High School Nicknames. What if?

  Recently the Washington Redskins were told they may have to change their nickname. If the name "Redskins" has to go away what then? A glance at the nicknames and logos here in Ohio shows that this would effect between 100-120 Schools. The other schools with native american nicknames and logos such as "Braves", "Chiefs", "Warriors" and others would be affected. Some school with the name "Warriors like Westerville North have a Roman warrior as a mascot. Changing these nicknames would involve student bodies, alumni associations, and school boards as well as the communities they represent. What would the cost be to change mascots? So my question to everyone is WHAT IF?

  I don't think you can really compare the ones you listed to the Redskins. I could see where Redskins would be offensive, the others I can not. I might be a little biased about that though, since my Alma Mater is the Chieftains.

  I understand your point of view. I just do not know where the line would be drawn. I hope that all of the nicknames remain.

  I disagree. Chiefs/Warriors/Braves is okay... I don't even think Indians is that bad. If someone has a problem with those, then why wouldn't they have a problem with Cowboys, Patriots, Vikings, Pirates/Buccaneers/Raiders, Fighting Irish (which is more demeaning/stereotypical than any Native American mascot, IMO), etc.

  I do not think that when they decided on mascots, that they were trying to be demeaning. I think they were saluting the heritage of the area. Somehow this has become a political football (pardon the pun). I know a couple of teams have changed nicknames Miami University for one. I just hope everything stays as is.

  Neither do I. But I can see how some can be perceived as stereotypical...

  LOL. Redskins is pretty offensive, in my opinion. Let's call a team the "Blackies" and see how that goes. I can't think of any other mascot that needs to be changed, though.

  Thad Matta's school nickname is "The Corn Jerkers" ...now that's offensive

  There is a school in California named "the Fighting Arabs" who are going to be changing their name. My point here is that the Washington Redskins nickname may not be allowed to be trademarked and this is coming from our friends in the license bureau. I believe there are more than 10 schools in Ohio with the nickname "Redskins", IF they have to change name then what?
