West Holmes @ Orrville..week 6.

  • Old Rider
    Offensive improvement is the goal!
  • OQB
No Turnovers, and a big breakout offensive game is what the Dr. is ordering! Defense, just keep doing what you're doing!
  • THE4RINGZ
    Orrville by a bunch
  • OQB
The JV team is now 5-0 after a 46-6 win over Sr. Pretty surprised they are doing that well to be honest with you. Keep it up boys your time to shine will be here before you know it.
  • BRF
    Offensive execution!
  • ArrowGrad02
Cal Preps: Orrville 44 - West Holmes 12. This is by far the worst I've ever seen the Knights. Orrville picks their own score in this one. Should be a great opportunity for Orrville's sophmore QB to work on his mechanics. Go Red Riders!!

The "Arrogant Orrville fan" in me wonders if we can just starting watching film on Ashland right now?

The realistic Orrville fan says we have plenty to work on this week.

Goals this week should be ZERO turnovers, ZERO penalties & ZERO points against the first string D.
  • THE4RINGZ
West Holmes is a below average team without a few key injuries, add the injuries an they are pretty bad. Orrville should win easily but they still need to show up and play the game.
  • Old Rider
With the way we give the ball away..any team we play always has a chance.

4 turnovers in the last 2 games and all resulted in TD's for our opponents...that has to stop!

Amen I say to that Old Rider. All about focus on offense. Know you assignment, know your reads, execute. All in every play. Sometimes it looks likes there a couple guys out there just going thru the motions? Man....this is High School football. You only get so many of these nights in your life. All in every play!
  • Old Rider
5K...agree 100%. I see it as well. If you are tired, get off the field.

There are only "so many" friday nights in high school football...play every play!
  • 5knots
Good news is we have more than a few who are "all in every play" especially the boys up front.

Anyone else tired of seeing the "go" route as a staple of our passing attack? When's the last time Drew or Stew went over the middle on a slant...or a WR screen or a swing pass to Tre/Mason?

All of those seem pretty high in terms of success rate....plus it gets the ball in the hands of our speedsters in space.

Might be able to throw a few of those this week, but Ashland will sit back and pick those off all night.

Tre has right around 115 carries on the season...for around 525 yards. He's good for 4-7 yards each time he touches the ball...no complaints there...but when he's limping on the 1st series, it really makes me worry about his durability. This seems to have been the case since about week 5 of last season. I really thought he'd be a non-factor after that fumble in the first qtr....but give him credit for taking the ball 30+ times again and doing what's needed when we needed first downs.

The passing attack we are using is different than when I played I think. I too am tired of running the streak route. I know when I played we had a bunch of different combo/Mirror routes:
    Slant/out
    Stop/Corner
    deep in route/out
    Streak/Deep Out
    Fade/deep out
All choice (meaning they run a stop or streak depending on CB alignment)
Flood route, which is roll out passes to the left and right where (Wr runs streak, slot/Te runs deep out, TE/RB runs short out, backside runs post)
and of course the "hot route"

I don't know if we are calling the choice route, but only choosing to run streaks, or if the coaches are calling all these streak routes, but it's safe to say we have probably completed 10% of those streak passes. I had a lot of success with the Hot Route, which is just the slot receivers or tight end replacing the blitzing linebacker. It works everytime, but I don't see it at all anymore, even Joey didn't do it. A lot of people criticized me of "staring down the receiver" but it was because of that hot route, I knew who was coming on the blitz and where I was going with the ball.

I personally think that our offense needs to run first, throw second and be ball control offense having nice long drives eating up the clock. We do not have to score a lot of points to win games especially with the way our defense has been playing, which is OUTSTANDING!!! If I were the OC, I would line up in a Right formation (Wr to the left, TE right, Slot to the right, one Rb, QB under center) have Tre be my feature back and on the field at the critical times, when you need him, and I would have Mason and Matt Davis carry on first or second down and in short yardage situations since they run with more power. This would keep players fresh, and give them breaks because all three play both ways. Then I would just run base dive/counter, stretch plays, and use playaction passes to keep the defense guessing. You establish the run early on, and it will loosen up that defense and then you can spread them out. We need to do a better job at changing up the offense on each drive, by this I mean we need to go from 2 back sets to 4-5 wide sets to make the defense really have to think what are we going to do now. We have become a little predictable lately, and I think that is part of the reason we aren't having that same offensive output we are used to. I still think we need a "Wild Rider" package, just to make teams prepare for it, even if it means we run 1-2 plays a game out of it. Put Turner and Tre in the backfield together and run different plays, last year we had it every play because of Joey's illusiveness and running ablility teams had to constantly worry about him beating you with his legs.

And Finally, set our young QB up to be successful and call simple pass plays where he has 3 options,
ex: Right Gun Mirror 21 (which is the slant/out combo) 1. Slant pass 2.Out pass 3. tuck and run. For this play all he has to do is read one player and it will make it easier on him and teach him how to read defenses. Also running rollout passes will help keep the defense in front of him, and gives him an opportunity to see all the different levels of the routes being run right in front of him.
  • RedRider1
As long as the line can get a seal and protect him on those rollouts....I'm fine with it.

Pop pass to Max, WR screen to Turner, slat to Drew, swing to Tre/Mason.

Mix in the streak once and a while, but it should be option 1.
  • RedRider1
And that sweep to Tre where Mason come in to throw the crackback.....what about instead of the crackback, he takes a reverse? That'd be a neat wrinkle for him or Turner. Keep defenses honest.

    Go Riders!
  • OQB
Exactly last week we could not seal that edge at all and most resulted in sacks or that one pick. We just need a little mix up on the play calling.
  • thePITman
I wouldn't mind a win by West Holmes, here, but I don't see that happening. Haha!

It happened 2 years ago in Orrville. I can assure you that message will be loud and clear this week. We have worked too hard to allow that to happen this year. Focus, Focus, Focus.

I REMEMBER that, too! And in a situation where we were deep in WH territory late in the game, when we should have kept the ball on the ground and ate clock, we aired it out, interception, and then on their offense, WH receiver catches a tipped ball for a huge gain, and we got beat. Yeah, I REMEMBER.
  • 5knots
Sorry BRF for bringing it up...
  • BRF
It's OK. it reminds me of "slowly I turn, step by step"...from the 3 Stooges...but nobody would probably know what I was talking about there (BUT if ya do, give me a shout out!). Ha Ha! ANYHOW, I want to take this opportunity to tell you, 5knots, that YOU have made some great posts in the last week! Not to say that your previous posts were not great, but in the last week you have put the stamp on what it means to be a Red Rider! BRF tip of the hat to ya!
