Your realistic "dream" job...

Forget your dreams of playing on the PGA Tour, or playing for your favorite professional sports team.

If you could pick a dream career that would actually be attainable, what would it be?

I would be the owner/operator of a nano brewery. Give me a 2-3 barrel system, no (or extremely limited) distribution, and I'd be content to brew, drink, and talk about beer for the rest of my days.

  • Owner of a fabric or clothing company. I'm very into Technical fabrics with stretch and other properties such as moisture wicking or odor control. But it's very challenging to find clothes that have tech properties but dont look like ass.

Do what I do now (engineer systems for industrial furnaces to help the producers lower their emissions) but on my own/work for myself as a small LLC/consulting "firm".

Teach engineering or mathematics at a university. I enjoyed teaching while I was working on my masters degree, but don't want to have to deal with parents (high school).

Already did it. Wanted to be a pro wrestler as a kid and ended up doing it for 7 years.

A few other options:

  1. Small-scale farmer - I'd enjoy having a small farm, 25-50 acres, and raise chickens, hogs, and a few head of cattle, as well as a large garden and sell the eggs, meat, and produce at various farmers markets.
  2. Author - I would also enjoy living in a small cabin on a lake in some semi-remote town, writing the next great novel.
  3. Audiobook narrator - If I could get paid to read all day I'd be pretty damn happy.

Pilot.  I am happy with that I do, but I regret not pursuing universities with great aviation schools.

That dream is within reach.  Just send your demos to ACX.com and other audiobook sites, and start auditioning.  You do need a home studio (or access to a studio) with a very low noise floor.  I know quite a few voice actors in the central Ohio area who do audiobooks and generate income that way.  One lady I know who just got into voiceover last year now has a deal to voice over 30 titles for just one romance author.

I thought you didn't like to fly? Or I am mixing you up with another poster.

I know you've sent me information on this in the past, I think through PM on the old version of the site. I appreciate the info, I was looking at acx.com for a while and it seems like a nice platform. The studio piece would be the hardest for me.

Have a few, but the most realistic at the moment is a full time DJ. It's tough here though, very saturated.
