Calling all Central Ohio Coaches and Wrestlers
-
huntergreen26The CDWCA has set up a Central Ohio open mat on a weekly basis similar to what Solon does up north. This is an opportunity for our wrestlers to work together and hopefully help to bridge the gap between us and the rest of the state. Please promote this to your wrestlers. I know some clubs will run at the same time and there will be some conflicts, however, this could be a golden opportunity for all involved. I know I will be urging our guys to attend even if they have to miss a night or two of club.
The combined Central Ohio open mats will run every Wednesday from 6:30-8 pm and will rotate schools on a monthly basis. They will start tomorrow night, 3/30 at Hilliard Bradley high school and will stay there the whole month of April The month of May will take place at Big Walnut High School, June will be covered by New Albany.
Solon has 150+ kids on a weekly basis in their room and their results do not lie. Lets all make a commitment to this! -
zambrownSolon's room is truly amazing with the talent there practicing together. This is a great idea and one that I hope Central Ohio wrestlers take advantage of as much as possible!

cruiser_96I've said this before on this forum and I'll say it again...
Having been at both, NEO does have an advantage of colleges and more importantly, college wrestling within driving distance. They want to go somewhere to get a good drill or roll around in. We, in Central Ohio, do not. Ohio Dominican University... you reading this!?!?!? -
Westie101Not sure how i feel about this one.
-
hizzmutherHey Columbus State.. We need a Junior College program in Ohio (and they get 16 scholarships.

I'd love to see this as well. I'll have to check the numbers again but I think CSCC is the second in enrollment for Ohio colleges. Anyone know where to find those stats? -
wildcats1984You will see Newark kids starting next week...spring break this week....
-
Bitterrunner-upHow was the room last night?
-
Lou DemasThey had a really good room last night. And from what I hear, more kids will be coming next week.

I have had a few that want to know who the Hacketts are:
Jason Hackett State Champ at 171 and 3rd 2times and Sr national Champ went to collage at AZ st.
Nick Hackett State Champ at 171 and Runner up went to Collage at Kent St. both are great coachs Hamilton is lucky to have them.
Also I talked to both about changing the day to Monday so we could get more kids and not be the same day as these would there be kids that would come out if we did this? -
charles feuchtCoaches did a nice job at the open mats. Hilliard has a large wrestling room. Thanks again !!!
-
Bitterrunner-upHow were numbers and competition?
-
wildcats1984Are there any free open mats this Sunday in Central Ohio area...
-
charles feuchtGood numbers and fresh faces. I know Lacaster brought some kid's. I hope it gets like Graham "Jordan" open mats. 3 different sets on mats. Youngsters,Lights and Heavy. I know my boy called a couple of friends and they will be there next Wed. The room at Hilliard is huge.
-
Bitterrunner-upAre we talking 30 kids, 50?
-
Ozzie8383Id say around 30, maybe 35. The light weight competition was very good.
-
zambrownWe were at Bradley last night and it was an awesome room. I would guess somewhere around 60 kids from as far away as Lancaster and really all four corners of the OCC. A very good level of competition and great instruction by Coach Riggs. I passed out at least 40 flyers for the Groveport tourney on Friday so hopefully that will be well attended also. I'm hoping Central Ohio is on to something here. Very nice.
-
Bitterrunner-upHere's my issue with this idea. If you're getting 60 kids in its second week, that's awesome. There's no telling how big you could make that room ItT could be a place where Central Ohio wrestlers could go once a week and KNOW they're going to find strong numbers and cometition. Let's say next week you get 75 and then 90 the week after? Then, just as things are starting to roll, you change sites. I understand alternating sites to move things to areas where different kids would be more likely to attend, but by moving the venue, you'll lose kids as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you've got stong numbers and strong competion at one site, keep it there.
If CDWCA wants to start an open mat at another venue, then start one on Thursday (on any other day) and keep a strong room going at Bradley. Just one guy's opinion. -
wildcats1984I know there are a lot of questions on how to run this but I just want to say congrads to the guys who put this together....we had three kids from Newark come over and from what I was told the comp was great...(actually better than what we thought it would be) . I am actually suprises that this idea did surface a long time ago....we all know the only way to get better is to wrestle the best and it seems like that is happening at Bradley....
-
wildcats1984oops did not surface....
-
Bitterrunner-upI want to be clear, I think what's going on at Bradley is great, and I plan on attending. I've been an advocate of a better open mat system in Central Ohio for over a decade now and I think this is a step in the right direction. I just wish Bradley would keep it there and build it even bigger and the CDWCA would expand to another day at another school rather than rotating.
-
wildcats1984Bitter....I understand your point and it does have merit.....everything has a trial and error process....I just wanted to recognize the guys who put this together....in our case coming from Newark our drive is long no matter where we go....
-
DirtyscrambleYah, i say just keep it at bradley
