I finally took the plunge and deleted the time-wasting cesspool that is facebook. I've been considering it for a while, but kept it around for whatever reason. I did download all of my data, which ended up being a ~270MB zip file. If that were the average amount of data on each active user, that's 602 petabytes of data. A petabye is a million gigabytes. Going off of google's storage pricing (https://cloud.google.com/storage/archival/) that would be $4.2 million per month just in storage fees. I'm guessing I'd have far less data than the average user as I haven't post much over the last several years, so that number could be way higher. That's an f-ton of data.
All that aside, if you've ever considered getting rid of facebook, I'd definitely recommend it.

I'd probably never get rid of it just because it serves a purpose of long-distance communication. My son was born a few weeks ago and I was easily able to update my cousins/aunts/uncles spread across the country the details of it.
I don't let it aggravate me. Someone's consistently irritating? Hidden from newsfeed. I only post something (usually related to my kids) once or twice a month.
I'll never, ever understand people that get on there and just argue (sometimes with complete strangers) about shit endlessly. That's a huge mystery to me.

I don't exactly remember when I walked away from FB, but I fucking hate the place. I reactivated last spring to promote a basketball tournament I was putting on, but immediately deactivated once promotion was over. So, for that, it served a small purpose.
What is this downloading of data? Do you remove it from their servers? Do you trust that this actually happens?

Tried to delete fb yrs ago, but then I couldn't use Spotify. Tried to delink spotify from FB and there is no way to do so. Thus I still have FB due to fucking spotify, I'm still pissed at that decision to set up Spotify via FB.

Facebook is what you make of it. Hope this helps.
This is certainly true. So I made it go away.

I deleted the app off my phone because it was using 3 GB of my storage. I occasionally get on through my web browser but I never scroll the feed. Just clear out my notifications and get back out. Spend less than 10 minutes per week.

I'll never get rid of it either because it serves a purpose for me, and that is being able to not only keep it constant contact with family and close friends, but to watch long distance nieces and nephews as they grow up. However, what I did do was to do a Facebook "cleanse" and unfriend two thirds of those on my friends list, and what a difference that made. It not only got rid of most of the bullshit and clutter, but allowed me to see only the posts I wanted to see.

Facebook is a hellsite and I fucking hate it. I look at it frequently, but I only post something once a month at most.

That's fine. Like you, I have family and close friends all over the US and I like to keep up with them on the hellsite known as Facebook. I also have a very active friend group and a lot of our activities are planned using the event tool.
That doesn't change the fact that Facebook still sucks.
I guess we interpret our facts and what sucks a little differently then...carry on.

I have never had a Facebook account or any other social media bs. What a crock.
Arguably, sites like this one qualify as "social media".
