Week 2 - Newark Catholic @ Nelsonville - York
-
NYFan54First ever meeting between the two schools. Tonight, NC took down Harvest Prep 27-14, and NY defeated rival Trimble 14-6. Dustin Young had 197 yards rushing for the Buckeyes, while (from what I gather) a "Wilder" kid from NC ran for 200+ tonight. Hopefully turns out to be a great game between two great programs.
Go Bucks!!!! -
nc52NC better get a whole lot better this week or they will leave nelsonville as a loser. Only thing going for them this week is that i'm pretty sure NY is not gonna be as fast as HP. If HP had any kind of discipline they would/should have beaten us.
-
GoChiefsGood luck Buckeyes!
-
HeathAlum21How did the Buckeyes look against Trimble? What kind of season do you expect Trimble to have? It sounds like what we have come to expect from NY. As for Newark Catholic, I was disappointed with the 27-14 score over HP. Even though I didn't see the game, I did not hear good things about the Green Wave. I will say NY by a a count of 21-6.
-
newarkcatholicfanI am going with the home team in this one by a single point.
-
NYFan54Unfortunately HeathAlum, I'm 1,700 miles away, and I'm one of the very few Buckeye fans on here. I'd love to give a newspaper worthy rundown of the team, but I have no idea how we looked Friday. I hope the NC fans appreciate the stadium while enjoying an instant classic this week. Prepare for the cannon after every score....it always scares visiting fans
-
NYFan54Now that I've thought about it, I DO have a newspaper worthy story about the game. lol

Another classic
Young helps Buckeyes edge Tomcats

NELSONVILLE — As another classic Trimble- Nelsonville-York football game was unfolding, the Buckeyes’ next big-time running back emerged.
Junior Dustin Young led a Buckeyes’ surge in the fourth quarter, stealing a win away from the Tomcats for the second season in a row. Young finished with 33 carries and 201 yards, as the Buckeyes posted a 14-6 victory at Boston Field.
For fans wondering how the Buckeyes would replace two-time all-state running back Derek Arnold, Young provided an emphatic answer.
“Anytime we graduate a young man like Derek it’s hard to replace him. He was a great kid,” Nelsonville-York head coach Dave Boston Jr. said. “This young man (Young) has waited and it’s his turn now.”
It was ultimately Young’s effort, combined with a stellar defense, that gave the Buckeyes their third win in a row in the series. Young had 11 carries for 62 yards in the fourth quarter alone, a quarter that saw the Buckeyes outscore the Tomcats 14-0.
“He worked hard in the offseason,” Boston said. “He worked on speed, worked on strength. He’s a tremendous kid and he’s going to give us 100 percent just like Derek did and we expect big things from him.”
While Young shined, the Nelsonville-York defense was able to contain Trimble’s all-state senior running back Tyler Dyla, who finished with 11 carries and 39 yards.
The 39 yards was a number that even Boston didn’t see coming.
“He’s a great back,” Boston said. “But we have a very experienced defense back and most of those guys played against him last year and did the same things. We felt we had contain tonight. Our kids did a little better job then even we thought we might tonight.”
The Buckeyes ended the game with a huge statistical advantage, they outgained Trimble 301 to 84 yards, but had to claw out the win late.
Trimble held a 6-0 lead going into the fourth quarter, but could- n’t keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard in the final 12 min-utes. The Buckeyes pieced together two scoring drives that went a combined 47 yards. The first drive started on Trimble’s 21-yard line after the Tomcats were guilty of a 15-yard personal foul after a punt.
It took the Buckeyes six plays from there to tie the game, with Young scoring from seven yards out with 10:29 to play. Young car- ried the ball five times on the scor- ing drive for 18 yards.
Nathan Dean’s extra point was blocked, keeping the Tomcats tied.
The Buckeyes defense got the ball back, and continued to feed the ball to Young. He got four carries in a row before a two-play sequence that went a long way toward decided the game.
With the Buckeyes facing 4th- and-4 at the Trimble 40-yard line, Young got the ball on a pitch out to the left side. The Tomcats defense was there, allowing only a yard and getting the ball back in a tie game with 5:07 to play.
It was Dyla’s turn, and the next play, he took the ball outside left tackle for Trimble. He was met by a Buckeye defender, and tried to reverse field. Only more Buckeye defenders awaited him, forcing him to continue to retreat in the wrong direction.
As the Buckeyes caught him on the 26-yard line, Dyla lost the ball and Nelsonville-York’s Dillon Knippa recovered the fumble. Not only did the Tomcats lose the ball, but they lost 13 yards in field position on the play. The stunning turnaround shifted the momentum squarely in the Buckeyes’ favor with 4:56 to play.
“You get the ball to your best offensive player,” Trimble head coach Phil Faires said. “He’s just trying to make something happen. I’m sure he wishes he had it back but give him credit for trying to make something big happen. You live with it and learn.”
The Buckeyes scored four running plays later on Isaiah Andrews’ 1-yard plunge. Dean hit Young in the back of the end zone for a two-point conversion, and the Buckeyes led 14-6 with 3:03 left.
“Gave them the ball in real good field position,” Faires said. “Got them fired up a little bit. They took advantage of it. Our defense was on the field for a long time. That makes a big difference.”
The Tomcats didn’t get a first down on their ensuing drive, electing to punt on 4th-and-11 from their own 11-yard line with 1:35 left with two timeouts left.
Young iced the game from there with 32 yards rushing on two plays, allowing the Buckeyes to take a knee.
“We put it all together there at the end of the ball game and didn’t want to lose,” Boston said.
It was a bitter pill for the Tomcats to swallow. A season ago, they lost a 7-6 game that saw Nelsonville-York score with just over a minute to play. Friday, they managed to take a lead into the fourth quarter but couldn’t close the win.
Faires said Trimble will learn from the loss and move on.
“We’re going to watch the film and as soon as we pull it out of the player, we’re going to forget about it,” he said. “We tried to tell them the last time we lost in Nelsonville we went 8-2 and beat Caldwell in the playoffs. Not once did we think about the Nelsonville loss at that time.”
The Tomcats dodged bullets for the entire first three quarters, recovering two fumbles to end Nelsonville-York drives.
Trimble’s scoring drive was a 13- play drive in the third quarter that concluded with Charles Kish finding Austin North in the end zone for a 12-yard score.
In the end, it was another comeback win to start the season for the Buckeyes over Trimble.
“It always feels good when you get that first win,” Boston said. “It being Trimble, right over the hill from us, these young men know each other. They fight hard on this night then they talk for a lifetime. It’s a great rival. It’s a fierce rival. You probably won’t find a rival football game that’s anymore physical than this one right here.” -
HeathAlum21The good 'ole Athens Messenger. I think I will make the short trek up 33 to see this one.
-
NYFan54Wish I could be there firsthand this season....No games for me until 2014

