Our son who’s had to start the year virtual and had it rough as any 7 year old trying to learn on the computer has finished the first 9 weeks with being recommended to be put in the accelerated program. He’s an ambitious and competitive kid and will spend hours trying to get perfect on his xtra math practices and such.  He’s very dedicated in both school and sports and I’m proud of him.

One of my sons has fairly severe adolescent depression and anxiety.

He had two times last school year that he wanted to kill himself. He didn’t have an actual suicide attempt, but only because we got to him in time.

He has turned himself around. He stopped trying to self medicate with drugs and started taking his doctor prescribed medicine and attending therapy.

He is doing so well right now compared to last year. His grades are up 2 letter grades or more from last year. He is in a good place mentally and is actually looking forward to things like wrestling season, driving school, getting a part time job, what he wants to do after school as a job, etc.

Last year he didn’t look forward to anything.

I am so proud of him.

One time a long time ago, I went 5 for 5 with two homers over the fence in a win over the best team in the county.

This sounds a lot like my cousin. Such a smart kid but people don’t understand the hardship they face. He’s got it under control now and back on track. I’m glad to hear your son is too.

Thanks, he was an A and B student before this started. Dropped to straight Fs for awhile. I literally had the conversation with all of his teachers at one point face to face basically saying “my kids have known that their order of importance is God, family, and school. School has always been one of the most important things in their lives. It’s important to me with my background. With all that said I don’t give two craps about his grades right now, my goal is to make sure he is still alive a few months from now.”

That was a near impossible thing to realize I was saying at the time. That was our reality at the time that his teachers called an all teacher at once conference meeting.

He has his emotional ups and downs still but they are more “normal” ups and downs not the huge swings from just 7-8 months ago.

Got a promotion last Friday.

Also the approval to hire someone under me and build out a team. I'm more hyped about that than the pay bump.

Nice.

I started a new position/promotion when I started with this company a year and a half ago. I am now doing pre-engineering (helping salesmen/sales women get it right in the first place) all the way through commissioning now. I had never really helped much in sales.

With the promotion came a bonus structure that I have yearly goals in how much in $ I help the sales team land.

Even with COVID recession I hit my number for the whole year back in July, almost doubled it by the end of the year.

Good news is my bonus isn't capped if I hit my goal, it keeps going up with whatever I continue to do/help sell.

Also, my goal for next year is already about 30% done and next year obviously hasn't even started yet.

Jmog, how much do you think your son has been affected because of Social Media?

My cousin is 27 now, and was by far the youngest of that side of the family, but she went through a similar thing right around the time of social media starting up in grade school. My uncle lost $700k of his life savings getting her treatment and help, but it took 10+ years for her to kinda snap out of it. She is still depressed at times, but much better. No longer malnourished (though the effects of years of it are still seen).

Anyway, the original point is she was a perfectly happy kid until one day on her social media account she was bullied and called fat, etc. It’s sad, scary, awful, all those things. I’m terrified for my own kids growing up in these times.

As for a brag...

  • I’ve worked 3 Super Bowls and received a national sports Emmy for one of them.
  • Have held all the major sports trophies
  • Played, and lost, to LeBron James at horse at this years ASG in Chicago. It was HORSE to _____. I was proud it took him 9 shots to beat me though lol!
  • Walked the Red Carpet at the 2018 Oscars
  • Hit tennis balls with Martina Hingis in 2001

I’ve lost 53 lbs and my A1C down to 5.1.

My son scored very good on his first ACT this summer.

My cervical dystonia issues have been significantly eliminated and I have my life back after nearly a year of being able to hardly do anything.

Anything specific you’ve done to lose the weight?

I cut back a lot on sugars and portioned much better. Drank nothing but water (at least 98% of the time)....ate anything but definitely in moderation. That cut me down 20 but in late May my neck was fixed and I’ve not sat down much since. I’m wearing out shoes like crazy...walking, jogging....just about and all over the place. Spent 7 months mostly confined to the chair and it scared me pretty good.

I’m definitely a new man now...and thankful for great medicine and science.
