Sounds like Madison has some athletes that we will have to match up with......

If Riders cannot win this game , they have no business being in the playoffs.

Well said! Agree 100%...and until we put three consecutive QUALITY wins together..I am still not sure we belong!

One thing we're missing that we had on last year's team..............SWAG.

    Get that swag going.

Where's that air of confidence that Orrville teams have had through the decades?

If you don't believe in yourself then why should anyone else?

It starts and stops with that position, but I agree there are plenty of other components involved in having good offensive output...

My point is that I think it should be better at this point in the season based on the amount of experience that is there in that position!

Our oppenents are stacking the box and forcing us to beat them through the air..If someone would have told me at the beginning of the season that by week 6 or 7 that oppenents would be forcing us to beat them through the air I would have said they are crazy...they are stopping the run and sitting/waiting on the homerun ball...easy enough! Because that is all we have!
I said roughly the same , not improved, the running game is what we are lacking when we only have a one handed running back and no help for him. We can't expect so much from a qb when he has not enough of a running game to share the load and a small line you have to admit is not as good as last season's.
PS I am not related to the qb, just think there is more than his position that is weak. :)

Currently we have rushed for 1,058 yards and 10 TD's through 7 games, the statistics you mentioned of 2,000 yards and 25 TD's were in a 14 games season...... We are on pace to have almost the same rushing output as last season.

    2011 7 games Rushing 1052 yards, 10 td's, 15 fumbles lost, Passing 1273 yard 11 tds 11 ints

    2010 7 games rushing 1246 yards , 17 tds, 9 fumbles lost, Passing 1174 yards 11 tds, 11 ints
    2010 10 games rushing 1774 yards , 23 tds, 11 fumbles lost , Passing 1584 yards 14 tds 12 ints
    2010 14 games rushing 2273 yards , 27 tds, 14 fumbles lost , Passing 2099 yards 19 tds 18 ints

This season we are approx. 200 yds rushing less , 100 yards passing more , rushing tds 7 less, passing tds the same, ints the same and fumbles lost 6 ahead of last year and already more than we had in 14 games last season!
And I am almost certain we had few fumbles inside the 10 yard line last season.

The original point was this years offense is basically the same as last years ,both passing and rushing, and not due to a lack of performance from the qb position which so many are saying. The biggest difference is the amount of fumbles and the amount in the red zone, which means less points for us on the board.

Alright here it goes. IMO Kyles lack of success is a creation of the coaching staff. Most QB's when they start out young are nurtured. They cut their teeth on shorter intermediate routes and dump passes. They often get their confidence from success with shorter passes. Most spread offenses are designed if a tight end or running back is released after everyone runs a longer route, he is open. Young QB's tend to use them a lot and that's alright. It seems to me that we are always going for the long ball. It's like our coaches are telling everyone that we have superior speed so just throw it out there and our WR's will go get it. I think we need to be more patient and try to sustain some nice long drives. Take Kyle back to the basics. I know he's started 20 games now......so what! He needs to get his confidence back. It's obvious they aren't going to make any changes. It all starts with the Quarterback.
  • Dr. KnOiTaLL
Footballnut, I completely agree. I played QB back in my day, and experience and confidence was gained by making reads and hitting the open route, which often times, was a short pass to the flats or a dump to the tight end like you mentioned. Those passes develop touch and accuracy on a small scale. As a QB learns to get through his progressions, many times the deep ball is a third or fourth read. By sending three guys deep as a mainstay in an offense, young quarterbacks are not only lacking the ability to make reads, but they also don't develop good touch and confidence that would be gained through shorter, high-percentage throws. Look at Colt McCoy for example. He does not have incredible arm strength; however, the west coast offense allows him short, quick reads to make plays. Thus far, McCoy has (sadly) carried the Browns on his arm. Hopefully they can right the ship as well and give the ball to that hoss they call a RB :D

QB's also have to have thick skin and be tough minded. I don't see that at Orrville. He is fragil in his mind and has no idea what he is looking for in a Defense. 20 starts and no better then his 1st. Not sure you will "fix that"
  • footballnut
All you can do is put him in the position to succeed. I question whether or not he's the guy too.....we all do. The fact is, he's our guy.

Good Luck tonight Riders. Stay healthy

Nice posts footballnut and knoitall! I have stuck by Kyle ever since he first started because I really believe he can get the job done. We just need to help him succeed.

We need to get back to the basics and start running the pass concepts that are the bases of this offense:

    slant/out
    crossers
    Corner/stop
    Post/In
    all curls
    option route
    fade/out
    Press route

These passing concepts are "mirror" routes that when in a spread formation both sides are running the same patterns. These are basic reads and usually involves reading one defender which is needed for a growing quarterback. Also I think we need to get back to the "hot route" what I mean is teams know how to get in our head..so they bring a lot of pressure, the slot guys replace the blitzing backer and it is an easy pitch and catch for a 5-10 yard gain.

We need to get back to the basics and build off of that...and take what the defense gives you.
  • Old Rider
^^^ Those are all great posts but the common word in each was "read". He has not developed that ability and if he doesn't have it yet...he never will.

Also mentioned was reading the defense and hitting the short routes...look at the film. The short routes are open he just fails to see them and get the ball out of his hand quick enough. Its all confidence in himself now and he needs some in the worst way!!
  • OQB
Their are 2 things that we need to do in order to win:

    1. Hold on to the football

    2. Take what the defense gives you.

    It's so simple! :D

    LET'S GO RIDERS!!!

    Good Luck Red Riders!

Get that swag back and play Rider football for 4 quarters!!! Seniors lead the way. Only 3 regular season games left..make it count!
