Very random occurrences going on with my parent's household.

They just sold the house I grew up in on Monday in SE Ohio. It's been in my dad's family since the 20s. They've always floated the idea to downsize and get a place in Colorado and it's finally happening. They have several rental properties, so they'll keep a 1BR for themselves when they post up in Ohio. 

A guy I grew up with caught wind that they would potentially sell (he lives in Cbus, wants to move back home to be close to family, he just had a kid.) He reached out directly to my dad, said he was interested. Viewed the place on Saturday, talked numbers and the deal is done. 

I'm rather shocked. I assumed this was going to happen in a few years, but now they want to be out by November 1st! I have to go back in a few weeks and go through my childhood belongings. 

I'm happy for them, but somewhat sad. That house is all I know. It's old school, but very nice. 2car, two floor, detached garage. Large above ground redneck pool, awesome mancave with bar. Now that to a 1br apartment. Holidays will be different.

Just thought I'd share. Weird, surreal feeling.

Yeah, I'm sure that is an odd feeling. I kinda get the going through old stuff feeling. My parents downsized last year. They moved a few miles away to a smaller space, all one level. They are still in Ohio at least.  But, over Thanksgiving, my parents asked me to clean out a bunch of my old things that were still in the basement. It took a good few hours. 

I'm actually starting the homecoming process now, moving from Maryland back to the Columbus area. I am communicating with realtors now. Thing is, the market is so hot in Cbus right now, it may take a good number of trips back and forth before we can close on a place as it is better to do it all in person than virtual. Wife and I are hoping the market starts to slow down closer to the holidays. The goal is to move back by the latest Feb of next year. 

I live away from Ohio and the house I grew up in.  I understand your sentiment.  I sometimes think of a book written by a famous American author Thomas Wolfe called You Can't Go Home Again.  In it the main character expounds on what that means... "You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, back home to the young man's dreams of glory and fame, back home the places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time - back home to the escapes of Time and Memory."

My mom and stepdad are still in Ohio, but moved away from my hometown when I was 21. It's definitely weird going back to see friends or other relatives and your home not being there. The more time that goes by, the more I feel like an outsider when I visit.

Like what will I do with all of my little league trophies that are STILL on display? lol

I'll still be going back regularly. I have a lot of family there, but a lot are getting up there in age.

My mom has one large Rubbermaid container for each of her five kids that store all of our childhood mementos. She has moved them three times now. She keeps telling us to come get them out of her storage room and we just keep not doing it. 😂 

Our family will always keep the houses and property "back home." I haven't lived at home, other than summers, since 2003 when I moved out at 17 and went to college. Since 2008, I think the longest I've been "home" at one time is a week.

The majority of my family is there. My mom and dad downsized around 3 years ago, but it was just at a house that connected properties they owned and was 1/4 mile away from the house I grew up in -- where my brother and family live now.

Not sure I'll ever really go back, although there is a job that just came open that I have inquired about AND was mentioned to my by 4 other people when it came open. It has to make sense to take it. Not sure what that would be, but I typically know it when I get into the process.
