Salem Quakers 2012 - Johnson takes over for Kopachy
-
TheQWFMJ TV in Youngstown reported tonight that Mike Kopachy might leave Salem for an assistant coaching position in Canfield. No other details were given and phone call inquiries from the station were not returned.
-
ts1227Nothing on their website, though that's not too surprising because their website has always been a pile of crap full of week old news.
If true, I'm surprised he would leave for an assistant coaching job at a D2 school (only a one division jump) unless it is a "coach in waiting" sort of thing. Otherwise the only motivator would have to be a significant teaching salary raise, I would think -
TheQI agree. Maybe he just wants to get back into Mahoning Valley football. I don't think it was a secret that he wasn't pleased with the move to the NBC because of his familiarity with local coaches and Valley football in general. I also thought he would jump to a bigger school as a head coach. But, if he is successful as an assistant at Canfield, it could be a good stepping stone to something bigger.
I also checked the WFMJ website last night to make sure that I wasn't just hearing things, but like you said, their website is seriously crappy. The Morning Journal repeated the WFMJ story this morning. I suppose the Salem News might pick up on this story in a week or so, lol! -
southbender12if he becomes a teacher and coach at Canfield it will be a significant pay increase because Salem is a lower paying school district as are most of the schools in Columbiana County and Canfield is one of the best paying districts in the valley. We can speculate on the motivators that were involved with this move but bottom line is that when he was hired in Salem the powers that be promised him they would stay in the AAC and not jump into the NBC (which was a rumor then). A new superintendent was hired shortly thereafter, who happens to be from the NBC, and he went against the wishes of all of the coaches or at least the coaches that have brains, and moved Salem into a conference where their sport programs will go to die. All coaches want is a chance to compete and Salem no longer is in the best situation to compete in any sport. Boys and Girls Basketball programs are down in a conference that isn't considered a world beater in basketball, the baseball and softball teams stink and football team fought very hard with a large senior class to keep the program at the .500 mark.
You also need to take into account the fact that he has two sons under the age of 5 and being an assistant for the near future takes a lot less time away from his family. -
ts1227Salem pays highest in Columbiana County, I believe, but I would assume Canfield is much higher.
I understood he was frustrated going to the NBC... I would think it's more of the life issues than the football issues if it comes to fruition.
FWIW, boys basketball and baseball will unfortunately suck in any conference you put them in, it's been that way for a while now. Girls is in a down cycle but I doubt they stay there. -
TheQWow. Hope it isn't too serious.

ts1227I'm surprised Mike responded to those morons. I comment on some stuff on there, but it's literally like the 10 dumbest people in town go to the library and just spout off complete nonsense on there anymore, they're really bad. It is good for comic relief.

Good luck to Coach Kopachy in the future. He turned around the Salem Program in a quick hurry.ts1227;1166694 wrote:I'm surprised Mike responded to those morons. Just an FYI -Salem is one of the lowest paid schools in regards to teaching salaries in Columbiana and Mahoning counties.ts1227;1165316 wrote:Salem pays highest in Columbiana County, I believe, but I would assume Canfield is much higher.

I find that surprising (for Columbiana County, I know most of Mahoning pays more) considering only them and Columbiana ever pass a levy around here. I know Salem pays their subs more than anyone in the county by a decent amount.sportsforlife;1179034 wrote:Just an FYI -Salem is one of the lowest paid schools in regards to teaching salaries in Columbiana and Mahoning counties. -

The only lower paid in Columbiana County are Southern and Wellsville (I think that is right - I have the actual but not with me right now) Salem actually lowered their sub pay this past year, too. Very competitive in administrative salaries though. Not sure where they are in regards to coaching salaries but could easily get the numbers on that...ts1227;1179083 wrote:I find that surprising (for Columbiana County, I know most of Mahoning pays more) considering only them and Columbiana ever pass a levy around here. I heard that Salem is holding a teaching job for the coach. What is Johnson's certification? -
QuakerOatsRon Johnson has been hired as the Quakers new coach.

ts1227Yeah, I was a sub when they cut it back. But even the reduced rate beat most if not all county schools

Salem News breaking article on the hire says he's filling a business and career based intervention position that is currently open. -

That is interesting. I only thought that an English job and an Art job were open due to retirements. I didn't know that Salem offered business and career based intervention programs. Will be interesting to see what he is teaching.ts1227;1180970 wrote:Salem News breaking article on the hire says he's filling a business and career based intervention position that is currently open.
Anyways - good luck to the new coach.
Anyone know how he will staff the program. -
TheQGood luck to Coach Johnson and the Quakers!!

Would it be the OWE-type stuff that Jeckavitch used to do (and Brink when he was here)? Or would it be the CBE-type program Schneider taught?sportsforlife;1181137 wrote:That is interesting. OWE is staffed and I don't know about the CBE program - maybe they are bringing it back.ts1227;1181313 wrote:Would it be the OWE-type stuff that Jeckavitch used to do (and Brink when he was here)? Or would it be the CBE-type program Schneider taught?
Looking forward to seeing how the coach forms his staff and how the students respond. Again - good luck to the new coach... -
ts1227
It may be something completely different, but those were the only 2 things that came to my head that meet that description. They claim it was a legit vacancy and not a created position in the article, so who knows.sportsforlife;1181403 wrote:OWE is staffed and I don't know about the CBE program - maybe they are bringing it back.

southbender12wake up and smell the quaker crap on bratten's breath...they absolutely made up some bogus position for Johnson. To be honest I don't care that they did this but at least be honest and avoid the politician answer. This guy will teach a made up class or two and have a bunch of study halls and the word on the street is that they gave him a bunch of years so his salary will be nice and fat. This is all well and good but a few questions come to mind. One is who his staff will consist of...holdovers? Will he be able to convince guys who coached from him in McKinley to come to Salem?? The second question is how many games can he win? This might be a team that struggles a lot and will that justify his salary and job status. I think this is the right football hire but there are still more questions than answers
-
ts1227Any proof on your assertion regarding the teaching position, or is just an assumption because Bratten went with his Stark County ties again and for whatever reason that annoys people?
