Officiating in Central Ohio

RefmanWhere to start...hmmm....so many remarks based solely on emotion versus facts or rule.
I will comment on one thing however..and that's the credit that a spring class attendee gets. Again...lets get the FACTS straight.
If you attend my fall class...you attend over 25 hours of class time, coupled with at least 3 preseason tournaments and maybe 2-3 during the season.
If you attend my spring class...you attend over 25 hours of class time, coupled with at least 5 post season tournaments.
It's about mat time....mat time...mat time.
Those of you that HATE referee's will always HATE referees and I can't change that, some one has to win...someone has to lose, someone has to enforce the rules.
I HATE poor officiating at any level. -
1_beastvain, egotistic, arrogant, narcissistic, domineering Refs hurt the image of The Officials as well....just saying

flyfisherIf you thought Columbus east was bad you might have been part of the mob ready to hunt down the refs after 2 days at Claymont Sectional. Sure some bad calls were made at colmbus east, but at least it was not the majority of the calls being bad, some from outta no where.
Like being on top in OT3 and being called for stalling WHILE putting boots in and trying to run half.
I didnt watch every match but i know i saw 4 double stalls at claymont? Didnt notice one at Columbus East. There are some very good officials out there, making very tough split second calls. some you get right some you don't, i can except that. But, unfortunately a hand full of officials seem to believe they should be the focal point of every match, and do so by their bizarre reffing interpretations.
If you have an official that is consistantly bad, to the point of wondering if he is trying to change match outcomes, is there any recourse? I understand everyone has bad days, but after you see official at several events and their calls get worse, can they be reported? Today about every match is videoed by at least 5 different people, is there any way to use these tapes to get officials into some remedial training. And if that doesnt work, can they then be moved to another sport, or retired? Just wondering very frustrating seeing official intentionally change entire flow of match and sometimes seems like even outcome. -
double arm barsRefman we need to use the hydration/bodyfat test on coaches and officials before they can coach or ref.
All the best officials I've seen have all been in shape and able to move(most of them thin).
This has a big impact in later rounds of a tournament in getting into position quicker and keeping emotional edge.
Did you pick up your cardiovascular routine to ref at the College level? Do you cover this and mention this at your classes? -
RefmanDouble Arm Bar....I try and stay in the best shape I can...I do some work yes...but I am on the mat over 50 times in a season....so being active is important.
I do mention to my classes that if yu are overweight....it will hurt you....big time! -
double arm barsYes thats why you have elevated your game and ref in college. Do you call matches differently in college than you do in HS? In particular stalling? Questions not meant to rip on you or anybody else but to help inform.
-
Fab1bHe should call HS and College differently because the rules are different! Remember in college when it comes to stalling first and foremost there is riding time, there is not in HS which will cause a big difference in the top and bottom stalling right off the bat! You can't really compare the two when it comes to rules and officiating. Now I watch alot of NCAA and know alot of NCAA officials and I watch and learn just like I do with any HS official but do have to remember what is good in college might not be good in HS.
Also I like to think I keep in good shape as well, and I am on my officials who are not. Perception is reality in this game!! -
maddog140First its not a game but a sport! Second why should there be different rules in HS vs College?? Are we not the same sport??? why the different rules?? Name another sport that has the same amount of different rules?? What the hell is going on with wrestling??? And we wonder why we cant compete on a world level.........................

Almost every sport you can name has rule differences between high school and college. -
double arm barsThere may be slight differences in the rules but calling stalling on the mat and on the feet should be done the same way at each level. I've looked over the college rule book briefly and the wording is very similar. Spent great deal of time in NE OHIO and Pensy/NJ and east coast and they definitely call it like college. At first I didn't like it but it gives you more time to increase mat skills. More time to coach your wrestler. Refman will try to attend the classes. I'passed the test 25 years ago and I've reffed enough to know its not easy so I respect the refs who hone their craft and take it seriously.

Maximus VictoriusPins and back points were missed the most. Cost kids matches for sure!
I also saw back points counted at 90 degrees. 45 and 90 degrees are a big difference. May need to include a diagram showing what 45 degrees looks like in the officiating book. I agree non wrestlers should not be allowed to officiate. Basic stuff is being missed. I saw an official call stalling on a kid that was on bottom. Top guy had in double boots and a power half the whole period. I would like to put him in that position and see if he can improve. Its called stale mate. -
CthelitesFootball has MANY different rules for HS College and Pro.
Hard to keep it strait. -

This was my biggest issue with the officiating this weekend. -
bigdogdadIf you want quick pins, watch the first two rounds this week. If the ref's sniff a pin it gets called VERY quick. I'm okay with that, but as the rounds progress, you see a definite shift in the way calls are made. Drives me nuts every year. You will also see differences in the way calls are made based on the regions the officials are from. Now some will argue that shouldn't be the case, blah blah blah. But in this case perception is reality. While I'm ranting, if you want to argue stalling. IMO about half the 215 and 73% of the heavy's should get called out on stalling. Nothing like seeing two kids just hugging each other, pretending to do something, until the last 30 seconds of the third period. Then somebody decides it's time to wrestle.

Refmandouble arm bars...I do call things different in college, than high school.
As Fab1b stated....because there is riding time, that is taken into consideration. Also...I allow a lot more "physicality" than I do in high school. Falls are different...2 seconds compared to 1 second. Fleeing is different and the out of bounds is very different. -

"Physicality" thats the problem with central ohio.. kids from the northeast go all year long being physical and when March 5th comes they are more use to it...and take more bling home.....................Refman ever do a Firestone league tournament??The golden triangle.Cleveland,Akron,Warren, back to Cleveland..alot of grinding going on.......Maybe we need more Blue Collar Refs around Central Ohio
