Week 14: Orrville Red Riders vs Chagrin Falls Tigers

  • OQB
Movement by everyone presnap, making it hard for the tigers to dictate what we are in and who is coming on the blitz. If they are smart, I think they know outside of Turner, Simpson, and Brenner our DB's are very susceptible to getting beat...like EC knew.

I would think they would try to spread us our with a lot of 4-5 WR sets so we have to bring in Infield and Rice to drop back in coverage. They have a TE that is similar to the one EC had, and the kid had a great game (because of the match-up). I would be ready for a lot of screen passes and draws to counter our blitzing, and try to burn us down the middle with that TE.

Coverage, I would stick to man under with Drew over top, and Mason and Matt have the flats. I think if we can get physical with their receivers like we did against EC and make them actually work to get open, it could be another offense we slow down....but if we sit back and have that mindset like Ashland week, they will make us pay.

Coach Haley will have the boys ready, no doubt about that. It is just up to the players executing.

How's that for utter nonsense

What about a walk around defense where no one puts their hand on the ground and just moves pre snap? I saw Northwestern run this in a scrimmage this season and it worked well. I think it creates a moment of doubt in the qb's read at the line.
  • OQB
Yes, that is sort of what I meant by moving around.

Clear Fork did it against Ashland as well, and we saw that worked for them.

It really does confuse the QB, and makes him second guess his presnap decisions.....I know you are a Steelers fan, but the Browns do this as well, and shut down Tom Brady, so yes it can be very effective!
  • OQB
Don't know how well our d-line would get pressure though, we have 2 wrestlers on the line and they use that quickness out of their stance to stay low, and beat the lineman. It could be very interesting though.
  • THE4RINGZ
I saw an undersized Northwestern run that against Wooster in a scrimmage and it worked well. Wooster checked off at the line and ran the ball, which played into Northwesterns strength. I thought it was a great move.

I do like what the scheme was with Pirman against Triway in the first meeting too. ( I won't go into details here for competitive purposes). I think that is his more natural role on defense.
  • OQB
Yes when he has his ears pinned back just waiting to hit the QB and has no other responsibility, that is when he is a force. The defense that Haley runs is built for the MLB's to make the tackles (for obvious reasons). So Pirman doesn't have those division 1 stats that you think he would have. His job is to cave everything in and force them to the middle backers, so when Mason and Matt make tackles, it is because The line, and ends are doing their jobs.
  • THE4RINGZ
And that walk around I mentioned could bring Max up the middle if your OLB's are covering flats or short middle.
  • OQB
I still think our offense is our best defense. If we can keep the opposing team's offense off the field, they can't score. We need to get the running game going early and often. Once we have them on their heels we can run some playaction passes, and just keep running it down their throat.

The play of our QB will once again be very critical, he has improved so much from week 9, and is finally managing the game well. The only thing I can critique is his ability to throw on the run, and having a lot of balls sail on him with crossing routes. If he can rifle some throws in, and deliver accurate passes on the run, we are pretty dangerous.
  • OQB
Absolutely, Idk if you read RR1's latest blog, but it showed a video of Vicars miked up....he said "line up and run it away from 88" 88 being Pirman.....If we were to run that it would really be hard for them to know which side Pirman is coming from.
  • THE4RINGZ
You have an offensive mindset, mine is defensive. I could sit for hours discussing different scenarios. But I need to get some sleep.

    Let's continue this conversation later.
  • OQB
We had a lot of missed opportunities last week on offense, and really relied on our defense too much. Give them credit for getting stronger as the game progressed, but at some point we have to capitalize on the short field, turnovers, and the opposing team's mistakes.
  • OQB
haha I have some defensive mindset....I played OLB when we went to the regional finals against mooney.

I did not take it personally. Just wanted to respond and give my opinion.

Nice article in the Daily Record today.

I think you have to look slant up the middle on us as well. Early in the season you could go down the sidelines on but not now. I was worried about EC because they were good at taking what the defense would give you. CF says they'll do the same thing but I think they when they discover you can't go down the field, they'll also find all the option/swing pass/long hand off passes will result in negative yardage plays.

They think they are going to be able to make adjustments in the locker room and bring some wizardry to confuse our simple-minded kids and figure something out in the 2nd half. They will ultimately find they don't have an answer.

