8 years. I didn't mean to hijack your thread. But I do think if it comes down to moving I may take some time and just travel around for awhile.

You did not hijack my thread lol. Super interesting story and exactly the kind of thing I was hoping would be discussed when I started the thread. Please continue to contribute.

Guess I'll post my reasoning for this thread. Been at same company for over 5 yrs, multiple promotions, one of the company's first 50 employees (now have 6k), and I've grown rapidly in my career with the company. Recently have a new manager (the guy started late March) who is a total fuck. Can't stand him, think he's an idiot and is super shitty and is making my life miserable. We don't get along, work is now sucks after loving it for many yrs, and the writing is on the wall that one of us won't last here until next March.

My wife has been trying to get me to quit since March when the total shithead was hired. Time for more backstory, last yr in the fall I had to work with this guy on a project. He was the project manager (comes from a consulting background, MBA from a top tier B school, etc....), and he was a complete jerk to work with. Everyone on the project hated him (we had a slack channel devoted to commiserating when we were in meetings with him) as he tried to act like he was the entire teams boss and we weren't meeting his expectations. Fast-forward to Nov 2017, I then reported into the VP of my dept. He was a nice person, but never around and certainly wasn't supporting me, my growth, or the team. He decides that we need a Director in the role, to help with the day to day, get in the weeds, remove barriers, etc.... We interview a bunch of lousy candidates over 2 months and this the PM asshole from the strategy team throws his hat into the ring.

I tell my then current boss, the VP, that I do not want to work with this guy and explain why. He goes ahead and hires him anyway. He tells me that I learn a lot from him, he's well liked in the company, etc... That is when I should have started looking for a job, SIGH. I couldn't let go that I thought we could work it out (he just had a baby afterall, maybe he was an asshole due to lack of sleep, what do I know) and I didn't want to leave a company I loved working at.

Well that was obviously stupid. So I've been fucking miserable in my role, working 60+ hours on the regs trying to make this guy happy and I finally just hit a wall and realized that this isn't worth it. So I put in my notice, leaving my company, Nov 9th last day (I chose that date for stock vesting purposes) with no other job lined up.

I'm going to try and find another job between now and then, but also realistic that I might not be able to find one. Glad to hear some other ppl have been through it and come out on the other side ok.

I quit my job back in 2015 and started taking care of my father that has alzheimer's for two years. While off I went back to school and got my degrees I was wanting to get for awhile. I did not exactly quit working cause I did side work since I do plumbing and hvac/r. I could pretty much pick and choose what I wanted and tried to stay away from small jobs that paid less than say 100 bucks. It was nice cause I got to spend some time with my ailing father and finish up my schooling. Now I have a job that I have always wanted. Work 142 days a year, unless of course I want to put in some overtime. It was hard getting back in the groove of working but once I did everything was fine.

Sorry to hear all that man.

Better start saving and being 'creative' with your finances as I think in your heart of hearts you know where this is leading.

I hear what you're saying but I really don't know. I really think she expects me to move. But I totally expect her to fall on her face trying to live on her tiny over taxed salary

Well, fortunately for you there are a ton of jobs available. Good luck.
