Toledo St. John's Jesuit two-sport standout Cheatham Norrils had left many wondering whether he would opt to pursue football or basketball at the collegiate level.

Thursday night, he delivered his answer.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound wide receiver/defensive back gave University of Toledo football coach Tim Beckman a nonbinding verbal commitment to stay home and continue his career with the Rockets.

"At first it was [tough to decide between football and basketball], but not really," said Norrils, who recently resumed his role as the Titans' starting point guard for the fourth straight season -- only the second player to accomplish such a feat under 32nd-year St. John's coach Ed Heintschel. "I've been getting a lot more looks in football, and that's obviously for a reason."

A two-time All-Ohio first-team selection and The Blade's 2010 player of the year, Norrils led the Titans with eight interceptions this season, including three he returned for touchdowns. He also was the City League's leading receiver, finishing the season with 58 catches for 1,061 yards. He scored 14 total touchdowns for the 11-2 Titans.

Norrils received offers from Air Force, Buffalo, Bowling Green, Ohio, and other Mid-American Conference schools.

"Toledo was just the best spot for me," Norrils said. "I felt like the coaches really wanted me there, and I had a good relationship with everybody. Plus I didn't really want to go too far. I'm happy that my family has been behind me all the way and now they can still come watch me play."

Norrils said he was recruited to play defensive back at Toledo, but he could end up playing wide receiver depending on the team's need.

The Rockets have been recruiting Norrils ever since Beckman was hired in December, 2008.

"They've been on me the toughest, and I've developed a relationship with the coaches," Norrils said. "I feel like they're one of the top teams in the MAC. It's a building program, and I want to help Toledo get more on the map."

Norrils is the eighth member of UT's 2011 signing class and the third straight Blade player of the year to commit to the Rockets. Per NCAA rules, Beckman cannot comment on incoming recruits until they sign a national letter of intent. The earliest they are permitted to do so is national signing day in February.
