DI: Central District Rankings - Team and Individual (1/03)

  • cruiser_96
Here is what I sent to the coaches, and just now, to the Columbus Dispatch. I am now creating the new thread for the rankings. There is a very good chance I missed a name or two, and when you only have 3 or 4 minutes between classes, there is a chance that even some of the coaches missed a name or two. Some teams and their line-ups are still mysteries to me, but this should at least get the ball rolling.

I might add a few names to the end of this list to show some depth. Whatever, dude.

145:1. Delande (Davidson), 2. Snyder (Liberty), 3. Toprani (Orange).
152:1. Thomas (Liberty), 2. Mickley (Davidson), 3. Kowaleski (Grove City).
160:1. Pickett (Central Crossing), 2. Brown (Westerville Central), 3. Kaczkowski (Liberty).
171:1. Bowens (Darby), 2. Montgomery (Mt. Vernon), 3. Hughes (Grove City).
189:1. Brown (Gahanna), 2. Leidecker (Teays Valley), 3. Archer (Liberty).
215:1. Odierno (New Albany), 2. King (Scioto), 3. Knoch (Davidson).
285:1. El-Geroushi (Darby), 2. Elflein (Pickerington North), 3. Fleming (Liberty).

    Thanks for the poll Cruiser!

Looking at Ryan(OL), you have him at 125.
Is that right? I thought he alpha tested at 130??? Michael and Boone had been going at 25 with the wrestle off loser going 35 so far this yr.
Also watchout their Frosh Penzone(OL) placed 7th at Brecksville losing to the Champ and 3rd placer, I think he could beat Pauley(MV) but I'm sure total body of work played into it right(Sr/Fr).
And while I'm on it, no love for Longwell? He did beat Strope in the go to at District last yr(could have a tilt this week at the Bradley Porter Mem) and lost a close one to Smoot in his first action of the yr for his only loss outside of the MIT(Fiorucci and Goebel) this yr.
Id also prolly put Nace(TV) 130 ahead of Boone(OL) or Ryan(OL) depending on where they end up.

Not criticizing just adding some thoughts for conversation.
I know its just the first one so alot of things can change in the next few weeks.

140 from Marion Franklin is pretty good.....Hysell 152 Central Crossing will make 94's poll soon!

    Excellent point concerning Longwell.

As for the Liberty situation @ 125 and 130... I TOTALLY botched that one. Coach Marinelli just sent me an email concerning that too. Chalk this as evidence to my idiocy! I'll make the changes...

And in my response to him, I said I'd love to see the rematch between Nace and Ryan. It happened at New Albany. I was prepping my camera as those two stepped on the mat so - since I didn't get the first half of the period - I chose not to record any of it. MISTAKE!!! An overtime or two later, I was dreading my decision.

94 doesn't know how to type!

Also, I thought about MF's 140... Didn't he win the Ready Winter Classic??? If not, I'm pretty sure he was a finalist. Anywho, my thought process was, Gill was a state qualifier last year, so...

Did Nace and Ryan wrestle this season....or was this last year. Who won?

I agree that Longwell should be ahead of Strope at this time. He did beat him at districts. They could meet this weekend at Bradley. IMO, DiSabato, Hunter, Longwell then Strope until head to head results dictate otherwise. Strope is scheduled to see all 3 in the next few weeks.

Also, at 125 Davis from Lancaster beat Haslam 5-0 in the finals at Mt. Vernon. Davis' lone loss was to Anthony of Liberty in overtime at Liberty. As info only.

    That looks right for now.

I guess it depends on how you rank. If it's just on past results, then Longwell's the guy. But if you do it on who you think is the better wrestler, then I think you have to go with Strope. Longwell is a solid wrestler, but he caught Strope at the perfect time last year at Districts. Strope had clearly not recovered from the loss to Timchenko in the semis and wrestled about as poorly has I've ever seen him. Longwell showed up and wrestled well and deseved the victory, but I don't think he's the better wrestler.

No love for any Worthington wrestler! OUCH!

Longwell also got hosed on a terrible call against McDougal at District. He did have more time to recover though.
Not saying Strope isnt better but the last time they met with the State on the line Longwell won 5-0.
That's got to count for something at least until they go again.

Boone must have won the last wrestle off? He was at 125 for Brecksville, while Michael was at 135. It will be interesting to see how those 2 go back and forth the rest of the way.....

I'm up for whatever. Throw some names with weights out...

I would have it 1.Smoot(TV), 2.Boone(OL), and 3.Davis(L) at 125. I agree with rassler about 119, although strope will prove himself soon...

Don't think there will be much back and forth. Boone won the wrestle off and was also state alternate last year. He is a better wrestler. Got screwed at Brecksville on a stalling call and lost by one or would have placed at least 4th at B'ville.

    Shackelford TWHS 171
    Coleman TWHS 145 / 140

    i would put Ouzts(WN) somewhere at 130.

Didnt Michael win the first wrestle off?
Are you assuming he beats Smoot AND Wilson on his way to 4th on the other side of the bracket?

Is Jason Allen (TW) wrestling at Desales this year? If so, not sure how I missed that one. On another issue...which of the Bowens, Mongomery and Hughes trio does Shakelford beat? Bowens SQ, Mongomery won 2 bouts at District and Hughes is a 2x DQ. No disprespect to the kid. To make it to Districts as a freshman at 189 is impressive. I just dont see him beating any of those three. Now if any of them drop to 160 then I think he has a real strong case.

"I'm up for whatever. Throw some names with weights out... "

Interesting quandary. I'm JUST a dad so I am not privy to who, if anyone, either Worthington coach submitted. Maybe they didn't submit any wrestler? Maybe on purpose? Maybe an oversight? In addition to those Worthington wrestlers already named, I can think of 4 who deserve at least some consideration for top 3 status even if others disagree. However, I don't want to trump either coach by listing kids if they purposefully chose not to. I guess we'll know more after Thursday, maybe I am just a homer or maybe some Worthington kids will be more competitive than the initial top 3 would indicate, especially against Davidson.

From what Cruiser has written in the past, I may be wrong, but I don't think that coaches actually "submit" anyone. Crusier.....when you get a few minutes, maybe you could review the process that you follow?

Good idea, I thought it was along the lines of the All-Star meet selection process. Would be interesting to know the criteria.

    No prob.

I do a fair amount of research for results and weight classes, to include last year's results. Sometimes I branch out to common opponents. Then, I compile a list of about five or six names and try to rank them #1 through #3. I then submit that list, via email, to all the coaches on my list (which currently does not include Thomas Worthington). After the coaches have look at it, they let me know their thoughts.

Ex: Upper Arlington's 140 is not on my radar... (No offense to whomever that may be.) However, to make a point, I bet Coach McComick knows who he is, and if he deems Mr. 140 pounder as a top wrestler in the area, that might be a weight class he looks at. If the 2nd or 3rd best kid was outplaced by his kid, then he will know that and bring it to my attention. Conversely, if he thinks his 140 pounder still has a little way to go, he may just state that everything looks fine, even though he knew to pay attention to that weight class.

One point of note: I do miss things. One year, Jake McCombs was left off the list. How does that happen, you ask. I have no clue. But it did. It's an honest mistake. Most recently, I missed a head-to-head result of two ranked wrestlers. A coach caught it and let me know.

That's pretty much it. ...I guess.