OhioStatePride2003I was at the N-Y/Trimble game on Friday. There were a few "first game jitters" as to be expected. A lot of the talk around Nelsonville, was if they'd be able to replace Derek Arnold at tailback. I'd say that question was answered when Dustin Young ran for close to 200 yards. If Nelsonville works on their passing game, this will be a very balanced team. Our O-Line did an outstanding job of opening up holes for Nelsonville's backs. Young isn't the only one Newark Catholic has to worry about, Justin Cunningham went for near 80 yards. As a team, on offense anyway, there's still work to be done - but they can more than hold their own in the run game.
What stood out to me, more than Young at tailback, was Nelsonville's defense. They swarm to the ball, and gang tackle with the best of 'em. A lot is being said about Harvest Prep's speed, but there is - in my opinion - a lot of overall speed on defense for Nelsonville-York. They held Trimble's back (who if I'm not mistake, ran for close to 2,000 yards? Not 100% on that one) to just 38 yards, and held Trimble's offense to around 100 total yards.
Like I said, if Nelsonville can work out their passing game, this team is going to be really good. The schedule this year is a little bit tougher than most years, but if they can beat Newark Catholic, Bishop Ready, and St. Clairsville, this team could make some noise in the playoffs. Should be a really good game Friday night at Boston Field. And you're not the only Buckeye fan NYFan -
NYFan54Thought I was a loner in here. Nice to know that I'm not!! Your description of the game is one I've heard over and over. Seems like we've got quite the bracket buster this year
-
nc52nc just needs to tackle better. wilder is a stud and the o line did pretty good. wilder ran for 209 w/ 4 td's. vernau needs to get the passing game going or it will be a long season for the greenies. i think nc will pull this one out but i'm biased
-
xnds1fannc52 NC could use around 15 more kids with his attitude. If they did they wouldn't lose many games. He's not big but he plays big.
-
nc52yes indeed. conner shook is almost there, and hopefully vernau got rid of his first start jitters
-
YepNC52, the Advocate article said Vernau was 5/7 for 116 yds in his first start. Sounds like he was fine for his first start. Over 19 yards per attempt works for most people.
-
newarkcatholicfanI think the passing game had two more picks.
-
nc52^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
what he said. vernau had 1 and when vernau was out walenburg had the other one on the 2 yrd line. vernau throws the ball like its a shot put. most of those were 3 yard passes that went for a distance. 0 td's 2 ints. has to be better -
NYFan54I hope this one turns out as advertised. I'd give anything to come watch this game

