WEEK 2: Youngstown Boardman (1-0) at Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (1-0)

  • sherm03
Boardman invades YSU's Stambaugh Stadium Friday night to take on their former SVC rivals from the South Side.

Boardman is coming off of a solid win over Wilson (Washington D.C.). From everything that I read, it was a tight game at half before the Spartans opened it up in the second half and cruised to a 34-12 win.

The Cardinals opened up their season on the road defeating Pickerington North 31-14. It was a really solid win, as there were a lot of questions about the Cards with such a young team and the loss of their D-Coordinator in the offseason to YSU.

I wish I could be in town for this one. I love the fact that they have renewed this rivalry.

I'll hold off on my prediction for now. But I think it's going to be a hell of a game at YSU on Friday.

    Go Cards!!!!!

Mooneys offense and Defensive lines will have their way all night Mooney will rack up over 300 yards rushing and boardmen will have less then 200 yards all together and mooney will do the same thing they did last week to another division 1 school :]

    I thought Mooney was a D1 school (sorry, I couldn't resist, LOL!)

    Solid pick!

I'm thinking this will be a low scoring defensive struggle. I see Boardman getting an early TD on a big play...but that will be their last time in the endzone.

I think it'll be 10-7 at the half...with Mooney hanging on to win 17-10.

Let's hope the young Cards are up to the challenge!

I do see boardmen scoring on a big play or 2 but holding mooney to 17 points? highly unlikely when they put up high fortys against north last week

First off...Mooney didn't put up high fortys against Pick North. They put up 31.

Yes, Mooney's offense is tough. Yes, their line is great. But if you know anything about this rivalry, you would know that it's just like the Mooney/Ursuline rivalry. With the exception of a few blowouts, this rivalry produces some low scoring hard fought wins.

    1990: Mooney - 16, Boardman - 17
    1991: Mooney - 0, Boardman - 6
    1992: Mooney - 20, Boardman - 14
    1993: Mooney - 7, Boardman - 0
    1994: Mooney - 14, Boardman - 17
    1995: Mooney - 14, Boardman - 20
    1996: Mooney - 34, Boardman - 6
    1997: Mooney - 13, Boardman - 21
    1998: Mooney - 14, Boardman - 21
    1999: Mooney - 23, Boardman - 15
    2000: Mooney - 15, Boardman - 21
    2001: Mooney - 7, Boardman - 42
    2002: Mooney - 9, Boardman - 10
    2003: Mooney - 14, Boardman - 7
    2009: Mooney - 23, Boardman - 17

So as you can see...Mooney has only scored over 17 points FOUR times against Boardman in the last fifteen meetings. I'm not knocking my team, or saying that they can't do it. I just think that history shows that this game is always relatively low scoring and I don't think this year will be any different.

You act as if they play every year they played last year and it was a fluke how bad the officials tried to give boardmen a chance .... phantom fumble that was called down?

They played every year from 90 to 03(as sherms post states). All very close except for two. Or were those all flukes too. Missed calls happen in football ask UHS fans.

I can kind of see where you are coming from. Boardman and Mooney did not meet up for 5 years, during which Mooney was pretty damn good. Could those games have been lopsided victories? Sure, they could have been. But we will never know for sure.

The bottom line is, even if you look back at all the games going back all the way to 1968, there were only about 12 blowouts. (I defined a "blowout" as a game where the winning team won by 15+ points). So my original point still holds true that more often than not this game is a tough hard fought battle.

Yes I think Boardman can hold Mooney to 17 points. I hope they don't. But I think this will be a closer game than some people think.

    28-6 Cardinal Mooney over Boardman.

With Mooney's starting QB and center out...this was a HUGE win for the young Cards. From what I heard, Courtney Love played a hell of a game after throwing an INT on Mooney's first play. After that he settled down and the Cards really just muscled Boardman around.

I hate to say it, but Ohio was right. Mooney's line was just too much for the Spartans. And Mooney's D completely smothered Boardman except for the short touchdown drive the Spartans had after the INT.

In any case...great work Cards! Time to focus on St. Ed's!

The d was outstanding. Only gave up 103 yards. good work cards lets get ready for St. Eds

The thing I like about this rivalry is Boardman isnt scared of Mooney . Even if outmatched ,they seem not to like each other . Must be an Italian thing. just kidding . Went to the game last year and it was a good one .
Mooney does the same thing every year they just get the biggest kids develope great line play and run right up your keyster. I listened to part of the game last night and it sounds like Mooney didnt miss a beat . 17 starters replaced without a hitch . Another Lou Holtz job done by the media low balling Mooney .
This team should be in the USA 25 everyyear until they are beaten . Not Glenville . With all due respect to that squad because they are a fine team . Ohio this year all together is disrespected in the media this year .

You know you love to say it lol .... But i think with a up and coming fitch team they should get mooney on the schedule they looked dominate against poland last night
