Saw this tweet and thought there's no way. Then I read the comments. I am apparently in the minority as a millennial in that I do not turn on subtitles (unless it's foreign language).

I do, but very rarely am I watching anything alone quietly. My kids are usually nearby being loud or something.

I won’t have them on for sports.

I turned them on regularly if I am doing work on the computer or surf the Internet. The sound is sometimes too distracting when I’m trying to get something done and it helps me concentrate if the noise of the TV isn’t up all the time in fact, I have one TV that is constantly on ESPN channel and it ever changes. I turn on the TV sound and turn the subtitles off if I’m just sitting down and watching TV

Only for Michael Mann movies (kidding).

But no. Closest I have done is turned them in and rewound a conversation I couldn’t make out.

I normally do. I digest the content way better when subs are on. It is especially helpful for names.

I am too old to be a millennial but I do have them on at times.

Mainly because I have some hearing loss from working in industry around loud industrial furnace equipment for decades.

My main loss is if anything or anyone else in the area is talking/making noise I can’t make out what the TV is saying. I can’t concentrate on any one “sound” in the room.

I have them on. Have a 6 and a 4 year old so it’s usually loud in the background and captions help. I don’t usually read the captions but it’s always there.

Cable TV, no. It's laggy.

Anything streaming....movies or a series. Yes, 100% of the time.

I actually prefer subtitles because I dont hear that well, especially british or foreign shows,  but my wife absolutely hates them and does not allow them when she is around.

I like the closed captioning, but the others in my family hate them.

When I was teaching, I would run the closed captioning as I learned in a grad course that they are helpful for teaching reading and spelling. (A problem with that is sometimes the closed captioning has misspelled words)

It just became habit for me when I met my GF. English is her second language so she watches everything with subtitles. I usually only for foreign or British TV shows. Now I can't watch without them.

Now I'm trying TV in English w/ Spanish subtitles. It's not going so well.

When watching foreign films, duh. When I'm watching an Italian slasher, I'm not trying to pick up a new language solely off context.

Other than that, rarely. Usually when I'm watching something where there are either strong accents (like, when I watched mob movie Sexy Beast, there was a character or two whom I had trouble understanding due to the nature of their Brit accent, so I found subtitles helpful in consistently understanding them) or the audio mix is questionable and the music/sound seems a bit loud compared to voices.

When the subtitles come on when I’m staying at a hotel or Air BNB….I basically lose my mind until I figure how to turn it off.

I have capable hearing….if I wanted to read I’d grab me a book.

I'm GenX, of course we don't use subtitles! I guess since they weren't a thing when we were growing up with our four channels, we never came to rely on them, in general.

Yes for subtitles for everything except sports. It's a game changer.

Legit question, how do you see the scene as intended if you are reading the whole time?
