer in about 20 seconds.
