OC Mount Rushmore: Dumb Takes

These can be specific of general takes.  Keep politics out.

- "College players care more about the game and play harder than pros."  Never understood this take.  Anyone who have watched players win titles (or even just playoff games) would immediately realize this is bullshit.

-Non saying pittsburgh fans are more knowedable about sports, because their team wins more.

-"You have to play in a big market."  This is such outdated bullshit.  Just look at the Cavs providing all time finals ratings (yes, a good portion of those ratings came from Ohio) and it will immediately show you how dumb this argument is.  With internet/social media, there is no longer a need to play in a big market for your brand.

-Anyone who thinks drafting a RB in the first round is a good idea.

I have a feeling I will want to amend my Mt Rushmore, when other terrible takes come to mind.

"It's not lebron's fault that he left cleveland, they couldn't put a supporting cast around him" - I want to sucker punch everyone who says this. Team won 66 games - Lebron NEVER helped with recruitment during his first stint, and was always wishy washy on staying.

That one always kills me.

Best college football team would beat the worst NFL team. No. No they wouldn't. I remember that being a topic of discussion in the past.

Thought this would be personal dumb takes. So I’ll go with my top 4 (that I can remember):

  1. Brady Quinn will be HoFer (my solace here is I was happy they went Thomas at 3)
  2. Jurgen Klinsmann will take the USA to the semifinals of WC within the next 4 cycles.
  3. Ricky Rubio over Steph (not down on Steph in draft, just that high on Rubio.
  4. Peyton Manning will end up with more SB than Brady (after Peyton finally got his first one...thought he’d go on a run since the monkey was off his back)

Every 4 years during the women's WC.

They absolutely do.

Here's a hottaek that really rustles my jimmies:

IF DRAYMOND GREEN WASNT SUSPENDED GSW WOULD HAVE WON IN 2016!!!1111

First off, nope. 2nd, Cavs were without Kevin Love for a few games in that series too fuckboi. WHY AREN'T YOU MENTIONING THAT!

Another dumb piece that I hear all the time:

"X player (it's usually a superstar too like LBJ, or OBJ in NFL) couldn't play in the X sport X number of years ago. It was a tougher game then."

Yeah, sure thing fuckface, whatever makes you feel better about yourself. LBJ would butt fuck your bitchboy on his way to 10 straight championships against Bill Russell or Larry Bird. Calvin  Johnson or OBJ would make LOUIS WRIGHT fucking retire by halftime.

I'd give Chiefy Jones from the HS football forum honorable mention for his idol worship of Massillon FB.  A lot of people think he's a troll and I'm sure that's likely the case.  But he has too many facts about Massillon football for it to be all a put on.

I also beleive Isadore and Sleeper were one in the same.  In fact, I thought Sleeper did a poor job of concealing it.

This X1000000000. The people who pull this shit are so full of shit.  I'd like to add the fact that Draymond wasn't going to stop Lebron or Kyrie from owning them that game.  They were on a mission and each dropped 40.   The game 7 block/shot overshadows game 5, but it honestly might be a top 3 legacy moment for Kyrie and at least top 10 for Lebron.

Also, the same people who say this shit were pretty silent when Love and Kyrie were out out the 2015 finals.  A more realistic hot take is Steph*/Klay*/Draymond* have yet to win a title vs a healthy team or KD saving them.

I second this.  I am sure there are drivers who work out hard and have good diets, but that would make any meathead at the gym an athlete as well. NASCAR drivers just happen to work out and be very skillful drivers.

This argument can apply to any sport.  "Serena could compete with the men."  No, no she couldn't.  She even says so herself.

I'm not so sure she couldn't hold her own against some of the lower tier players, and let's not forget about sports such as bowling, billiards, etc.-- just saying it doesn't necessarily apply to any sport.

I don't consider those sports lol.

Also, I can't find it, but there was an interview where Serena herself said she couldn't hang.  She also played the #203 player in the world in 1998 and got her ass handed to her.  Granted, that was 1 year before she started winning slams, but you get the point.  I think it's a safe bet she isn't making the top 150, which means she most likely isn't playing in these slams.