Orrville is the master of its own fate in this game. Do Pirman and Simpson stay healthy? Does Tre hang onto the ball? Will our DB's be able to jam them at the line? Does special teams do their job? Those are the things I'm looking at.

Coach Davault on WTIG 990 right now.

I don't know about you all....but it all seems to come so fast. I have to stop myself and say "hey, we are in the final four!" I know the team is not satisfied and they are right back to work..business as usual Saturday morning after the Genoa game. But....what a ride this team is giving us. and I. probably like a lot of you, really don't think these guys have played there best game offensively. What if we can put that together Friday night? I need to pinch myself to remind me that we are so close to the big prize. All the guys on here that are former players. parents, fans, we are having a ball with all this stuff aren't we? Yeah baby! Could have the makings of the best Thanksgiving ever!

    Go Riders!!!! Beat those Tigers!!!
  • RedRider1

    No...per the AD's office.

    5knots,
Well said. Do we realize how close we are? We said all year how this team had the talent, but could they put it together. I think we're seeing that right now.
Something clicked in this team after the Clear Fork loss. Hope the cold doesn't keep people away. We've had light turnouts (compared to the past) the last 2 weeks.....need the fans Friday.

I think we should only do the police escort thing if we're at the state championship game.

It has been a great ride and every win has seemed like we're beating the odds, but we're improving every week and have the ability to do more than we have already done.

Coach D is a business like usual coach. We'll never charter Coaches again after the loss to OG last year, kids won't practice on the game field during the play offs no matter how bad the practice field is, We won't be taking any after school trips to go practice on turf, He hated all these things he did last year. keep the kids in a schedule and keep doing what got you here! That's Coach Davault in a nutshell. OK with me! What a start to a coaching career he has had.
  • RedRiderPower
I'm very excited about these Riders but that excitement is two fold. Knowing that next years team will be in the hunt once again makes all of this so much more exciting!

This group of Riders has the chemistry (SWAG ) that we've been missing for a couple of years. It's been a pleasure to witness how they have all came together as a team and have worked hard to get to this point...I still don't think we've seen the Best Riders yet though. If our offense can find a rhythm and put points on the board they'll be turning a lot of heads and maybe just maybe then they will start getting the respect that they truly deserve.

Want to wish the Rider Nation a Happy Thanksgiving!

    GO RED RIDERS!
  • RedRider1
Well said RRP, Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Get fat on some 'bird and be thankful for all the blessings in your life.

Then throw on a few extra layers and come out and support the Red/White & black on Friday. Hopefully the poor and underprivileged Red Riders can give the mighty Tigers a game.
  • Old Rider
Nothing better than football practice on Thanksgiving Day!

Seniors need to take advantage of this situation! With two more days of practice and a game on Friday, you only have a handful of days to be with coaches and your teammates! It comes and goes real quick, so remember....this is now and these nows don't last forever, only in memory"

    Make it memorable boys!

Its right there for the taking!

WOW, Awesome posts today Fellas!! I don't even know where to start, but here it goes.
I don't know about you all....but it all seems to come so fast. I have to stop myself and say "hey, we are in the final four!" I know the team is not satisfied and they are right back to work..business as usual Saturday morning after the Genoa game. Absolutely, and I couldn't agree more. I know I have talked to some of my old teammates and we are jealous, but it's a jealous in a good way! haha We all need to take time tomorrow with our families and enjoy this amazing ride we are on with the Red Riders.

The offense just needs to find that consistency....that is the one thing we are lacking, we have really good and really bad phases during the course of a game. If we can eliminate all those inconsistent drives, we could REALLY be dangerous!
What a start to a coaching career he has had.
Doug Davault is 42-17 in his 5th year for Orrville. His playoff record is 7-2 in three appearances. All three appearances have gone to the Regional Finals, and of course we're still in this year!!

Once again, I couldn't agree with you more! Let's not forget though without the great assistant coaches none of this could of happened!

RedRiderPower, nice post and you are absolutely right about next year's team....BUT let's save that for later, we are still playing!! :D

    Old Rider, that was perfect!

Take a look at this video: Sean Payton the New Orleans coach can give a good pregame speach!
