They graduated a bunch of studs and now they're plugging in young guys who have known nothing but success but lack experience.

How can RED RUM talk WCAL football if all he ever did was band?

Same way most of us can talk college and pro football or the Olympics without having participated.

Matt Zuercher AKA "Mr. Waynedale." is the top football player to ever play in the WCAL.

    Here is why.

The football records Zuercher holds are most tackles in a game (24), season (162) and career (559). He's also third for the Bears with 2,630 career rushing yards and 44 touchdowns

Zuercher also had a successful four-year career as a fullback for the University of Akron

You sure about that? He may have been ILB....just a thought

Hey anyone in here going to see Northwestern pound puppies get tore up by East Knox in the scrimmage on the 8th?
  • Black Sheep
Zuercher played fullback and Linbacker when he was at Waynedale. The Zips used him as a Fullback.

Zuercher was also a talented basketball player. He's actually the school's all-time leading rebounder and fourth in points (930).circa 2008

So the guy who went on to start at Ohio State for (I think) 3 years, was the Citrus Bowl MVP one year, and played several years for the Miami Dolphins ... where would you rank him?

For what it's worth, I played against Zuercher. Kid was indeed really good.

. I am hearing about some spread in bulldog country as well. Will still have to see to believe. I also heard they are putting Moyer back in the backfield where he belongs and going with the soph Ryder at qb. I am actually liking some of the skill guys for Dalton. Moyer, obviously can do a lot of things well. Clark will be a tough matchup at TE and I like what metzger brings also. You have some toughness with some of the others as well such as McGinty, Raines and others. They have several good linemen, but I am still wondering if it's enough of them. Also a nice article from the independent on Friday night Ohio today. He mentions how the soph and jrs will be key. There are only 3 or 4 guys in he sr. Class that will contribute. A lot of these guys got pt as fresh and sophs so hopefully they can grow from that

Dalton is the kind of team you never sleep on. They've got a great tradition over there, and they always work hard.

O trap.....these young whippersnappers are not going to remember guys like these.....If I remember right, ( i was in jr high, you were probably in diapers, correct me if I am wrong) Kolic was just as good of a running back as he was a linebacker. I think he would have my vote as best all around. I will have to think about it some more , I am sure that there are others who would rank right there with him.

As I recall, that's correct. I think he was in the class of '86, but I might be wrong. If that's the case, I don't think I was in diapers, but I was still very, very young. There's still a picture of him up in the Wilbur Berkey Fieldhouse standing with an OSU cheerleader after that Citrus Bowl, who I believe ALSO went to Smithville in her HS days.

I actually had the pleasure of playing with his nephew who was the same age as I was, and it must be genetic, because that guy was responsible for the hardest hit I ever took in practice.
  • Mr Miyagi
    Kolic was class of '81.
Probably was a better track athlete than football. The guy was very good.
  • Mr Miyagi
Since there is not much football talk and we were asked about past players, let me ask this question. Most of us are ex H.S. players, who is the best player you played against? What memory of playing always takes you back and makes you smile and think "That was the good ol days"

For me. Best player I played against. All Star game in Copley. Percy Snow Canton Mckinley? I know he went on to be a great big 10 linebacker , but I would much rather be tackled by that guy than actually have to tackle him when he was playing full back

Memory. In the huddle, Red Rum said he would buy me a 6 pack if I scored a TD. I did. Later I scored again and Red was there in the end zone and said "12 pack" I scored one last time and there to meet me in the end zone was Red yelling "Keg! Keg! Keg!"

By the way, he never bought me a 6, 12 or keg.
  • O-Trap
Ah, well then that was before I was born. ;)

I think he still holds the shotput record for Smithville. Was apparently one heck of a weight man on the track team. I know Zach Carr set the discus record back around '99 or '00, but I'm pretty sure Kolic still has the shot record.

    Or Hillsdale

I dont know what to think of Hillsdale. With the number of boys they have on the roster, surely they can plug the holes left by seniors? I originally had them tied for the title, but now I am not so sure.

I havn't heard much about Waynedale, which means 1 of 2 things. They are going to be pretty good and they are trying to keep it quiet or they don't want to talk about the team because they don't expect much.

This year could all come down to QB play. How does Norwayne and Hillsdale new QB play as first year varsity QB's? How well does Smithville and NWN's QB play and will they stay healthy?

Regarding best player I played against ...

Hmm ... that's tough. There have been some REALLY good players we went up against. Thad Helber from Amanda-Clearcreek ended up being the D5 offensive POY the year Smithville met A-C in the Regional Championship (2000). Still, I'd have to give it to Jedediah Stephen. Think Adam Wallace passing accuracy, size, and arm strength ... but an even better runner. That Smithie team lived on its defense for a LOT of that season, and that kid STILL put up over 400 offensive yards against Smithville in the Regional Semifinal in 2001.

I don't have numbers on him, but if I recall correctly (and that isn't a surefire thing, admittedly), he had about 2,200 yards passing and over 2,500 yards rushing on the year.

Kid was a freak in all sports, as I recall him scoring 50+ in a basketball game and hitting 4 homers in a baseball game. He ended up playing baseball in college for OSU, and I think he's in the Orioles' farm system now.
