spam callers

Anyone else getting these?  The new thing is they are spoofing numbers very close to your own (same area code and first 2-3 of your number).  So it's always changing and there's nothing you can do to block it.

I'm now getting 2-3 of these a day.  I never answer, so you think they'd stop.  This has been going on for over a month now.

my wife gets these daily as well, but I've never gotten one--we both have the same provider, same phone number exchange, same data plan...go figure

I get them. Usually when you answer, there's an option to be removed from their list. Seems to work.

That goes against everything I've ever read.  Maybe it works for more traditional spam, but probably not for robocallers spoofing local numbers.

I see there are a few apps that may work.  Otherwise the nuclear option appears to be "do not disturb (except for numbers in your address book)" - unfortunately problematic for work calls if you don't have a good address book you can download with everyone's number.

So most of these calls are coming to my google voice number, I think.  Just realized I didn't have "automatically filter spam" checked, so we'll see how that goes.

Been getting them for over a year, maybe close to 2. Obnoxious. But I’ve stopped answering anything that isn’t a name in my contact.

I'm retired so I have time to fuck with them.

Local call coming in, I answer and ask how the weather is in my home town.

Click.

^^^^Now this is on my land line.

On my cell, if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer and then block that call. That works.

Until the next new number.

These people are relentless.

I get a couple per week on my cell; almost all are recordings.  I did get one last week that was live; I said where are you located, she said Jacksonville; I said your number is a Cleveland area code; she tried to make some excuse; I said f off.

I get them daily, sucks because my personal phone is my work phone, so I have to answer. The do not call list shit does not work.

I get them quite often and usually stay on long enough to get as much info that I can. Then I report them to the do not call registry. Not sure if this helps at all but figured I would do something to help make them stop. I also have called my local congressmen/women and asked for them them to make legislation to try and stop this crap. If I have spare time I will mess with them and try to sell them used condoms or something along those lines.

I envy those of you getting only 2 calls per day.  I get so many I either just let it ring, or like some of you, engage in a little time-wasting for fun.

The sophistication of some of these calls is uncanny.  If I answer with a big "Hi, you've reached Zunardo!  How y'all doing?", the computer invariable hangs up on me.  If I want to speak with someone, I'll say "Hello?  Hello? - and either hear a recording (I hang up), or get someone with a furrin accent I can have fun with.

And some of these shady organizations raising funds for veterans and such are using pretty sophisticated computer apps that are programmed to spit back a recorded human voice saying various things.  One had me fooled for about 10 seconds, then it dawned on me it was a computer, so I questioned it and it said, "Oh, yes - I'm a real person.  NOT a computer".   I kept saying, "Now, you're just joshing me - you're not real".  And it kept repeating the same recording, over and over.  Funny, but also a little spooky.

Any number I don't recognize and doesn't leave a voicemail or text I'll block. That actually helps because a lot of times I get multiple calls from the same number.

Ironic that this link has a stupid spam advertisement on the top of the page.

Since I installed TruCaller, not a single spam call in 4 days.  Although I can't see where it's blocked any, but that's because it rejects automatically and I set it not to notify me.

That's what I normally do.  I search the number, and if it's known spam I block it immediately.  If not, I'll block it if they call me a few more times.  Oddly enough, I discovered a few of these to be Verizon, Comcast or customer service survey for something I just dealt with.

But the problem with these new callers is they spoof numbers, so you're approach doesn't work because the number changes every time.

found these tips:

I installed TrueCaller and see how that goes.  I also need to enable Verizon spam protection, which is apparently free.  Not sure either option is going to stop the spam that's getting thru my google voice account.

Installed TrueCaller on Friday, got two spam calls today.

Good to know.  I'm not sure if anything can block the spoofers.  It will probably take an act of Congress to get the landline, cellular and VoIP carriers to install technology to block or identify spoofing.

I’ll go days/weeks at a time without receiving any. Then over a few day span I’ll have 9-10.

The last one I had was last Tuesday. Same number the 3rd time that day. I engaged for a bit before telling them if they called back I would take legal action, as it was the 4th time I’ve asked not to be contacted.

I of course had no plans for this, and not sure I even had grounds to take any action even if I wanted. But it was pretty funny to listen to this guy stumble through an explanation and apologize thinking he was gonna get whoever he was working for busted lol.

Got one today.

Might look at basically blocking the 10,000 numbers that have the same first 6 digits as me.  You can do this with TruCaller.