He had also just golfed 18 and had been drinking. She couldn't beat anyone in the top 200. I don't know why people just can't accept in real athletics, there is no comparison, and it's not a bad thing. Contrary to some of the popular beliefs in this country, gender is a thing.

"Braasch would smoke cigarettes and sip beer during the changeovers, and to be honest no longer looked the part of a fit professional athlete. It made no matter. Braasch led 5-0 over Serena before winning the set 6-1, and then posted a 6-2 set victory over Venus."

I'd like to see her play the guy ranked 203 right now just for grins...

"The year was 1998 and they were quite self-assured young ladies of the teen variety. What was more intriguing at that particular Australian Open was that the two siblings had something of an inflated understanding of their abilities, developed from their being fresh-faced, and still in need of a few life lessons learned..."

I'd like to see it too. I wonder if any men would step up for an exhibition with some of the top ranked women. It would be cool to see.

They’d get wrecked. Serena’s first serve is solid, but it isn’t placed as well as men. Plus, she wouldn’t be used to it coming back at her in non attacking positions. I watch a lot of tennis, and the women just couldn’t do it versus the men in the top 150 or so.

She doesn’t move anywhere close to any male tennis player, like, it’s sinply not close.

lol...I've not only watched a lot of tennis, I've played (and coached) a lot of tennis too, and this statement is just plain ignorant. I'm not saying she'd beat any male player ranked in the top 150, but to say it's "sinply (sic) not close" and (love this one) "she wouldn’t be used to it coming back at her in non attacking positions" just shows you haven't a clue as to the intricacies of the game.

Simply couldn’t disagree more. Combine her serve and someone like Haleps movement on the court and I’d be more inclined to think they could compete. But still very doubtful.

Ok, had to do some research to see what exactly we are looking at with men’s top 150 vs Serena.

The most important part of the game is the serve. You control the point from the start and it’s typically the best weapon anyone has even on a bad day. Serena’s average first serve is 105. The average first serve of the 150th ranked male, Oscar Otte? 118. He recently lost to Federer in the French 4-6, 3-6, 4-6. In other words...these guys fighting to make the Grand Slams are fucking good. The biggest thing here isn’t that Serena is 13MPH below her theoretical opponent, it’s that she is used to returning serves below 100mph, as the average women don’t get above that. So it’s now a 20mph difference. While the men are routinely used to these serves, and men who serve at 105 on average are broken at around 32% of the time...a lot.

Second is reaction time. Both on return of serve and ground strokes. Serena has a very respectable reaction time of .68. Nick Kyrigos leads the men at .61 (his peak ranking I think was 13). Average for men is .66, still ahead of Serna.

Third is you’re speed. Both top speed and average top speed. Top is the highest sprint speed, average top is any shot you had to run more than 10’ to get to averaged. Simona Halep (since I used her last post) is actually the best on the women’s tour at 14mph...8.5 average. Serena is 12.7 and 8.3 respectively. I can’t find sprint speeds for the average tour player, but Federer is the lowest I can find (17th), and he is at 16.2 and 9.6 respectively. It’s safe to assume the 150th ranked player will still be well ahead of Serena in speed, and as mentioned is ahead in reaction time. So they will consistently be in position to hit a non defensive shot, whereas Serena wouldn’t be.

Less important is groundstroke speed, as serves dictate who is controlling points. But in the case if a cross gender game, this becomes vital. Men have quicker reaction time and are faster. They are typically in position to hit the next shot from a set position vs on the run. Couple that with the ball not coming as hard, and then them hitting it back harder? But for purposes, Serena has an average Forehand speed of 72.6mph. Better than a grand total of 6 players at this year’s Men’s Australian Open. With the average being around 78mph.

Lastly is shot placement. Men clear the net by an average of 7.9 inches and women at close to a foot. Men also hit it closer to the lines, but more importantly they hit it deeper in the court putting opponent further back/defensive. By an average of 9 inches more than the women.

To sum it all up...she stands no chance. The men are stronger, faster, quicker, react faster, hit it harder, hit it with more placement and purpose. It’s hard to see what part of Serena’s game would be good enough to take more than 1-2 games off a men’s player in the top 150.

I would be intrigued to see where Serena at her peak would be on the men's tour.  Guessing near 500-800?
