Girard vs Black River
-
ICBMSaturday 7pm Uniontown Lake blue Streak Stadium
Girard (10-1) comes to week 12 after taking down Canton Central Catholic 35-12 in round one. The offense was solid as was the D in that game and Girard spent a good bit of the second half just trying to run the clock. It was pretty much what a 1 vs 8 seed game should have been.
This week will be a tougher test. Black River (9-2), like Girard, has put up a lot of points this season, but has been shelled pretty good a couple times as well. BL has surrendered 239 points (21 a game) while scoring 436 (39) and Girard has conceded 170 points (15) while accumulating 480 (43). Girards worst defensive effort was against Campbell where they gave up 42 while BL has surrendered 55 and 48 points in two losses.
From what I could find, I think BL runs a wing-t offense ammassing about 3400 yds to date on the ground, and can throw pretty well on top of it with QB Kuntz, a junior who is 60 of 135 passing for 1,057 yards and 13 TDs. Their defense is led by all-state D-end John Guilford (6-4-210), but they, also like Girard, have given up some points along the way.
The Pirates, 9-2, come into week 12 after knocking off Manchester for the second time this season, the first 29-28 and last night, 49-24. Their two losses come to playoff teams, Firelands who beat them 55-26 and Wellington how handed them a 48-21 defeat. Both of those teams were destroyed in their first round games, albeit by state title contenders. Firelands lost to Chagrin Falls 66-14 and Wellington lost to Kenton 74-22, as Maty Mauk broke his brothers national career high school yardage record.
Any thoughts on this game? -
Falcons53Indians big in this one. They will get a couple stops on defense and score on their first 5 possessions. It will be over by half time.

1_beastHow are the 2 injured kids from Girard? Two key players....if Im not mistaken...one with a bruised knee/hurt ACL and another with a concussion????? That could be huge in this game!!!
-
Con_AlmaBR has a nice team. The were beaten up by a spread team earlier this year.
They do run the wing-t. They are physical and pretty fundamentally sound. The have a good defensive front with I believe a returning all state d-end. -
THE4RINGZGirard is the odds on favorite to win Region 13. Can't see them slipping up this week.
-
1_beastThe two players that were injured are "key" players!!!! It could factor into the results, coupled with the fact that Black River is playing as well as anyone right now!!!
-
Con_AlmaTheir, Black River, running back is young...I think a sophomore. He's not big but has tremendous feet and good speed.
-
thePITmanGood luck to Black River!

Bloody ToothbrushBlack River seems to destroy the other team or be destroyed. They haven't played alot of close games this year.
I wonder which scenario will play out this week. -

Injuries are part of the game. Girard has been fortunate to this point. Nobody has missed a play. It's not a good time to lose a couple guys on the defensive side of the ball going into games with high scoring offenses. But fear not. The cupboard is not totally bare. There are some other bodies to step in with little drop in skill. There are a few others that are dinged up but I'm sure will play. Hopefully we can make a game of it.1_beast;963458 wrote:The two players that were injured are "key" players!!!! It is going to be a tough week preparing for a seldom seen offense, although Girards final game of each year against Liberty features a WingT offense so it's understood that it's asignment football for the defense.
Anybody have a roster or some size comparisons for Black River. I know most of the backs are fairly averge size with the great sophomore back, but how big is the line that punches the holes in the defense to put up so many points and what do they have for recievers when they put it up?? Girard has a couple good size guys on the Oline but the defense is pretty much a bunch of mity mites playing with heart. It was plenty good enough for the schedule but it's playoff caliber teams now. guess we'll have to just show up and see who wants it more. -

BR doesn't really "air it out" much. Mostly a running attack with 4 different backs plus the QB running.
The Pirates tend to be "hot" or "cold". They've gone "cold" a couple times and got blown out. When they are clicking on all cylinders, they are very good.
Thoughts on the game-
I honestly have no idea what to expect, I wouldn't be surprised if River got spanked. I also wouldn't be that surprised if they won (well, maybe a little). I would have to list the Indians as favorites. I guess we'll find out Saturday.

BR1986FBAs much as it pains me to say it, I'll go with Girard in this one. BR's defense can be a sieve. That being said, GO PIRATES !!!

OhioBrookfield beat a campbell team that girard lost to...... Campbell had 5 turnovers against girard and still won the game, it just goes to show Girard can either play really really good or average.... If they show up they will roll but if not BR can stick around till the end.

Every team has that one off night and Campbell was that game. Girard came into that game flat and Campbell came in ready to play and did just that. The Campbell QB had the game of his life going 18-24 and Girards QB did as well. But his was the worst of his life. Any Girard team goes 3-18 passing is unheard of in recent history. And despite that, Girard held a 28-20 lead late in the 3rd qtr. and ended up losing 42-35. I don't see Girard coming into anymore games unprepared to play at their very best. This team is a fast starter and has put 35 on the board in the first 12 minutes a couple times this season. Thats the team I expect to see tonight. Not necesarilly 35 points but a team who treats every possession like it's a two minute drill and comes at you with everything they have in an effort to score quickly. They will run a play every 20 seconds when they get on a role so buckle up. Black River will likely have to score some points every quarter to win this one. Indications are the Pirates are a bit pourous on defense but can score on anyone. Could be a crowd pleaser and a D co-ordinators nightmare.Ohio;968209 wrote:Brookfield beat a campbell team that girard lost to...... My guess;
Girard 42
Black River 28 -
