teams recruiting players from other sports?

Does your school allow the football coaches to "recruit" from other sports?

What is your opinion on schools and coaches that allow this?
  • enigmaax
Umm...the kids go to the school? Why wouldn't you want your kids playing multiple sports?

Does your schools administration allow the head football coach to openly recruit athletes from other fall sports?
  • GoChiefs
Yes...our kicker is also the goalie on our soccer team.
  • Con_Alma
    I would also say yes.

The question is are there schools out there that restrict it? I think it's a gentleman's agreement to not "recruit" from another school team but I highly doubt it's restricted. Those coaches usually are on the schools staff together and are peers as teachers.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. A football coach trying to recruit athletes from other fall sports, in particular cross country and soccer. It is impossible for an athlete to be in proper conditioning and rested enough for a 5k cross county race or soccer game if they are attending football practice and games late Friday evening......other then if maybe they are just a kicker/goalie.

Just because of low numbers for the football team, I don't agree with favoritism to the football coach and allowing recruiting tactics from other fall sports just to fill a roster.

Football is a money sport. Soccer and cross country aren't. Bottomline. Not sayin' it's right, but there isn't a school administrator out there that wants to brag about how good their cross country team is.

No doubt about that. It's just too bad I know of one particular school which places top 10 at state in cross country, the football team has made the playoffs like once or twice in 20+ years and THEY CONTINUE to waste their time with football.

Frickin' the school is named for the founder of 4H. Fence in the football field and have horse shows to raise money if that is what it's all about!

Eh, ultimately, it's the kids decision. If he wants to play both, then more power to him.

It's hardly a waste of time. There is a finite period in one's life that you can play competitive football. True team football is like no other sport. If a kid has a desire to play, no matter the level of success of the team, it's opportunities and experiences are worth investing in.

I am a lifelong runner. My daughter is a runner. Our house revolves around running but I would never, ever suggest to my son to run cross-country and not play football because his HS program stinks.

In addition, consider the following; one can compete in games, matches or races 12 months out of the year in wrestling, basketball, track, trail races, road races, volleyball, tennis, etc. A kid can't so that in football. His opportunity is limited to a couple months in the fall for a very short period of his life.

Gotcha. I still don't think there is anything wrong with it. As someone else already stated, ultimately it is up to the kid to decide what he wants to do. I would think any coach with a struggling program (or a program short on numbers) is going to try and get kids to come out for the team, especially if that kid can contribute....and in turn, if that kid can experience the rewards that go along with sports.

In your case, maybe it is highlighted because its football and sometimes there's a perception that football is the favorite (deservedly - its the cash cow). But if a cross country coach tried to recruit a football player, nobody would be mad...they'd just laugh.

My son plays soccer. On his team one boy is also on the football team, half are in the band, 2 run cross country and are in the band. Both of these boys do very well at all three and are honor students. More power to them.
