Making fun of friends' grammar

A couple that my wife and I are friends with make wall-hanging art pieces.  When we found out we were pregnant, they made us a custom one.  It was very nice -- very thoughtful.  We did appreciate it.

However, the piece says that we're so grateful for what God "have gave" us.

Every time I see it, I poke at it, saying something like, "God sure do done did gaven her to us."

This usually evokes a response like, "You're such an asshole."

Is that an asshole thing to do, or is it innocent and harmless?

Missing some context here.  Is there response more of a legitimate "you're an asshole" or a "haha you're an asshole dude?"  Regardless, you're just busting bulls.  If they are legitmately offended, then they are probably easily butt hurt.

It's a legitimate "You're an asshole."  She genuinely doesn't like when I say it.

They're not around to hear it, so they can't get offended one way or the other, but I suppose they might be if they heard me saying it.  I don't know.  To me, it doesn't matter.

The husband is not very educated.  I mean, he doesn't speak that poorly, but it's not the first time I've seen something he wrote that made mistakes like that.

Asshole or not, it's funny as hell. That you apparently know CC and procure art off him, that is.

If they aren't around I would say the same stuff when only my wife can hear it...so I say harmless.

I guess I misread your post.  So your wife is calling you the asshole.  If this were my wife, I would tell her to loosen up.

In so many words, I have.  Doesn't really help, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't actually coming across as a Grade-A asshole for this.

For other shit, whatever.  Just not for this.

You'd think if you were going to give someone a gift intended to be hung on the wall for everyone to see that the grammar would be correct. I'd probably tell them thanks but I don't want to look at this hick-ass sign every day.

Poor grammar is cringe-worthy to me.  If I find out that I have made a grammatical error, and I have done so publicly, I feel humiliated.  I know that most people don't ever recognize, but I feel that poor spelling and grammar are a reflection of 1) one's education 2) one's professionalism 3) one's attention to NOT sounding like an idiot.  It's rather pretentious, but I hate poor grammar.

It is extremely embarrassing in a professional environment imo. When I see cc and gblock's posts, I just hope for their sake their emails at work are much tighter.

lol, that's why I am not picky about the posts on this site.  I normally post and then catch my mistakes later.  I had a different sentence brewing and forgot to delete one word. At work I am rereading my emails/documents at least a few times before sending them out.

Anyway, you're an asshole /otrapswife.

That's a tough one. Because I see her point. You're being an asshole to your friends behind their back. But I also couldn't look at that every day and not make fun of it. I don't know if I could have that in my house either because you know other people are going to see it too. And if you take it down then you risk having them ask you where it went.

I tend to only make fun of someone's grammar if I think they should know better. I have many foreign friends and I won't mock their inability to speak english until I speak more languages than they do. I have lots of poorer/uneducated friends and family. I don't think they know any better and they don't want me to teach them.

My grammar isn't 100% all of the time, so there's that too.
