Ashland 2-1 at Wooster 1-2

    Thoughts?

This should be a good game. The onus is on Wooster to prove they can be a contender in the conference. Wooster has not had success against Ashland for quite some time. Hoping we can improve our pass defense this week, if not it could be a long night. Keep working hard Wooster!

Big game. I agree that Wooster has more to prove. If Wooster keeps up the way they've been playing, they could easily win this game. However, I think Ashland is the favorite.

I'd have to say that Ashland is the hand's on favorite in this one. The Generals need to bring their "A" game and play focused and mistake-free football for all 48 minutes. Go Woo!

The new General in town has the boys playing well....just need to put a full 4 quarters of football together. They do that, and I think they can win.

    Should be a great game!

The Arrows come into conference play this year looking much better than last year on both sides of the ball. Hoping for a good game and picking Ashland by 10.

Well, they have one common opponent: Wadsworth. Wooster beat them, Ashland didn't. Wooster is at home to open conference play. I'm going to say with the offense coming alive last week in Chagrin Falls that Wooster wins this in a shoot out. And I can't fathom Coach Haas (who wears the defensive coordinator moniker) allowing the defense to get torched again.

The Daily Record is waiting with baited breath to publish the "Wooster is back" article...this might be the week they get to do it.
  • CCRolly
Being a Wooster newspaper, I would think that's quite obvious Rider.

Until they win the OCC or make the playoffs...I don't want to see it!
  • OQB
Yeah I think in order to have that headline, Wooster needs to win the OCC and make the playoffs 1-2 times before I would make that the headline.
  • CCRolly
I guess we'll see tomorrow night if playing Wadsworth and Chagrin Falls prepared the kids for OCC play.

    Definately a good non-conference schedule....
  • jaco
I think the headline is more like "Wooster Showing Signs of Improvement," which I think is accurate. Haas was definitely the right hire. Changing an entire culture isn't easy. Scheduling more difficult non-conference games (remember McCreary playing Div. 5 Galion??) and making the kids raise their expectations of themselves is a good first step.

Wooster looks improved. Called it at 10, but 9 is good enough. Certainly great coaching at Ashland also. Run defense has been key. This will do well for us next week.

Not impressed with Wooster after watching them tonight...also talked with a fan and said daily record makes them seem like they have a great offense...they depend on the big play way too much. The stats are very deceiving.

They do rely on big play alot but main problem is turnovers. Every game they have lost they have turned it over at least 3 times. Last night they gave Ashland 5 extra possesions and a bunch of mental mistakes. You cant do this against bad teams and expect to win let alone teams as good as Ashland. If these guys can limit the mistakes they can play with anyone. That being said I have not been overly impressed with the offensive play calls either. Haas has done one thing though he has this group of kids playing hard till the end of games this year unlike before. He has began the long journey of changing some attitudes on this team, and believe me for some of the guys on this team that is a major accomplishment.

Turnovers were the key. Credit to Ashland though, they have another great QB and a good group of receivers. Wooster's pass defense has to improve. I think one of the more successful drives Wooster had late in the game is when they did not depend on the big play. Short passes mixed with run and they moved right down the field. I think the reliance on the big play was more due to the fact that we turned the ball over too many times and were playing catch-up football.

Don't even know where to begin with that performance. Looked like the team who played Garfield.

Secondary is awful, which astonishes me. You have athletes back there who seem to have no ability to cover anyone. Offense can't run the ball at all, which leaves everything upon their sophomore QB. And his performance to date has looked like he's a sophomore. Some good, alot of bad. Some of those INT's were bad..real bad.

Thats what i said before, we are only as good as young QB. The ints' were not all his fault though, the one in first quarter on first drive was very catchable ball. One of the other ones receiver didnt break route at right time. Third one was definitely on him. this is a product of new system and kids not bieng on same page. As far as secondary you are right, said it before we have athletes but we need to find FOOTBALL PLAYERS. No one seems to be learning from mistakes and too much watching the backfield and not enough paying attention to receivers.

It's certainly aggravating, scarface, to see kids who are such good athletes be such substandard football players. By that I mean technique, situational awareness, etc. Ashland's precision was killing them.
  • scarface1
Agreed jaco some of these kids just are not as coachable as some people not in the know think. It is hard to teach technique to kids who think they can beat everyone with just speed. The fastest kid on team got beat on Ashlands last long touchdown do to bad technique. This has to change or it will be long season.
