Campbell Memorial 2010

From what I have read and heard, the Red Devils are going to have a solid team this season. I am excited to see the offense with all of those weapons and speed. I am curious to see the defense and specialty teams, areas which the Red Devils need to improve on. What are the numbers like this year?
  • oldschoolreddev
    Dean,

I too have heard very positive things about the Red Devils this year. Last year we did what we had to do against team that were not as good. However, against the teams that were better, we got killed. Poor tackling, turnovers and not being physical are the things that stick out in my mind that need to be corrected. If these things can be corrected, then look out.

The schedule is definitely upgraded with the addition of Mineral Ridge and South Range. Although I would have loved to see Lakeview and JFK on the schedule, getting rid of Toronto was a good idea.

On a side note, it is good to see Tom Carney back on the sidelines this year. Is he gonna coach special teams again? Last time he coached Campbell went undefeated in 1999. It could be a good omen or it could be a guy jumping on the bandwagon when things are good again. See you all at Springfield Local at 10:00 on Saturday.

Size isn't always everything soup. But if the big boys up front can move their feet and get off the ball, then it's a big plus. Experience also helps. So does senior leadership.
A very successful former head coach at Campbell always said "you're only as good as your seniors."

I don't think he's doing much with the varsity, he's the 7th & 8th grade coach now. He may help out, but he's not a member of the varsity staff.

This could very well be a magical season (ego's need to stay in check fellas).
  • oldschoolreddev
Its the defense that worries me. In Campbell's 3 regular season losses, we gave up 100 PTS! In our 7 wins, we gave up a total of 34 points. With the offense being better, this will create some opportunities for our defense to pin our ears back and get after some of these teams. Girard, Salem, South Range, Newton Falls will be no slouch this year. Hell, I even heard tha Mineral Ridge is the favorite to win their league this year, so we will have our work cut out for us.

Sonny you are right, the ego's need to be kept in check. This team needs to establish its own identity, not trying to compare itself with teams from the past. Quite frankly, I am tired of hearing the comparison of this years seniors with the seniors of 1989. This crop of seniors are comparing themselves to the 1989 team because as juniors they lost in the first round of the playoffs like the 1988 team and came back and made it to the state finals in 1989. I hope that this is true, but create your own identity. Those guys are long gone! And Mooney isn't Chagrin Falls!

Good luck this season. I hope to get to some games this year.

I was fortunate to watch the bottom three on the list play football at Campbell. Each is well deserved of the honor.

I'm curious to where you heard this. I'm with the kids nearly every day and never once have even heard the 89 team mentioned, let alone compared to.

It's just not fair to make comparisons, if indeed they are being made. This Campbell team does have some high expectations because of the weapons they supposedly have on offense. But the worst thing we can do is to get ahead of ourselves. The schedule is tougher than it has been, starting with three quality opponents in the first three weeks of the season. Prior to the start of the regular season, there are two contact scrimmages against quality opponents, Springfield Local and Youngstown East. The East scrimmage always was good for the Red Devil teams from years ago, including the 1989 team. I remember those matchups as being hard hitting and intense. I for one am glad to see two quality opponents for the scrimmages. They should get this team ready. Let's take things one week, one game at a time. The 1989 team had a defense that would flat out knock your head off. They were very aggressive, intimidating, and swarmed to the ball. In fact, that defense gave up just 62 points in the regular season, including four shutouts in a row. I want to see the 2010 Red Devils knock some heads off on defense and shut offenses down. If that happens, this could be a very good year. I am looking forward to Saturday's scrimmage at Springfield.

when you llive in a town like campbell its very hard not to look back to the good ole days and hope once again that magic can be restored for a season...i know alot of the kids want the city to follow them and be excited like back in the day. so i think maybe thats what they are trying to play on. in 99 i know alot of the kids hoped for one of those magical seasons, and the stadium was packed all year long. so i hope in that regard the city is excited as we are and im sure the boys will do the best they can to give us a great season

    Lets go devils,

I have heard it from a coach and a player.

I am trying to state that this team needs to focus and not make comparisons like the '94 team did. The schedule is no cakewalk. Ridge will give us everything they got along with SR, Salem, Girard, NF, Liberty and especially Struthers. If the focus isn't there, we will be a laughing stock like that '94 team.

    Good Luck Red Devils!

You know there is nothing more annoying then typing a three paragraph post and then watching it disappear. Good Luck this Year Devils.....make your own statement in Red Devil football history.

Campbell looked so-so in the Springfield scrimmage. Although Springfield did not score, I felt the Campbell defense missed too many tackles. Offensively, the blocking needs to improve and the receivers dropped some passes. Jales Hughes had a 75 yard touchdown run for Campbell, while his brother Lester had a couple of probable breakaway runs that were stopped by the officials whistles before he could get further up the field. My guess is the officials are trying to protect the QBS in these scrimmages. Campbell's jayvees scored twice on big plays. Campbell has some very good size up front on both sides of the ball and some depth especially at the skill positions. But I did not see the aggressiveness I was looking for. If oldschool was there, I am sure he saw some things that I missed. It will be interesting to read what he has to say. I never have put much stock into scrimmages. But I am hoping to see some improvement on both sides of the ball vs. Youngstown East on Thursday morning.

Bigdean I was there but had the munchkin with me so I stood on the track on the far endzone. Therefore it was hard to really get a good look at everything. From what I did see, the Jales Hughes TD was a very nice run. The RB's look solid in my opinion. That being said, for as much talent as we have in the passing game, they have alot to work on if I am judging them on their first scrimmage. They have to catch the ball better, throw the ball better, block better, and the list goes on. I am looking at it like simply getting the rust out. Alot of talent out there....just getting the rust out....I hope.

Defense....sorry, I am not seeing what I would call aggressive defensive play. The second team played better for that matter.

Thanks for the wrap up fellas, I too will be waiting for oldschools analysis.