Green Wave set to crash into Boston Field

Coming off a win over its closest rival, Nelsonville-York takes on perhaps the most well-known program in the entire state — certainly when it comes to small-school football — tonight.
Instead of a backyard brawl, tonight the Buckeyes play in a glamour match-up. Nelsonville-York takes on Newark Catholic, at Boston Field in Nelsonville, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Yes, that Newark Catholic. The same Green Wave that is famous across Ohio for its 30 playoff appearances and eight state titles — second-most in Ohio High School Athletic Association history.
The Buckeyes won’t be awed, said head coach Dave Boston Jr. Nelsonville-York has assumed the mantle as the best football program in the entirety of the Tri-Valley Conference and is eager to show what it can do.
“We view ourselves as a very comparable program,” Boston said. “Now they have a tradition that doesn’t take a backseat to anybody. But we’ve been able to build a lot of tradition ourselves.
“There is an expectation for how things should be done and what we want to accomplish every season.”
Expect the Buckeyes (1-0) and Newark Catholic (1-0) to go about things in the same way — with defense and a penchant for running the football.
Nelsonville-York showed off its next tailback in a season-opening win over Trimble as Dustin Young passed the 200-yard mark. The Green Waves showcased their next feature back last Friday in a 27-14 win over Harvest Prep. Britt Wilder racked up 209 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries in the victory for the Green Wave.
Newark Catholic, with five senior starters on the offensive line, will be tough to budge on the line of scrimmage. So will the Buckeyes. Something has to give.
“They’ve always been a run-first team, and then throw it if you have to,” Boston said. “We’re a lot alike in that way.
“We have a similar style. It’s going to be a heck of a game in the trenches.”
Win or lose, it’s a milestone game for the Buckeyes. They’ll get an idea of just how good they may be this season, and have a shot to pin a loss on one of the most storied program’s in the state.
“It’s great to be in these types of big games with well-known programs,” Boston said. “They’re all important games, but there’s a little extra when you get a game like this.” -

"A unique non-conference battle is set for Friday night in Buchtel, as the Green Wave of Newark Catholic make a rare visit to Boston Field. Both clubs come in with week one victories, and both teams showed a tendency to pound it on the ground.
** * **Newark Catholic, led by ninth year coach Bill Franks (71-30 overall)*won the D VI title in 2007 out of the Ohio Division of the Mid-State League.* But consecutive 6-4 campaigns means NC is getting back to the basics.* That was the case last Friday as the Green Wave pounded Harvest Prep to a 20-0 halftime lead, and cruised from there with a 27-14 victory.* Britt Wilder, who rushed for nine scores last fall, went, well, wild in week one.* He had four rushing touchdowns on the*night, and toted the rock thirty times behind his five senior offensive linemen for 209 yards.
But the Buckeyes of Nelsonville-York know all about running the football.* In his first game as starter for Gridiron Glory Player of the Year Finalist Derrick Arnold, junior Dustin Young went past two bills as well with 33 carries and 201 yards as Nelsonville-York scored 14 unanswered points in the final frame to top Trimble.* Young had 11 carries for 62 yards in the fourth quarter.* Senior fullback Justin Cunningham added some yards in the backfield, and speedster Isaiah Andrews notched the game-winning score on a one-yard run in the fourth.
** * **Week two's contest will feature a pair of junior quarterbacks battling it out through the air.* Newark Catholic has replaced two-year starter Kevin Cox (1,700 yards, 19 TDs in '09) with Garrett Vernau, who looked good in the win over Harvest Prep.* Vernau completed five of seven passes for 116 yards, with each completion going for a first down.* Buckeyes gunslinger Nathan Dean gave the pigskin to his tailbacks most of week one, and he's leg in the kicking game will be crucial this Friday.
** * **Nelsonville-York shut down one of the state's best running backs in Trimble senior Tyler Dyla (11 carries, 39 yards) last week, but they'll have to be ever stronger in week two against Wilder and company.* After an emotional 14-6 win over the Tomcats, Dave Boston's (53-18, 8th year) crew cannot afford a let down or look ahead to week three's contest at Berne Union.
** * **Will the Green Wave prove it looks more like the state championship team of '07, or will Young help bulldoze the Buckeyes past its central Ohio foe?* We'll find out on Friday night."
Last one....Go Bucks!!!!! -
gamauterI think the passing game may be the difference and with that I would say NC has the advantage!
-
NYFan54Forgive me for not knowing exact details, as I'm in Texas 1,700 miles away. Nelsonville-York kicked a 33 yard field goal to end the first.
